Chapter 1: Graduation and Goodbyes
The sound of applause echoed through the large auditorium as graduates tossed their caps into the air, marking the end of an era. The crowd buzzed with excitement, their faces a mix of joy, relief, and sadness. Among the sea of jubilant students, Anabel and Lisa stood side by side, their faces glowing with excitement and a hint of sadness. The past three years had flown by in what seemed like a blur, filled with late-night study sessions, shared laughter, and countless memories. Now, as they stood on the precipice of a new chapter in their lives, the thought of parting ways was almost unbearable. "I can’t believe this is it," Anabel said, clutching her graduation cap tightly in her hands, her voice tinged with disbelief. "No more late-night study sessions, no more coffee runs before exams, no more racing to finish papers at the last minute." She looked around the bustling auditorium, her eyes scanning the sea of familiar faces. "It feels surreal." Lisa, standing beside her, laughed softly, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. She wiped at her cheek with the back of her hand. "And no more stealing fries off my plate when you think I’m not looking," she teased, nudging Anabel gently with her elbow. Anabel smirked, trying to lighten the mood, but the lump in her throat made it difficult. "Well, I can't promise I won't do that in the future, but I’ll try to keep my food thievery to a minimum." She sighed, her gaze drifting to the crowd of students celebrating around them. "It just feels like we’ve been through so much together, and now... it's all ending." Lisa nodded, her expression softening. "I know. It’s hard to imagine not having you around every day." She paused for a moment, her fingers nervously fiddling with the edge of her gown. "Germany is so far away," she whispered, her voice tinged with uncertainty. "Promise me you won’t forget me." Anabel turned to face her, taking her friend's hands in hers, squeezing them tightly. "Never," she said firmly, her voice filled with conviction. "We’ve been through everything together. No distance is going to change that. We’ll video call every week, and I’ll tell you all about my uncle’s business and the weird German food I’ll have to eat." Lisa chuckled, though her heart felt heavy. "And I’ll tell you about the chaos of running my dad’s company. I’m sure it’ll be a disaster." She wiped her eyes, trying to hide the tears that were threatening to fall. The two friends laughed together, the sound echoing through the noise of the graduation celebrations. Their laughter masked the sadness that was slowly creeping in, the inevitable reality of their separation becoming more and more real with each passing second. Anabel pulled Lisa into a tight hug, holding on to her for just a moment longer than usual, as if trying to etch this final moment into her memory. "You’ll do great, Lisa," Anabel said softly, her voice full of reassurance. "You’re going to be amazing at running your dad’s company, even if it’s a disaster at first." Lisa squeezed her tightly, nodding against her shoulder. "I’ll miss you so much," she whispered. "I’ll miss you too," Anabel whispered back, her voice barely audible. "But this isn’t goodbye. This is just the beginning of something new. We’ll make it work." They pulled away, eyes brimming with emotion. The moment felt both too short and too long, as if time had slowed down, unwilling to let go of the bond they shared. Anabel could already feel the weight of the distance that would soon separate them, but she knew that their friendship was strong enough to withstand it. With one final, lingering look, they exchanged one last hug before heading in opposite directions, their hearts heavy but full of hope for the future. The bond of their friendship remained unbroken, even though it was now stretched by distance. And though the next chapter of their lives was about to begin, they knew that no matter where life took them, they would always have each other. As Anabel walked away, her heart was full of mixed emotions—sadness, excitement, and anticipation. She could still feel the warmth of Lisa's hug, the promise of their friendship echoing in her mind. No matter how far apart they were, she knew that their bond would endure. And as the applause continued to ring out in the background, she took one last look at the campus that had been their home for the past three years, a place filled with memories that would stay with her forever.
