Chapter 4 — The Second Awakening
Kael returned to the orphanage before sunrise.
He said nothing about the voice.
Not to Mira.
Not to anyone.
He couldn’t.
There were too many questions and not enough answers.
She gave it to you.
The words kept repeating in his mind.
Who was she?
His mother?
Was the voice referring to Lyra?
And what exactly had she given him?
Kael had spent the last twelve years believing his parents had been ordinary adventurers who had died during a demon attack.
Now he wasn’t so sure.
He entered the orphanage quietly and slipped into his room before anyone noticed.
For the next several hours, he pretended nothing had happened.
He attended school.
He answered questions when teachers called on him.
He ignored Daren.
He ate lunch alone.
Everything was normal.
Except that Kael could now see numbers everywhere.
The moment he entered the classroom, dozens of values appeared.
The wooden desks.
The windows.
The books.
The students.
Even the candles on the walls.
He had to constantly remind himself not to stare.
During mathematics, the teacher wrote a simple equation on the board.
Kael looked at it.
The numbers on the board were ordinary.
But then he noticed something strange.
The chalk itself had a value.
[Durability: 3]
Kael looked away immediately.
Stop.
He couldn’t let himself become distracted.
The System was dangerous.
Not because it was necessarily evil.
Because he didn’t understand it.
And anything he didn’t understand could become a problem.
⸻
After class, Kael was stopped at the academy gates.
Daren.
Again.
“You’ve been acting strange.”
Kael looked at him.
“I always act strange.”
“You know what I mean.”
“No.”
Daren stepped closer.
“You’ve been staring at everything.”
Kael said nothing.
“You finally lose your mind after failing your Awakening?”
One of the boys behind Daren laughed.
Kael sighed.
“I have somewhere to be.”
Daren grabbed his shoulder.
Kael looked down at the hand.
Then something caught his attention.
Numbers appeared.
[Grip Strength: 18]
Kael blinked.
That was new.
He could see the strength behind an action.
Not just the person.
Not just their overall strength.
The actual force being applied.
Kael gently removed Daren’s hand.
Daren frowned.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
Kael walked away.
He didn’t increase his strength.
He didn’t decrease Daren’s.
He simply left.
But as he walked home, one thought remained in his mind.
If I can change strength…
What happens if I change someone’s magical affinity?
⸻
That night, Kael returned to the hill.
He sat beneath the old oak and opened the System.
[Numerical System]
He focused on himself.
The familiar values appeared.
[Name: Kael Ardyn]
[Age: 16]
[Strength: 12]
[Agility: 10]
[Vitality: 11]
[Mana: 4]
[Fire Affinity: 10]
[Wind Affinity: 9]
[Lightning Affinity: 8]
[Earth Affinity: 11]
Kael studied them carefully.
He had spent nearly a month raising four of his affinities.
He hadn’t increased them recklessly.
A little at a time.
Testing how his body responded.
Learning how each element felt.
He could now produce small flames.
Move tiny currents of air.
Create faint sparks.
And manipulate small amounts of earth.
Nothing impressive.
Not yet.
But the potential was there.
Kael focused on Fire.
[Fire Affinity: 10]
He hesitated.
Then increased it.
[10 → 11]
Warmth spread through his chest.
Another.
[11 → 12]
The warmth became stronger.
Another.
[12 → 15]
Kael stopped.
He could feel mana moving through his body.
It was almost like a muscle being exercised.
His affinity wasn’t simply a number.
It represented his body’s ability to interact with fire.
And the more he increased it, the easier the element became to control.
Kael extended his hand.
A small flame appeared above his palm.
He stared at it.
It was brighter than yesterday.
He smiled.
Then extinguished it.
He looked at the other affinities.
Water.
Ice.
Light.
Darkness.
Spirit.
He left them alone.
There was no reason to rush.
He had already learned something important.
The System rewarded experimentation.
Not recklessness.
⸻
Three days later, the Awakening Ceremony arrived.
The entire academy was filled with excitement.
Students gathered around the enormous crystal inside the ceremonial hall.
It stood nearly three meters tall, its surface glowing faintly with blue light.
Kael stood at the back of the crowd.
He remembered the last ceremony.
The silence.
The embarrassment.
The laughter.
The examiner telling him that sometimes people simply weren’t meant to wield magic.
He remembered walking away while everyone watched.
Today felt different.
Kael wasn’t nervous.
He was curious.
The ceremony began.
One student after another stepped forward.
A hand touched the crystal.
Light erupted.
“Fire Affinity!”
Cheers.
Another student.
“Water Affinity!”
