Chapter 5 — Beyond the Surface
Kael didn’t move.
The Awakening crystal continued to glow in front of him, its light reflecting across the silent ceremony hall.
Fire.
Wind.
Lightning.
Earth.
Four Exceptional affinities.
The examiner stared at the crystal as if it had personally offended everything he understood about magic.
Around Kael, whispers slowly spread through the crowd.
“Four?”
“That’s impossible.”
“Did the crystal malfunction?”
“Those are all Exceptional…”
Kael barely heard them.
His attention was somewhere else.
Floating in front of his vision were numbers no one else could see.

And beneath them—

Kael’s eyes narrowed.
He understood what the first values meant.
But the last one was different.

The System had shown it to him before, but only now did he understand its importance.
The examiner stepped toward him.
“Kael Ardyn.”
Kael looked up.
“Yes?”
“Have you ever trained with magic before?”
“No.”
The answer was technically true.
Kael had trained with magic for the past month.
But only in secret.
He had spent weeks increasing his elemental affinities little by little, testing what his body could handle and learning how mana responded to his thoughts.
He hadn’t cast a single spell in front of anyone.
The examiner studied him suspiciously.
“Then how do you explain this?”
Kael glanced at the crystal.
“I don’t know.”
It was the safest answer.
The examiner clearly wasn’t satisfied, but he eventually stepped aside.
“Regardless, your Awakening has been recorded.”
A few more tests followed.
Kael answered quietly.

Residence.
Nothing complicated.
Eventually, the ceremony ended.
Students began leaving the hall in groups, talking excitedly about the results.
Kael remained behind for a moment.

Kael stopped walking.
So that was why the System had changed.
He looked around.

Kael stared.
Then he noticed something.

Kael frowned.
What was stability?
He concentrated.

Kael’s expression changed.
So even the new function had limits.
Understanding still mattered.
That made sense.

Kael looked toward the academy in the distance.
For the first time since his power awakened, he realized something important.

Kael sat across from her.

Kael looked down.

Her words reminded him of something Elias had said after his first failed Awakening.
Being late doesn’t mean you’re incapable.
Kael hadn’t thought much about those words at the time.
Now they felt different.
Mira stood and placed food in front of him.
“You’ve spent enough time worrying about what other people think.”
Kael looked at her.
“Eat.”
He almost smiled.
“Yes, Mira.”
For a while, neither spoke.
Then Mira suddenly asked, “Kael… did anything strange happen during the ceremony?”
His hand stopped.
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t know.”
She frowned.
“When the crystal activated, I felt something.”
Kael’s expression remained calm.
“What kind of something?”
Mira shook her head.
“It’s difficult to explain.”
Kael waited.
“Like standing near something very old.”
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“Old?”
“Yes.”
Mira looked toward the window.
“For just a moment, I thought I heard someone whispering.”
Kael’s heartbeat quickened.
“Did you hear what they said?”
Mira shook her head.
“No.”
Kael looked down at his food.
He didn’t tell her about the voice he’d heard in the forest.
He didn’t tell her about the words.
She gave it to you.
And he definitely didn’t tell her about the System.
That secret was his.
At least for now.

His desk.
The wooden walls.

Kael’s eyes widened.

Kael froze.

Kael immediately stood.
His eyes turned toward the window.
Outside, the village was silent.
Too silent.
Then he saw it.
At the edge of the forest, between the trees, something moved.

A figure appeared.
Humanoid.
Tall.
Wrapped in darkness.
Kael’s eyes widened as Numbers began appearing around it.

Some were completely hidden.

The figure slowly turned toward the orphanage.

Kael froze.
The same voice.
The same ancient tone.
But this time, it wasn’t a whisper.
It was close.
Very close.
The figure took one step forward.
And smiled.
“So you’re the one carrying it.”
