I thought he was safe.

Calm. Attentive. Protective.

He listened when no one else did.

He stayed when everyone left.

But love isn’t supposed to feel like a cage.

And by the time I understood that…

I already belonged to him.

Chapter 1 — The Night I Should Have Forgotten
I didn’t know his name that night. I only knew the way he looked at me. The bar was too loud. Too crowded. And I was already tired of pretending I belonged there. I had come out because my friend insisted I needed to live a little. She left early. I stayed. That’s when I noticed him. He wasn’t trying to be seen. No loud laugh. No dramatic gestures. He stood near the counter, jacket still on, watching the room like he didn’t need anything from it. From anyone. Including me. Yet when our eyes met, he didn’t look away. I should have. Instead, something tightened in my chest. Not excitement. Not fear. Something quieter. He looked… certain. Like he already knew how the night would end. “You look like you want to disappear.” His voice was calm. Low. Too controlled for a place like this. “I’m fine,” I replied automatically. He tilted his head slightly, studying me. “You’re not,” he said. “But that’s okay.” I laughed, uncomfortable. “You say that to every stranger?” “No,” he answered. “Only the honest ones.” That should have been my warning. We talked. About nothing important. About work, mostly. He didn’t tell me much about himself. Only that he hated crowds and stayed longer than he should in places he didn’t enjoy. I told him more than I meant to. He listened like every word mattered. When he asked if I wanted to leave, I didn’t hesitate. His apartment was clean. Minimal. Almost cold. No photos. No personal touches. Just order. Control. “This is a bad idea,” I said softly, standing near the door. He stepped closer. Not touching me. Not yet. “Yes,” he agreed. “But you’re still here.” The kiss was slow. Careful. Like he was testing something. When his hand finally rested at my waist, it didn’t move. It stayed there. Firm. Claiming space. I didn’t stop him. Later, I lay awake beside him, staring at the ceiling. I told myself it didn’t matter. It was just one night. A stranger. Nothing more. In the morning, he was already dressed. “I won’t see you again,” I said, more to reassure myself than him. He smiled. Not warmly. Not cruelly. “We’ll see.” I left without asking his name. Three days later, I walked into my new office. And froze. He was standing at the front of the room, sleeves rolled up, calm as ever. “Good morning,” he said, his eyes locking onto mine. “I’m your new manager.” And just like that, the night I thought I could forget… became impossible to escape.