More cheers.
Then came a boy who awakened Wind and Earth.
The crowd erupted.
The examiner smiled.
“Excellent.”
Kael watched quietly.
Eventually, Daren stepped forward.
He placed his hand against the crystal.
The crystal immediately turned red.
A wave of heat spread through the hall.
The examiner’s eyes widened.
“Exceptional Fire Affinity!”
Daren grinned.
His friends cheered.
He turned toward Kael.
For a brief moment, their eyes met.
Daren smirked.
Kael looked away.
Let him enjoy it.
He wasn’t interested in proving anything today.
Not yet.
⸻
Names continued to be called.
Then:
“Kael Ardyn.”
The hall became noticeably quieter.
Kael walked forward.
Whispers followed him.
“Isn’t he the one who failed?”
“He’s getting another chance?”
“I heard people can awaken late.”
“Maybe he’ll get something this time.”
Kael stopped before the crystal.
He placed his hand against it.
Cold.
That was the first thing he felt.
Then—
Nothing.
The crystal remained dark.
The hall fell silent.
Kael’s expression didn’t change.
The examiner frowned.
“Wait.”
He adjusted the crystal.
“Try again.”
Kael pressed his hand against it.
Nothing.
A few students began whispering.
Daren laughed under his breath.
“Guess the Ghost really is a ghost.”
The examiner looked confused.
“Strange.”
He checked the crystal again.
Then Kael noticed something.
The System had appeared.
But unlike before, the message wasn’t blue.
It was gold.
[Numerical System detected.]
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
Another message appeared.
[Suppressing external detection.]
The crystal suddenly lit up.
The entire hall gasped.
The examiner stepped backward.
“Impossible.”
Four colors appeared within the crystal.
Red.
Green.
Purple.
Brown.
The examiner stared.
“Fire…”
The red light grew brighter.
“Wind…”
Green.
“Lightning…”
Purple.
“And Earth…”
Brown.
The four colors intertwined.
The examiner’s voice trembled.
“Four elemental affinities.”
The hall erupted.
Students shouted.
Teachers stood from their seats.
Even Daren’s smile disappeared.
Kael remained completely still.
He knew the truth.
The crystal wasn’t revealing what he had naturally awakened.
It was revealing what he had changed.
The examiner stared at the readings.
“Your affinities are…”
He swallowed.
“Exceptional.”
The crowd went silent again.
Someone whispered:
“Four exceptional affinities?”
“That can’t be possible.”
“Is he a genius?”
“After failing last year?”
Kael heard everything.
But then the System displayed another message.
[External assessment complete.]
[Public result generated.]
[Elemental Affinities: Fire — Wind — Lightning — Earth.]
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
Public result?
The System had intentionally altered what the crystal could see.
Why?
He didn’t know.
Before he could think further, the examiner spoke.
“Kael Ardyn…”
The man looked almost stunned.
“You’ve awakened.”
Kael slowly removed his hand from the crystal.
The hall erupted into applause.
For the first time since he had entered the academy, people weren’t laughing at him.
They were looking at him with surprise.
Some with admiration.
Some with jealousy.
Daren stared at him.
Kael ignored them all.
Because only he could see the final message.
[Numerical System successfully concealed.]
[Current Authority: 1]
Kael’s heart skipped.
Concealed?
The System had hidden itself.
From everyone.
Even the magical crystal.
Kael looked at his hands.
Whatever this power was…
it wasn’t ordinary.
And then another line appeared.
[New function unlocked.]
Kael froze.
[Numerical Analysis.]
His eyes widened.
The System had just given him something new.
He focused on the examiner.
For the first time, Kael didn’t simply see the man’s basic values.
He saw something deeper.
A web of numbers.
Hundreds of them.
Thousands.
Some he understood.
Others he didn’t.
And one value stood out.
[Mana Capacity: 486]
Kael stared.
The examiner was stronger than anyone in the room.
Much stronger.
But beneath that number was another.
One Kael hadn’t seen before.
[Numerical Resistance: 27]
Kael’s breathing slowed.
So that was it.
The stronger someone was…
the harder they might be to change.
He looked around the room.
Every person had a different number.
Every object.
Every spell.
Everything.
The world was filled with values nobody else could see.
And Kael was the only one who could read them.
The ceremony continued around him.
But Kael wasn’t listening anymore.
He had just discovered the first true limitation of his power.
And somehow…
he found himself more excited than afraid.
Because limitations could be overcome.
Numbers could change.
And if the System was willing to reveal its secrets one piece at a time—
Kael intended to uncover every single one.
