Chapter 1 — The Ghost
Chapter 1 — The Ghost Kael was running. He didn’t know where he was going. He only knew that something was behind him. The forest blurred around him as he pushed through the darkness. Branches tore at his clothes and scratched his skin, but he didn’t stop. His lungs burned. His legs felt heavy. Behind him, something roared. The sound shook the trees. Kael glanced over his shoulder. Two red eyes stared at him through the darkness. A demon. Its body was enormous, covered in black armor and twisted horns. Smoke poured from its mouth as it stepped between the trees. Kael stumbled. The ground beneath him cracked. He fell hard, scraping his palms against the dirt. The demon continued toward him. “No,” Kael whispered. He tried to move, but his body refused to obey. The demon raised one claw. A flash of fire filled the forest. Kael heard someone screaming. A woman. A man. His parents. He turned toward the sound and saw them standing in the flames. His mother reached for him. His father shouted something he couldn’t understand. Then the demon struck. Kael screamed. He woke up gasping. His body jerked upright, and the blanket fell to the floor. For several seconds, he could only stare into the darkness of his room. His heart pounded against his ribs. The nightmare clung to him like smoke. Fire. Blood. Those red eyes. Kael pressed a hand against his chest and forced himself to breathe. It was only a dream. It had been twelve years since his parents died. He barely remembered that night, yet the same nightmare returned again and again. Sometimes he saw the forest. Sometimes he saw fire. Sometimes he heard his mother’s voice calling his name. But the demon was always there. Kael wiped the sweat from his forehead and looked toward the window. Dawn had not yet arrived. The orphanage remained silent, with only the faint creaking of old wood breaking the stillness. He climbed out of bed and walked to the window. Asterfall slept beneath a blanket of darkness. Soon, the academy bells would ring. Soon, he would have to face another day. Kael dressed quickly and left his room. ⸻ The bell rang three times. Students poured out of the academy gates, laughing and shouting as they made their way into the streets of Asterfall. Some discussed their upcoming Awakening Ceremony. Others bragged about the affinities they were certain they would receive. Kael Ardyn walked alone. He always did. His hands rested inside the pockets of his worn coat as he followed the familiar road toward the orphanage. His dark hair moved slightly in the evening breeze, but he paid it no attention. Behind him, a voice called out. “Hey, Ghost!” Kael stopped. He didn’t turn around. Footsteps approached. Daren Holt and two of his friends caught up with him. Daren wore the confident smile of someone who had never doubted his place in the world. “You really planning to take the Awakening again?” Daren asked. Kael continued walking. “I heard there’s a record for failing twice,” one of the boys laughed. “Maybe he’ll awaken an affinity for embarrassment.” They laughed. Kael said nothing. That was what annoyed Daren most. “I’m talking to you.” Kael finally looked over his shoulder. “Okay.” Daren’s smile twitched. “That’s it?” “You were talking. I heard you.” His friends laughed again, but this time at Daren. Daren’s expression darkened. “You really think you’re better than everyone, don’t you?” “No.” Kael turned away. “Then why do you act like that?” “Like what?” “Like you don’t care.” Kael paused. For a moment, he considered answering. Then he simply continued walking. Daren clicked his tongue. “Ghost.” The nickname followed Kael down the street. It had started when they were younger. Nobody knew exactly who had said it first. Perhaps it was because Kael rarely spoke. Perhaps because he was always alone. Perhaps because he had a habit of appearing beside people without them noticing. Whatever the reason, it stuck. Ghost. Kael didn’t mind. A ghost didn’t need friends. At least, that’s what he told himself. ⸻ The orphanage was quiet when Kael arrived. “Back already?” Mira called from the kitchen. “Yeah.” “You eat?” “Not yet.” “Then wash your hands.” Kael obeyed. Mira Veyne had raised him for most of his life. She wasn’t his mother, and she never pretended to be. But she had been there. When he was sick. When he had nightmares. When other children laughed at him. When he failed his first Awakening. She had always been there. Kael sat at the table while Mira placed a bowl of stew in front of him. “You’ve been quiet lately,” she said. “I’ve always been quiet.” “You’ve been quieter.” Kael looked at her. “That’s not possible.” Mira smiled. “Maybe not.” Kael ate. For several minutes, neither