I clamped my hand over my mouth to keep from making a sound, and listened even more carefully. I tried to focus on breathing slowly, willing my heart to stop racing.
As the men's voices continued to echo in the bathroom, their conversation took a disturbing turn. "You don't think Robert would do something like that, do you?" one of them said. "Of course he would," another replied. "He's not as innocent as he seems. He's got a dark side, you know." I felt a surge of disbelief and anger. I had known Robert for years, and I couldn't imagine him doing anything like what they were implying. My head was spinning, and I felt dizzy with confusion.
