CHAPTER 3

Chapter 3 – Lunarcrest Academy The first rule of Lunarcrest Academy was simple. Never forget who you are standing beside. It was not written in the student handbook. It was not carved into the ancient stone walls. No teacher stood at the entrance to remind new students about it. Everyone simply knew. At Lunarcrest Academy, a single mistake could turn an ordinary school day into a disaster. The academy stood between two kingdoms, surrounded by mountains, forests and a lake that reflected the silver glow of the moon every night. From the outside, it looked like a peaceful palace hidden away from the rest of the world. Its towering black gates were covered in ancient symbols, its buildings were made from white stone and dark marble, and its gardens were carefully designed with flowers that only bloomed beneath moonlight. It was beautiful. Almost too beautiful. Because everyone who entered those gates knew the truth. Lunarcrest was not just a school. It was where the strongest young vampires and werewolves were sent to learn, train and prepare for the future. Future Alphas walked these halls. Future Vampire Lords studied in these classrooms. The children of the oldest families competed against one another every day. And every year, the academy welcomed a new group of students who believed they were special. Most of them were wrong. The first morning of the new term began with chaos. The courtyard was filled with hundreds of students arriving at the same time. Black carriages and expensive vehicles lined the entrance while servants carried luggage toward the dormitories. Students greeted old friends, parents gave last-minute advice, and younger students stared at the massive academy buildings with nervous expressions. Some looked excited. Others looked terrified. A group of first-year students stood near the entrance, staring at the academy gates. "Is it always this crowded?" A tall boy beside them laughed. "This is nothing." The younger students looked at him. "You should have seen the first day last year." "What happened?" He smiled. "A vampire and a werewolf started a fight before breakfast." The students immediately looked nervous. "Did someone get hurt?" "No." They relaxed. "Because the teachers stopped them?" The boy shook his head. "Because they were too busy arguing about who started it." A few students laughed. That was Lunarcrest. The fights were serious. The arguments were endless. And somehow, everyone survived. Near the eastern entrance, the vampires arrived. They moved differently from everyone else. They were quieter. More controlled. Their uniforms were always perfect, their posture always confident and their expressions carefully hidden. Many students stepped aside as they walked past, not because they were ordered to, but because vampire nobility carried a reputation that had existed for centuries. Among them was the Ravencroft family. One of the oldest vampire houses in existence. Cassian Ravencroft walked through the gates without paying attention to the whispers around him. He had grown used to them. "The Ravencroft heir." "The strongest vampire student." "The one who might become the next Vampire Lord." The rumours followed him everywhere. Behind him walked his younger brothers, Lucien and Evander. Unlike Cassian, the twins had no interest in looking serious. Lucien looked around the courtyard with a smile. "Nothing changed." Evander glanced at him. "You mean the academy?" "No." Lucien looked toward a group of students arguing near the fountain. "The chaos." Evander sighed. "You missed it." "Of course I did." "You are the reason most of it happens." Lucien smiled. "That's not my fault." "It usually is." A few students nearby laughed quietly. The Ravencroft twins were known for many things. Their talent. Their family name. Their ability to cause trouble wherever they went. Cassian ignored them both. His attention was on the academy ahead. Something about this year felt different. He didn't know why. He only knew that the moment he stepped through the gates, he felt as though something was waiting for him. On the opposite side of the courtyard, the werewolves arrived. And the atmosphere changed. Unlike the vampires, werewolves were louder. They greeted each other with laughter, playful fights and challenges before they even reached the main building. They carried themselves with confidence, always ready to prove their strength. At the centre of them was Kaelan Ashbourne. The future Alpha. Everyone knew his name. Not because he demanded attention. Because he earned it. Kaelan was the heir of one of the strongest werewolf packs in the world. From a young age, he had been trained to lead. He was skilled in combat, respected by his pack and feared by those who underestimated him. But unlike many heirs, he didn't act like he was above everyone. He simply walked through the academy like someone who knew exactly who he was. "You're late." Kaelan looked at Rowan Whitlock, who was leaning against a stone pillar. "I arrived before the bell." "That is still late for you." Kaelan raised an eyebrow. "Are you keeping track?" "Someone has to." Rowan smiled. "Being future Alpha doesn't mean you can ignore time." Kaelan shook his head. "You talk too much." "And you don't talk enough." Before Kaelan could answer, a loud sound came from the centre of the courtyard. Everyone turned. Two students were standing face to face. A vampire. And a werewolf. Already arguing. On the first day. Before classes had even started. Students immediately gathered around them. Some wanted to stop it. Others wanted to watch. Because at Lunarcrest Academy, everyone knew one thing. A peaceful day was never guaranteed. The vampire student stepped closer. "You should remember where you are." The werewolf laughed. "I know exactly where I am." He looked around the academy. "Lunarcrest." Then he looked back at the vampire. "Not your kingdom." The crowd went silent. The tension in the courtyard changed instantly. Because everyone knew that sentence was dangerous. The academy had rules. The Moon Accord had rules. But pride had always been stronger than rules. Teachers began moving toward the students. But before they reached them... A voice cut through the crowd. "Enough." Everyone turned. Kaelan Ashbourne stood at the edge of the gathering. At the same moment, Cassian Ravencroft stepped forward from the opposite side. Two heirs. Two future leaders. Two people who represented everything Lunarcrest had been built to control. The entire courtyard became silent. Because everyone knew... The first day of the new school year had already begun with a challenge. The entire courtyard fell silent. It was the kind of silence that only happened when everyone knew something important was about to happen. Kaelan Ashbourne stood between the two students, his expression calm but serious. He did not need to raise his voice. The respect people had for him was enough to make the crowd listen. "Is this how you