spoke. Then Mira sighed. “Your second ceremony is next month.” “I know.” “You nervous?” “No.” “You should be.” Kael raised an eyebrow. “Why?” “Because this time matters.” He looked down at his bowl. At fifteen, almost everyone in his class had awakened. Some received weak affinities. Some received powerful ones. A few had even awakened rare talents. Kael had received nothing. The crystal had remained completely silent. The examiner had tried twice. Nothing. For most people, failing to awaken meant waiting for the second ceremony. For Kael, it had meant a year of being called useless. He had learned to ignore it. Or at least pretend he had. Mira reached across the table and placed a hand over his. “Whatever happens, you’re not useless.” Kael stared at her hand. Something about the warmth made an old memory surface. A woman’s hand. Smaller than Mira’s. Soft. Warm. A voice humming quietly. Then another memory. A man’s laugh. A rough cloak wrapped around him. Strong arms lifting him onto someone’s shoulders. Kael blinked. The memories disappeared. They always did. He barely remembered his parents anymore. He had been four when they died. Adventurers. That was what Mira had told him. Aric and Lyra Ardyn had traveled across Elyndra searching for ancient ruins and forgotten treasures. Then one expedition had gone wrong. Demons had attacked. Neither parent returned. Kael remembered almost nothing about that night. Only fire. Darkness. And fear. He hated demons because of that night. He had never questioned it. ⸻ That evening, Kael left the orphanage and walked toward the hill overlooking Asterfall. It was his favorite place. Nobody came there. The town stretched beneath him, its lanterns slowly beginning to glow as night approached. Kael sat beneath an old tree. Tomorrow would be another day of classes. Another day of being the Ghost. Another day of waiting. He closed his eyes. For some reason, he felt strange. Not sick. Not tired. Just… Different. A faint pressure spread through his body. Kael opened his eyes. Nothing. He frowned. Then something appeared. A small blue window floated in front of him. Kael froze. He stared. The window remained. He reached toward it. His finger passed through. “What…?” More symbols appeared. [Compatibility confirmed.] Kael’s breathing stopped. [Acclimation process: Complete.] [Host identified.] [Numerical System awakening.] Kael stood. The world suddenly changed. Numbers appeared everywhere. The tree beside him. [Age: 143] The stone beneath his foot. [Durability: 19] The distance to the town. [Distance: 847] Kael stumbled backward. “What is this?” He looked at his own hand. Numbers surrounded it. Not one. Dozens. Strength. Agility. Mana. Vitality. Affinity. Everything had a value. Everything. Kael stared at the information in disbelief. Then one final window appeared. [Unique Authority detected.] [Numerical Manipulation.] [Available Function:] [Increase] Kael’s heart began pounding. He looked toward the town. Hundreds of people were walking through the streets. And around every single one of them… Numbers. Kael slowly raised his hand. He didn’t know what would happen. He didn’t know why this was happening. He didn’t know what his parents had left inside him twelve years ago. But for the first time in his life, Kael Ardyn felt something other than loneliness. He felt possibility. His eyes moved to the number beside the tree’s durability. 19. Kael focused on it. A faint blue glow gathered around his fingers. At the same time, something inside his body shifted. His mana. He could feel it flowing through him, thin and unstable, like a small stream beneath ice. The System responded. [Target selected: Durability.] [Current value: 19.] [Mana required to increase value: 1.] Kael hesitated. He had no idea how much mana he possessed. If he used too much, he might collapse. Still, curiosity overcame caution. He pushed a small amount of mana toward his hand. The blue glow brightened. [Increase value by 1?] Kael swallowed. “Increase.” The number changed. 19 → 20 The tree trembled. A sharp wave of exhaustion struck Kael. His knees weakened, and he caught himself against the trunk. His breathing became heavy. The System displayed another message. [Mana consumed: 1.] [Remaining mana: 9.] Kael stared at the words. He could only increase values. And every increase required mana. The ability wasn’t limitless. Not yet. He looked at his hand, then at the tree. A smile slowly appeared on his face. It was the smallest smile. Almost invisible. But it was there. The Ghost had finally awakened. And for the first time, Kael understood that power was not something given freely. It was something he would have to earn, one point at a time.
