As Tessa peacefully slept in the bedroom, ready for a restful night, I prepared to join her. Just as I was about to slip under the covers, my phone suddenly rang, breaking the tranquility of the moment. Glancing at the screen, I saw that it was "second" calling, the name I had saved for Cynthia's number.
Curiosity piqued, I quietly made my way to the back of the house, answering the call in a hushed tone. "Hello," I whispered, "why are you calling so late?"
Cynthia's voice came through the line, tinged with boredom and loneliness. "I'm kind of bored and lonely," she admitted.
