Prologue
Divorce.
Her throat closed up and her small hands tightened into fists at the mere thought of the word. She was only twenty-three years old, and she thought she had it all. All that she had ever dreamt about. A husband who loved her, a small lovely house with a white picket fence, and a golden retriever. But sadly, that wasn’t the reality, that was merely the dream Katherine kept forcing her mind to believe was her life.
After three years of an abusive marriage, a marriage where she endured both physical and psychological oppress, Katherine couldn’t take more, and it was time to put an end to it and try to mend her life back into something close to what it used to be like before her husband, before Drake.
“Mrs. Miller, I’m sorry to inform you that, but Mr. Miller refused to grant you the divorce and he said that he doesn’t wish for a divorce.”
“But, I can’t… can't get back to him, I want this divorce, and nothing Drake says will change my mind”
“Then, there is only one solution back, we take it to curt.”
“Take it to curt, do whatever you have to do, I just want my life back”
“I’m warning you, Mrs. Miller, it’ll take time, years in fact and it’ll probably take a toll on you, both physically and emotionally”
“Mr. Johnson, please do what you have to do, and whenever you need me here or on curt, let me know. Even if you tell me it’ll take ten years to get that divorce, I’ll get it and nothing will stop me”
"Very well then. I'll proceed with the admission to the curt first thing in the morning and we'll then take it from there."
"Thank you, Mr. Johnson, and don't worry about your payment."
"Mrs. Miller please don't offend me like that, you know I'll take your case even without payment, you know that, don't you?
Smiling Katherine gave a small nod, knowing the elder man meant what he said and she was grateful for it as well. "Thank you, I know and I'm really grateful." The playful smile slowly took over her lips before she continued; "And please by now you should call me Mrs. Miller, after all, I'm here to get rid of that name, right?"
A grin spread the elder man's face in two at the first sign on the female's face before he agreed "Very well, Katherine, no more Mrs. Miller"
Katherine got up and instead of the formal handshake, she opted for a friendly hug for the man who had been a fixture in her life since her childhood, and not to mention when she needed him most after the death of her parents.
Walking out of lawyer's office, Katherine looked up and felt the sun rays being sipped into her face and once again a smile drew itself into her face, as she turned the page into a new chapter in her life, a chapter without Drake and the years she spent with him. A chapter that hopefully would be better and brighter.
