Chapter 1: The Anniversary He Forgot
Vivian Hart stood in the middle of the grand dining room, smoothing an invisible wrinkle from the ivory tablecloth as if perfection alone could make her husband come home on time.
The room glowed beneath the soft light of a crystal chandelier. White lilies, Adrian's favorite flowers, filled a crystal vase at the center of the table. Two silver candleholders stood on either side of a dinner she had spent the entire afternoon preparing herself despite having a mansion full of staff.
Rosemary steak.
Creamy mushroom risotto.
Roasted asparagus.
And the chocolate truffle cake she had secretly ordered a week ago.
Written in delicate golden icing were four simple words.
Happy Third Anniversary.
Vivian smiled to herself.
Three years.
Three years since she had become Mrs. Adrian Kingsley.
Three years since she had promised herself that one day, somehow, her husband would look at her the way a husband should look at his wife.
She checked the time.
Six fifteen.
He usually finished work by six.
Maybe today he would surprise her.
Maybe today he would remember.
"Mrs. Kingsley?"
Vivian turned as Martha, the family's elderly housekeeper, stepped quietly into the dining room.
"The food is ready."
"Thank you."
Martha hesitated before speaking again.
"Would you like me to keep it warm?"
Vivian looked toward the large grandfather clock.
"He'll be here soon."
The older woman smiled sadly.
"I hope so."
Vivian noticed the pity hidden inside those two words.
Everyone in Kingsley Manor knew what kind of marriage she had.
Beautiful from the outside.
Empty on the inside.
Adrian had never mistreated her.
He had simply...
Never loved her.
When they first married, he had been polite.
Respectful.
Considerate.
But distant.
He never forgot birthdays or holidays.
He never raised his voice.
He provided everything money could buy.
Except himself.
Vivian used to tell herself he only needed time.
Three years later...
She was still waiting.
Her phone buzzed on the table.
Her heart skipped.
She grabbed it immediately.
The smile on her lips faded.
Emma.
Her best friend.
Emma: Happy anniversary! Please tell me your husband actually remembered this year.
Vivian stared at the message before typing a reply.
Vivian: He's still at work.
Emma responded almost instantly.
Viv...
Don't spend another anniversary alone.
Vivian looked toward the empty chair across from hers.
She smiled despite the ache growing inside her chest.
He'll come.
She pressed send.
Even as she wrote the words...
She wasn't sure she believed them.
...
Across the city, Adrian Kingsley stood inside the boardroom of Kingsley Group, listening as executives finalized the details of a billion-dollar acquisition.
Tall and impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit, Adrian commanded attention without saying much. His calm demeanor and sharp gray eyes had earned him a reputation as one of the youngest and most respected CEOs in the country.
His phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen.
Vivian
His thumb hovered over the notification.
Before he could open it, another phone rang.
His assistant hurried toward him.
"Mr. Kingsley."
Adrian looked up.
"What is it?"
"It's urgent."
The assistant lowered his voice.
"Miss Sophia Bennett returned to the country this afternoon."
Adrian's expression remained unreadable.
"So?"
"She collapsed at the airport."
For the first time that day...
His face changed.
"What hospital?"
"St. Aurora Medical Center."
The boardroom fell silent as Adrian grabbed his suit jacket.
"Continue the meeting without me."
No one dared question him.
Within seconds, he disappeared.
...
Back at Kingsley Manor...
Vivian stood by the living room window as twilight settled over the city.
Every pair of headlights that passed beyond the gates made her heart race.
Every time...
She was disappointed.
Seven o'clock.
She finally picked up her phone.
Happy anniversary. Dinner is ready. I'll wait for you.
She pressed send.
Delivered.
No reply.
Five minutes.
Ten.
Twenty.
Nothing.
Martha quietly approached.
"The food will get cold."
Vivian forced a smile.
"We'll warm it up when Adrian gets here."
The older woman looked as though she wanted to argue.
Instead, she simply nodded.
"Of course."
The mansion returned to silence.
It was a silence Vivian knew far too well.
Sometimes she wondered if loneliness had a sound.
If it did...
It sounded exactly like Kingsley Manor.
...
At St. Aurora Medical Center...
Sophia Bennett opened her eyes slowly.
The first face she saw was Adrian's.
A weak smile curved her lips.
"I must be dreaming."
"You fainted."
"So they called you."
"They found my number in your emergency contact."
Sophia looked embarrassed.
"I forgot to change it."
Neither of them spoke for several seconds.
Five years.
Five years since they had seen each other.
"You look well," Sophia whispered.
"You don't."
She laughed softly.
"Still terrible at compliments."
Before Adrian could answer, the hospital room door opened.
A nurse entered.
"The reporters found out you're here."
Sophia sighed.
"They're relentless."
"I'll handle them."
"You always did."
When they stepped outside together, camera flashes exploded like fireworks.
"Mr. Kingsley!"
"Is Miss Bennett the reason you left your office today?"
"Are you two back together?"
"What about your wife?"
Adrian ignored every question.
Seeing Sophia flinch beneath the blinding lights, he instinctively raised an arm to shield her face from the cameras.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Dozens of photographs captured the moment.
None of them showed the distance between them.
Only the illusion of intimacy.
...
Back at Kingsley Manor...
The television suddenly interrupted its regular programming.
Breaking Entertainment News.
Vivian looked up absentmindedly.
Then...
Her world stopped.
On the screen, Adrian stood beside Sophia outside the hospital.
His arm was around her.
Or at least...
That's how it looked.
The headline beneath the footage read:
BILLIONAIRE CEO ADRIAN KINGSLEY REUNITES WITH FIRST LOVE.
The news anchor smiled.
"Sources close to the Kingsley family claim Miss Bennett was once expected to marry Mr. Kingsley before her sudden departure overseas five years ago. Her unexpected return has reignited speculation surrounding the billionaire's arranged marriage to Vivian Hart."
Vivian couldn't hear another word.
Her fingers trembled around the remote.
She switched the television off.
The silence that followed hurt even more.
She remembered the countless rumors from three years ago.
"She's only the replacement."
"His grandfather forced him into that marriage."
"He'll leave her if Sophia ever comes back."
Vivian had spent years pretending those words didn't matter.
Tonight...
They echoed louder than ever.
The clock struck eight.
Then nine.
The candles burned lower.
The steak lost its warmth.
The cake remained untouched.
Still...
Vivian waited.
Because that's what she'd been doing for three years.
Waiting.
Finally, just after ten o'clock, the front gates opened.
A familiar black Rolls-Royce entered the driveway.
Vivian's heart leaped.
She hurried toward the foyer, smoothing her dress and wiping away the tears that had escaped despite her determination not to cry.
The front door opened.
Adrian stepped inside.
His expensive suit was slightly wrinkled, and exhaustion lined his handsome face.
He stopped the moment he saw the dining room behind her.
The candles.
The flowers.
The untouched dinner.
The cake.
Realization slowly crossed his features.
"...Today was our anniversary."
Vivian's smile trembled.
"You remembered."
His jaw tightened.
"I'm sorry."
She searched his face, silently hoping for an explanation that would somehow make the evening hurt less.
Instead, he said quietly,
"Sophia needed me."
Four words.
Four words that shattered everything she had spent three years trying to believe.
Vivian looked down at her wedding ring before lifting her eyes to meet his again.
"And who did I have, Adrian?"
For the first time since they married...
He had no answer.
The silence between them felt heavier than any argument.
And somewhere deep inside Vivian's heart, something that had survived for three long years finally began to c***k.
