CHAPTER THIRTY DECEMBER 20, 1960 After the horrible incident at the lake, I was up all night. Norma Marie and Russ arrived in the morning to pick up his truck and check up on me, but I didn’t go downstairs. I tossed the keys out my bedroom door to Ollie and said I was too sick to get up. After they left, I sat in the closet a long time until I had to get up and take a handful of painkillers for my leg. I don’t know how many I took—half a bottle, I think. Now I’m having difficulty focusing. I passed out for some time, but then I rallied long enough to finish packing the last of my belongings. While emptying my closet, I discovered I still had Laura’s Walt Whitman book. Out of curiosity, I read the poem she said reminded her of me, “I Sing the Body Electric.” One of the lines really jump
