Chapter 1: The Fated Curse
Rhea did not know how many leagues of jagged, black permafrost she had left behind in the freezing dark.
The skin on the soles of her bare feet had long since been flayed raw, stripped down to blooming pink tissue by volcanic obsidian shards, frozen shale, and the razor-tipped needles of the petrified Ironwood canopy. Every ragged breath dragged down her parched windpipe felt like inhaling crushed volcanic glass. Her lungs burned with an icy, agonizing fire, searing her chest until a heavy, metallic copper taste flooded her mouth, coating the back of her teeth.
Behind her, echoing through the petrified trunks of the Crimson Wasteland, the baying of the hounds tore through the howling gale.
Sharp. Voracious. Closing with impossible, unnatural speed.
They were not earthly dogs. These were vampire bloodhounds—skeletal, hairless monstrosities bred in the subterranean kennels of the Crimson Court, sculpted with elongated jaws, double-jointed limbs, and needle-thin fangs dripping with acidic saliva. Their milky, pupil-less red eyes did not track footprints; they tracked the thermal steam radiating from her escaping life-force, homing in on the unique, spiced-honey scent of her hybrid pulse.
She was only a slave. For nineteen years, the totality of Rhea’s existence had been measured by the rusted iron perimeter of a subterranean feeding cage inside the lower catacombs of the Crimson Court. By daylight, when the vampire aristocrats slumbered in their velvet-lined sarcophagi, she scrubbed arterial stains from obsidian mosaic floors until her fingernails split and bled into the mortar. By nightfall, she was dragged into the flickering torchlight to serve as a living flask—a disposable vessel whose strange, resilient vitality was drained by sadistic vampire lords to satisfy their perverse, immortal appetites.
She was a nameless creature in the dark, a freakish hybrid anomaly that neither wolves nor vampires claimed as kin. The vampires despised her wolf blood, calling her an unholy mongrel fit only for s*******r; the wild werewolf packs of the borderlands would have torn her apart for carrying the cold, stagnant taint of the leeches. They kept her alive solely because her blood tasted sweet and never seemed to run dry, regenerating with an unnatural, stubborn resilience that defied physical law. Whenever an overseer drove a bronze extraction quill into her veins, her flesh stitched itself back together within hours, leaving only faint, silvery lattice scars along her forearms.
Tonight, fate had cracked open a sliver of opportunity.
An iron transport wagon, laden with border tithes and heavy adamantine ore, had shattered an axle along the jagged northern ridge. A blinding, howling whiteout had descended without warning, plunging the mountain pass into absolute chaos. A single overseer had turned his head to whip a mired bloodhorse, cursing into the freezing wind.
That single second of carelessness was all she needed.
She had slipped beneath the broken iron undercarriage and sprinted headlong into the storm.
The price of her defiance was a silver-tipped crossbow bolt that had slashed across her left calf during the initial pursuit. Hot, steaming blood soaked through her threadbare burlap tunic, dripping into the pristine snow and leaving a luminous crimson trail that screamed her coordinates to the hunting party.
"Over there! The hybrid wench broke toward the northern precipice!"
A snarling shout cracked like an iron whip through the freezing gale. Red leather cloaks flashed like licking flames between the black birch trunks. Silver-tipped bolts hissed through the snowstorm, splintering the frozen bark inches above Rhea’s ear with high-pitched thuds.
Rhea clamped her jaw tight, biting down on the soft flesh of her lip until blood joined the copper taste in her mouth. She didn't look back. She couldn't. To hesitate for half a heartbeat was to invite a slow, agonizing death—or worse, to be dragged back in heavy adamantine chains to the lower dungeons, where the High Priest's scalpel waited to dissect whatever secret kept her heart beating.
Her bare feet struck another patch of razor shale, sending a sharp jolt of agony straight up her spine. She stumbled, catching herself against the petrified bark of an ancient ironwood tree. The wood was cold as gravestones, sap frozen solid into amber tears. Behind her, the rhythmic snapping of branches grew deafeningly loud. She could smell them now—the cloying, sweet stench of embalming oils, dead blood, and wet hounds.
Suddenly, the dense thicket of black pines ended in a sheer, dizzying drop.
Before her rose an ancient cyclopean monolith of jagged black stone, carved into the sheer face of the mountain. Towering wolf-skull totems, their gaping jaws half-buried in five centuries of undisturbed permafrost, stood like gargantuan sentinels guarding the threshold of the abyss. The air here was ten degrees colder than the forest behind her—dense, static-charged, smelling heavily of ozone, scorched sulfur, and untamed, primordial beast fury.
The Frostfang Boundary. The Forbidden Territory of the Werewolves.