want to begin the year?" Neither student answered. The vampire looked away first. The werewolf clenched his jaw but stepped back. Everyone knew why. It was not because they suddenly respected each other. It was because they respected the person standing in front of them. Kaelan was not yet an Alpha, but everyone could already see the leader he would become. Across the courtyard, Cassian Ravencroft watched quietly. Unlike Kaelan, he did not step in to stop the argument. He simply observed. Some students thought it was because he did not care. Others believed he was waiting to see how far the situation would go. That was the difference between them. Kaelan controlled a room by bringing people together. Cassian controlled a room by making people aware of him. Both were powerful. Both were dangerous. And both were next in line to lead their people. A sharp bell suddenly rang through the academy grounds. The sound echoed between the towers, immediately breaking the tension. Students quickly began moving toward the main hall. The first day ceremony was about to begin. Lunarcrest Academy had many traditions, but none were more important than the opening ceremony. Every student attended. Every year, the headmaster reminded them why the academy existed. Not as a punishment. Not as a prison. But as a chance to create a future different from the past. The main hall was large enough to hold thousands of students. Crystal lights floated above them, glowing softly beneath the ancient ceiling. At the centre of the room stood a massive silver symbol of the moon, carved into the floor centuries ago when the academy was created. The symbol was older than most kingdoms. Some believed it carried a piece of the Moon Goddess's power. Others believed it was simply a reminder. Either way, no one ever touched it. As students entered, they naturally separated. Vampires moved toward one side. Werewolves moved toward the other. Even after centuries, old habits were difficult to erase. At the front of the hall stood Headmaster Alistair Valecrest. Unlike most leaders, he was neither vampire nor werewolf. He was one of the few people in history who had dedicated his life to keeping the peace between both races. His silver hair and calm expression made him appear older than anyone could guess, but his eyes carried a sharpness that showed he missed nothing. "Welcome back to Lunarcrest Academy." His voice travelled through the hall. "Some of you are returning. Some of you are entering these halls for the first time. But all of you share one thing." The room became quiet. "You are here because your future matters." He looked across the students. "Many of you were raised with stories about the other side. Some of those stories are true. Some are not." A few students shifted uncomfortably. "But remember this. Lunarcrest was not created because vampires and werewolves suddenly became friends." His expression became serious. "It was created because our ancestors discovered what happens when hatred is allowed to control the world." The hall remained silent. "The Moon Goddess gave us a warning. We have spent centuries trying to prove we are worthy of keeping the peace." His eyes moved toward the silver symbol on the floor. "Do not be the generation that fails." For a moment, the academy was completely still. Then the ceremony ended. And the chaos returned. The moment students left the hall, conversations exploded. "Who was that werewolf who challenged the vampire?" "I heard he comes from a powerful pack." "I heard the Ravencrofts almost fought the Ashbournes years ago." "Is that true?" "No one knows." Rumours moved faster than any official announcement. That was another tradition at Lunarcrest. Secrets never stayed hidden. Near the vampire dormitories, Elaria Ravencroft walked through the corridors with Lyra beside her. The vampire wing was elegant and quiet compared to the rest of the academy. Dark marble floors reflected the golden lights hanging from the ceiling. Ancient paintings of vampire ancestors lined the walls, watching every student who passed. "You know everyone was staring at you during the ceremony," Lyra said. Elaria looked confused. "Why?" "Because you're a Ravencroft." "I've always been a Ravencroft." "Exactly." Elaria smiled slightly. She was used to attention. Being born into one of the oldest vampire families meant people always had expectations. They expected perfection. Grace. Power. Control. What they did not know was that Elaria spent every day hiding a secret that could destroy everything her family had built. She still remembered the first time she felt it. The strange pull. The impossible connection. The moment she looked into the eyes of the future Alpha. She had spent months convincing herself it meant nothing. But deep down, she knew the truth. The Moon Goddess had tied her fate to a werewolf. And if anyone discovered it... Her family would not see her as their daughter. They would see her as a betrayal. "Elaria?" She looked up. Lyra was watching her. "You disappeared again." "I'm fine." Lyra studied her for a moment but didn't push. That was why Elaria trusted her. Lyra noticed everything. But she also knew when to stay quiet. Meanwhile, across the academy, Kaelan stood inside the werewolf training grounds. The arena was one of Lunarcrest's oldest areas. The stone walls were marked with years of battles, and every student who entered knew they were expected to prove themselves. Rowan looked around. "First day and already everyone is talking about you." Kaelan adjusted his training gloves. "About me?" "You stopped a fight before breakfast." "It wasn't a big deal." "To you." Rowan laughed. "That's the problem. You don't realize how much people watch you." Kaelan ignored the comment. His attention moved toward the academy buildings. For a strange moment... He felt something. A familiar feeling. Like something was calling him. He frowned. The feeling disappeared before he could understand it. "Kaelan?" He looked back. "Nothing." But it wasn't nothing. Somewhere deep inside him, his wolf had awakened. And it was searching for something. That evening, as the moon rose above Lunarcrest Academy, something unusual happened. The ancient symbol in the centre of the main hall began to glow. No one was there to see it. No one except the shadows. Silver light moved across the floor, forming two connected marks. One belonged to the vampire bloodline. The other belonged to the werewolf bloodline. The symbols had not appeared together in centuries. Not since the night the Moon Goddess created the curse. Then, just as quickly as it appeared... The light vanished. But the academy had already received the message. Something had changed. Something that could either heal the broken bond between two races... Or destroy the fragile peace they had spent centuries protecting. And tomorrow, when the students returned to their classes, none of them would know that fate had already entered Lunarcrest Academy.
