CHAPTER 17 I had just finished watering the rose plants on the bedroom balcony. Our bedroom balcony. I didn’t know why I said our—it was really Salvatore’s room, and I was just staying there—but somehow it felt more natural to call it ours. I never realized Salvatore liked roses; it felt strange, yet I couldn’t help but smile watching them bloom so beautifully. Though I liked this place, I wanted to explore the city. But after that first encounter outside, I was a little afraid to go beyond the house walls. I washed my hands, dried them with a towel, and headed downstairs. Salvatore had already left early this morning, before I woke up. The sweet smell of pancakes made my stomach growl, and I rubbed my belly.