Behind her, the thundering vampire hounds skidded to a violent, frantic halt. Their bloodthirsty baying choked instantly into pathetic, high-pitched whimpers. The beasts threw their bodies backward, clawing at the frozen sod in desperation to put distance between themselves and the stone totems.
The trackers violently reined in their bloodhorses, the red-eyed war mares rearing back in genuine terror, iron-shod hooves churning up snow as their flared nostrils caught the ancient scent radiating from the shrine.
"Halt! Do not cross the totems!" the vampire strike-commander hissed, his elongated white fangs bared in frantic warning as his mount fought violently against the bit. "That is the cursed burial ground of Kael Voss! Step a single inch across that boundary line, and the frost will devour your blood before your corpse hits the snow!"
"Commander, the runaway—she’s heading straight for the gorge!"
"Let the worthless mongrel leap!" the commander spat, venom lacing his terrified sneer. "Nothing survives the Frostfang Shrine. Let the ice devour her bones."
Rhea didn't hesitate.
Between the slow, systematic butchery of vampire fangs and the unknown horrors of werewolf ice, she chose the void without a backward glance. Gathering every scrap of adrenaline left in her trembling limbs, she hurled herself past the totems, plunging directly into the howling, snow-choked dark.
The frozen ground gave way beneath her.
Rhea tumbled down a dizzyingly steep chute of subterranean black ice, crashing through crystalline shelves of frost before slamming heavily onto a polished cavern floor.
Silence crashed down upon her ears like an iron bell.
The roar of the blizzard above was cut off as if sliced by a blade. It was replaced by an eerie, suffocating chill that froze the perspiration on her brow and turned the moisture of her eyelashes to brittle needles of ice.
Rhea pushed herself up on trembling forearms, shivering violently from the bone-deep cold.
The cavern was colossal, rising like an underground gothic cathedral carved entirely from diamond-ice and black basalt pillars. In the center of the vast expanse, elevated upon nine tiered steps of volcanic obsidian, rested a colossal sarcophagus.
It was sculpted from a single slab of black glacial crystal, bound in heavy, interlocking chains of dark scarlet iron that pulsed with ancient blood-magic runes. Inside the semi-translucent ice, a towering, broad-shouldered silhouette lay entombed in an eternal, five-hundred-year slumber.
"A tomb...?" Rhea whispered, her teeth chattering in frantic rhythms that echoed through the quiet hall.
Her wounded leg throbbed with white-hot, agonizing pulses. Dragging her deadened limb behind her, she pulled herself toward the base of the obsidian platform, desperate for a solid stone against which she could brace herself while tearing a strip of cloth from her tunic to staunch the arterial flow. Her vision swam with black static from blood loss.
She reached out blindly to steady her swaying balance.
Her right hand, slick and steaming with fresh, hot hybrid blood, slapped flat against the surface of the black ice sarcophagus.
Her blood did not freeze upon the sub-zero crystal.
It hissed.
Like drops of volatile oil striking glowing embers, the steaming crimson droplets seeped instantly into the microscopic fractures of the black ice. The ancient blood-magic chains binding the coffin flared with blinding arcs of silver and scarlet lightning.
BOOM!
The subterranean hall shook violently as if struck by a falling mountain. Massive icicles shattered from the vaulted ceiling, crashing into powder against the stone steps. The scarlet blood-chains cracked in unison with an ear-splitting snap, disintegrating into swirling clouds of burning ember ash.
The glacial lid exploded outward in a massive shockwave of pressurized, sub-zero frost.
Rhea was hurled through the air by the concussive blast, slamming hard against an obsidian pillar before collapsing onto the stones. Before she could even draw breath to scream, an invisible, celestial weight crashed down upon the room.
The atmospheric pressure shifted violently, warping the air into visible ripples of gold and black energy. Her knees hit the granite floor with a brutal crunch. The air was violently evacuated from her lungs by the sheer physical gravity radiating from the altar. She could not move a finger; she could not even raise her chin by a millimeter.
From the swirling mist of pulverized ice and burning runes, a towering figure stepped down onto the obsidian steps.
He stood six-foot-four, his midnight hair spilling past broad, muscle-sculpted shoulders crosshatched with ancient battle scars. A heavy mantle of black wolf-fur draped over his iron-plated cuirass. His skin was pale as moonlight, but his aura burned with the raw, terrifying violence of an apex warlord breaking five centuries of chains.
He opened his eyes.
Dark amber ringed in molten gold. Slit pupils. The predatory, untamed gaze of the Supreme Werewolf Monarch.
"Five hundred years..." his voice rolled across the cavern floor like deep bedrock thunder, raspy and resonant. "Who dares disturb the slumber of Kael Voss?"
