The Dream That Should Not Exist
The morning light spilled through the tall glass windows of Aria Hale's small apartment, painting golden lines across her pale blue blanket. She blinked a few times, trying to hold onto the fading images that still shimmered behind her eyelids. A bridge made of light. A boy with silver eyes. A whisper calling her name. She sat up quickly, heart racing. People in Lunaris never dreamed. Everyone knew that. Dreams had disappeared years ago, leaving behind a silent world that worked perfectly, without wonder or imagination. But Aria had dreamed. She was sure of it. Her room was quiet except for the soft hum of the city outside. Lunaris always hummed. The sound came from the silver trains sliding above the streets and the tall towers filled with endless lights that never turned off. Everything in the city was smooth, efficient, and carefully controlled. Yet Aria had always felt something missing, like there was a blank space inside her that nothing could fill. She pressed her hand to her chest and whispered, "It felt so real." In the dream, she had stood on a glowing bridge that hung above a sea of stars. The air had been warm and soft, and then a voice had said her name. When she turned, she saw him. The boy had eyes like liquid silver and a faint smile that made her heart flutter even now. He had reached for her hand, but before she could touch him, everything went dark. Aria shook her head. "No one dreams," she told herself again. "It's impossible." At school that morning, she tried to ignore the feeling in her chest. The other students moved like quiet shadows, sitting at their perfect desks, answering every question with the same calm tone. The teachers never raised their voices. The lessons were about data, work, and systems, never about stories or art. When her friend Lila sat beside her, Aria tried to act normal. "Did you sleep well?" Lila gave a short nod. "Yes. No disturbances. You?" Aria opened her mouth, then hesitated. She wanted to tell her about the bridge, the stars, the boy. But something inside warned her not to. People who said strange things in Lunaris were sent to the "Adjustment Center." No one ever came back the same. "I slept fine," Aria said instead, forcing a smile. That afternoon, she walked home through the city square. The streets were shining with polished metal tiles, and tall towers reflected the pale sun. The air smelled faintly of electricity. A large screen above the main plaza showed the usual message: "Dreamless minds create a perfect world." Aria stared at the words for a long time. Perfect world. It didn't feel perfect to her. It felt quiet and empty, like a painting without color. She turned away and headed toward the old part of the city. Few people went there anymore because it was filled with broken buildings and flickering lights. Her mother used to warn her not to wander there, but Aria liked it. It was the only place in Lunaris that didn't feel controlled. As she walked deeper into the shadows, she noticed something strange. A soft golden light was glowing between two ruined buildings. It flickered gently, like a heartbeat. Curiosity pulled her closer. When she stepped into the narrow alley, the air changed. The humming of the city faded away. The light grew brighter, filling the space with a warm glow. And then she saw him. The boy from her dream. He stood by the cracked wall, his silver eyes watching her. His clothes were simple, dark, but his presence felt unreal, like he didn't fully belong to this world. Aria froze. "You're real." He tilted his head, his lips curling into a faint smile. "You remembered." Her breath caught in her throat. "What are you talking about? Who are you?" He took a step closer. The air around him shimmered slightly, like light bending through water. "My name is Kai. You are not supposed to remember your dreams, Aria. No one in this city is." Her heart pounded. "How do you know my name?" "I've been looking for you," he said softly. "Because you are the only one left who can still dream on her own." Aria felt dizzy. The words didn't make sense. "This is crazy. People don't dream. They can't." Kai looked up at the gray sky above the buildings. "They used to. Before the Dream Keepers took that away." She frowned. "Dream Keepers?" He nodded slowly. "They are the ones who rule this city. They steal people's dreams to feed their power. Every memory of hope, every wish, every piece of imagination-they collect them and lock them away. That is why Lunaris feels empty. Without dreams, there is no heart left." Aria stared at him, her thoughts spinning. It sounded impossible. Yet deep inside, something in her whispered that it was true. "If that's real," she said quietly, "then why can I still dream?" Kai looked at her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. "Because you are different. You were born with a heart that resists their control. That's why I found you in the dream world." She stepped back, unsure whether to believe him. "Why me?" "Because," he said softly, "you might be the key to restoring the world's dreams." The glow around him flickered as if it were fading. He looked suddenly weak, his hand trembling. Aria reached forward instinctively. "What's wrong?" "I can't stay long in this world," he said, his voice quiet. "I exist between dream and reality. The more I stay here, the weaker I become." Before she could say anything else, his form began to fade like mist. His voice lingered, soft as a whisper. "Find the light beneath the city. It will lead you to the truth." Then he was gone.Aria stood in the alley, her heart pounding, the golden light slowly fading into darkness. She wanted to believe it had all been a trick of her mind, but she could still feel the warmth of his presence. And somewhere deep inside, she knew this was only the beginning. When she walked back into the bright streets of Lunaris, the giant screen flashed again. "Dreamless minds create a perfect world." This time, Aria whispered back, "Then maybe the world isn't perfect at all."
