CHAPTER 20 Beep. Beep. When I opened my eyes, I realized I was lying on a hospital bed. My head pounded fiercely and a cold numbness crept through my body. Stephen was sitting on the couch, reading a newspaper. “Stephen—” I coughed, my throat as dry as the Sahara. “Natalia, you’re awake.” He said, surprised. He folded the newspaper and came over, concern written all over his face. I managed to sit up, resting my back against the pillow. “How are you feeling now?” He took both my hands gently. “Cold... and with a disgusting headache.” I gave a dry chuckle. “That’s from the fever. You’ll be okay. Don’t worry.” He squeezed my hands and sighed. “I’m sorry, Natalia.” He whispered. “Why?” I frowned. “Because I wasn’t there. I would’ve never let that happen to you.” He exhaled deeply