His golden gaze drifted down the nine obsidian steps, locking onto the trembling girl pinned flat against the stone floor.
He inhaled deeply. His flared nostrils caught the distinct, unmistakable scent of the Crimson Court.
"Vampire filth," Kael spat, his sharp features twisting into absolute, murderous disgust. "The blood-suckers send a slave to mock my awakening? Seeking death."
He vanished.
A blur of impossible, apex speed. Before Rhea could blink, the Alpha towered directly above her. His right hand, tipped with razor-sharp black obsidian claws, swept down in a lethal, merciless arc aimed straight for her exposed throat.
Death was half an inch away.
Rhea closed her eyes tightly. She did not scream. She did not beg. If dying on the ice meant never returning to the iron pens of the Crimson Court, she would take the blow with open arms.
CLANG!
The razor claws stopped dead in mid-air, trembling violently a fraction of a breath from her jugular vein.
"Ugh—!"
A strangled gasp tore from Kael’s throat. His towering frame shuddered violently as if struck by a lightning bolt from within. The cold killing intent in his golden eyes shattered into raw, bewildered agony.
His left hand flew to his own breastplate, his iron gauntlet tearing into the leather beneath. His heart felt as though an invisible, spiked iron fist was crushing the muscle into pulp.
At that exact second, a violent, suffocating cramp seized Rhea’s own chest. Her ribcage flared with identical, searing agony; the breath was torn from her lungs as her heart fluttered in frantic, excruciating synchronization with the monster before her.
A thin line of dark, hot blood welled at the corner of Kael’s lips, dripping down his chiseled jaw onto the white frost.
Rhea opened her eyes, gasping for air. The invincible beast who had been on the verge of slaughtering her had dropped heavily onto one knee before her, his breath hitching in ragged, pained gasps.
A searing heat suddenly ignited at the base of Rhea’s skull.
It felt like a branding iron pressed directly against her spine. Beneath the collar of her ragged tunic, an ancient birthmark began to burn with brilliant, luminous silver light.
A flawless silver crescent moon.
Kael forced his head up, his molten golden gaze colliding directly with the glowing crescent burning upon her nape. His slit pupils constricted into razor-thin needlepoints.
"The Fated Curse..." he grated between clenched teeth, his voice trembling with a mixture of fury, disbelief, and primal shock. "The soul-bind... What dark sorcery have you cast upon my core?!"
"I... I don't know!" Rhea stammered, clutching her burning neck, her chest aching in twin agonizing rhythm with his. "I was running! I only touched the ice to keep from falling—I didn't cast anything!"
"Liar!" Kael growled. He raised his claws again, fighting through the cardiac agony by sheer, brutal willpower, determined to sever the head of the witch before him.
Yet the instant his killing intent peaked, a violent spasm struck his chest so hard his vision blacked out. Hot blood surged up his throat. His life-force was draining in direct, mathematical proportion to her terror and pain.
To kill her was to kill himself.
Silence reclaimed the frozen temple, thick and heavy. Only the ragged sound of two synchronized breaths filled the vast darkness.
Kael Voss knelt in the frost for three agonizingly long seconds, staring at the slave girl as if she were a venomous viper he could neither swallow nor strike.
Then, he moved.
Without a single word of explanation, his massive, scarred hand shot out, seizing the rough collar of Rhea's tunic in an iron grip.
"Ah!" Rhea gasped as he hoisted her effortlessly off her feet with a single arm.
"Move," he commanded, his voice cold as the glacier that had imprisoned him.
Rhea did not submit. Gritting her teeth against the blinding ache in her wounded leg, her hands flew up, fingernails digging furiously into the rock-hard sinews of his wrist. She clawed at his iron grip with fierce, unyielding defiance, fighting with every scrap of spirit she had left.
"Where are you taking me? Put me down! Let me go!" she cried, kicking with her good foot against his armored thighs.
Kael did not even slacken his pace. He dragged her across the obsidian stones toward the subterranean exit, his stride relentless, ignoring her clawing fingers as though they were nothing more than a summer drizzle against granite.
"Until I unravel whatever blood-hex you have bound to my core," Kael Voss growled, leaning down so his icy breath, smelling of pine smoke and mountain frost, cut against the shell of her ear: "Your life belongs to me."
He tightened his grip, golden eyes blazing with lethal authority toward the howling blizzard outside:
"Dare to die... and this Alpha will make you beg for hell."
The silver crescent mark on Rhea's neck pulsed once more, throbbing like a second, defiant heartbeat against her spine.
As the howling frost of the northern wilderness swallowed them both, one terrifying truth settled deep into her marrow—
In this lifetime, she would never escape this monster.
