Chapter 7

I slowly walked down the stairs to the hall where the dinner was taking place. All eyes turned towards me as I walked down the stairs with Maria. “It ok my lady, as long as lord Akira wants you alive no one can harm you here” Maria whispered into my ears. “How could you tell?” I asked “The look in your eyes screams fear” she replied with a smile. Soon I was standing in the hall and I knew Maria wasn’t allowed to be there with me. She had left after escorting me to the hall. Everyone seemed to be engaged in something while I just stood there staring, possibly looking through the crowd in search of Lord Akira. He wasn’t here yet. Just then, a white haired lady walked up to me with two glasses of wine in her hand. “You must be Amanda” she said with a smile as she stretches the glass of wine towards me. I received the wine “Thanks, but how do you know my name?” I asked wearing a confused look. “My brother told me a lot about you” she answered. “What brother?” I asked again still confused. “Hansel, you’ve met him before, he was the one who brought you here along with my elder brother Akira” she explained. The Hansel guy must be the first person I saw when I opened my eyes. And this person must be Akira’s and that Hansel’s sister. “I’m Luna, Akira’s junior and only sister” she said with a smile. “It’s nice to meet you” I replied with a fake smile. I’ve never heard of that name before, Luna, she’s someone who was never in the story just like Akira. “Drink up, the ceremony will start once Akira gets here” she said. I took a stare at the glass I was holding, is it safe for me to drink this? How do I know she’s not trying to poison me, maybe she thinks I’m responsible for her brother’s death. “Scared?” She asked like she could read my thoughts. “I wouldn’t poison you if I want to keep my head intact, my brother wants you alive for a reason” she added. Maria had said that earlier. I slowly raised the glass towards my mouth and took a gulp. “See! It’s not poisoned” she said with a laugh. Soon the music stopped and everywhere was quiet, the people who were discussing with each other were now quiet. “What’s going on?” I asked Luna. “My brother’s here already” she replied with a smile. They had to keep silent just for him to enter? Just who could this guy be? Not even a king, even when my father enters into a ball, his presence is only announced and everyone can still go ahead with what they were doing. All eyes turned to the entrance as they bowed their heads. I followed suit. He walked from then entrance down to where then table was set for the dinner and sat at the end of the table. I lifted my head to see if the others were still bowing but they weren’t. “Come on, let’s go” Luna said as she walked towards the table and I followed suit. Soon we were all seated at the table, foods were being served by the maids but everywhere was still silent. “You must all be wondering why our Lord Akira has asked for this gathering” elder Jerad said. “A tragedy has befallen us, we have lost one of our own who was supposed to have sealed the knot with the kingdom of omene. May his soul Rest In Peace, our own dear Lord Adrian” he added. Everyone at the table raised up their glasses for a while in silence and then finally dropped it. “We cannot afford to slack on our own side of the bargain with omene, so Lord Akira has decided that the knot will still be tied” the elder finally said. What knot? I was trying to understand what the elder was saying, lord Adrain died. So what other knot is there to be tied? “So tonight we’ll drink and make merry to celebrate the union between the princess of omene and our very own lord Akira” the elder added. Everyone at the table gave a round of applause after the elder had finished his speech. Soon conversations started and everyone began to eat and make merry. First he wanted me to help him find his brother’s killer and now he wants to tie the knot? How would I be able to get married to someone like him? Just the tone of his voice made me shiver. I remembered his words, he warned me never to try running if I didn’t want to die. Mere looking at him just sit there at the end of the table made me want to scream. He just sat there staring into the wall like he wasn’t even listening to what the elder was saying. The more I stared at him, the more I got the thought of running away, but what if I get caught? No, that’s not a good idea. I had always tried to run from lord Adrian but every time I tried Maria always gets to pay the price, I wouldn’t want to hurt her again.
