CHAPTER SIX
OCTOBER 8, 1960
Not long after the dead chicken incident, I was packing my suitcases so I could head for greener pastures when Ollie knocked on my door and asked me to escort her to the town Fish Fry. I was already feeling guilty about leaving, so I decided it wouldn’t hurt me to stick around long enough to accompany her to some hokey town event. Besides, I’ve suddenly developed this strange desire to protect her.
When Ollie and I got to the fire station where the fish fry was being held, the first thing we did was load up on hot dogs, corn, slaw, and some amazing fire-roasted corn. No fish for me, I told her, as I always make it a point to avoid anything that poops in its own bath water.
