Alice felt her heart stop for a minute as she heard the news. She rushed down to her father’s study, and her greatest fear came to pass: her father’s lifeless body lay on the ground.
She felt her heart being ripped out of her ribcage. Even though her sister got most of the attention, her father loved her deeply. She knew he always had her best interests at heart.
She saw her sister and her mother wailing beside his lifeless body. “Wake up, Adam, please! I need you,” her mother cried while shaking him profusely, hoping he would wake up.
“Mom….” She sobbed as her mother ran to her, enveloping her with a warm hug“ I vow to kill the rogue that killed my father, I promise,” she said to herself.
Consumed by anger, Alice stormed out of his study and ran out of the packhouse, but she didn’t stop there. She kept running until she was out of breath. She just wanted to run away from everything and everyone.
The combination of the heartbreak she felt from the betrayal, the rejection, and the death of her father left a pain she couldn’t bear to explain.
She kept running even when she felt her lungs were being crushed by the lack of air and could collapse. The pain she felt deep within her kept her going.
She finally stopped when she stood at the boundary of the moonclaw pack, away from anyone who knew her. The tears she had held back kept trickling down her cheek, and she couldn’t hold her sobs. She cried out loudly, clutching her chest.
Even when she wanted to stop, she couldn’t. The tears kept rolling down her neck, staining her shirt. Her heart was filled with pain as the image of Lucas with her sister clouded her mind.
Alice was always sensitive to sound and smell, but she was too distracted to notice the group of wolf hunters that surrounded her. Until she sniffed in, she perceived the smell of wolfbane.
Wolfbane is a very powerful substance that is poisonous to werewolves. Even though Alice was born wolfless, she was still a werewolf, and wolfbane had an effect on her.
One of the hunters rushed towards her, and she dodged and kicked him hard on the knee, causing him to withdraw backwards while whimpering in pain.
The next hunter lunged towards her, but Alice was fast enough to stump him from behind with her elbow. A knife was thrown at her, and although she was able to dodge it, it still grazed her skin, causing the poison to slowly sink into her.
She began feeling lightheaded, her eyes slowly shutting down. She felt like her lungs were on fire. A hunter, using that moment of weakness, held her tightly while choking her neck. He held her feet, slowly injecting the syringe into her arm to poison her.
But just in time, there was a loud roar, which echoed so hard that it felt like an earthquake. The hunters let go of her unconscious body, trembling in fear. “Did you hear that?” One of the hunters asked.
Immediately, a big wolf with golden brown fur and golden eyes that shone bright in the dark stormed out, his eyes piercing deeply at them. Another roar came; this time it was so loud that the ground shook.
“Its him!” They all shivered at the sight of him. “Run! Run as far as you can!” One of them announced before running away, and the others ran as fast as they could.
The wolf charged towards them and shredded them to pieces with both hands. The wolf shifted back to his human form and scurried away to get his clothes before he came back to where Alice was lying unconsciously.
He took a good look at her, and his heartbeat became erratic. He felt drawn to her, like he had known her his whole life. He couldn’t help but wonder if she was his mate.
He scurried towards his pack house, which was just a few miles away from where he had met Alice. Right outside his gate stood a feminine figure whom he recognised.
“Raven, what the hell are you doing out here? I instructed everyone to retire and take a rest." They had just returned from a battle at a nearby pack when he felt like something or someone was calling for him out in the woods.
“You weren’t back, so I began to get worried. By the way, who is she?” Her deep brown eyes studied the woman in his eyes, and she gave a tight-lipped smile.
“None of your business,” he replied sharply, walking inside the pack house.
“I’m a member of this pack, Alpha Lucien, and at least I should know who you are bringing in here; what if she was dangerous?”
“She isn’t a dangerous raven. I found her in the woods, and she was attacked by hunters,” he said, striding inside the pack house into his room. He carefully laid Alice on the bed, placing the back of his palm on her forehead. He noticed Alice was burning up.
“What were you doing in the woods this late?” She asked already, feeling annoyed.
“She called out to me! Please, Raven, now isn’t the time for the questions,” Lucien said out loud, feeling annoyed by her interrogation.
“What?” Raven furrowed her brows.
“I think she is my mate,” he replied.
Raven opened her mouth slightly and closed it back, trying to conceal her emotions. “You can’t be so sure; she is unconscious,” she interjected.
“Enough of the interrogation, and give her the damn antidote! Also, get Lucy to come tend to her wounds." Lucien said it in a cold, stern voice.
"Yes, alpha,” she curtly bowed her head and departed from his room, arriving back a few minutes later with a syringe and a tiny bottle containing the antidote. She withdrew from the bottle, using the syringe, and injected it into Alice’s arm.
“Her temperature will come back to normal, but she will be unconscious for some hours,” Raven informed him.
Lucy came in minutes later with a first-aid box. Lucy is the pack physician, who is in her early forties. She is physically small, and her short, curly hair was said to enhance her beauty more.
“I’m sorry, Alpha; you can’t be here while I undress her. I promise to take good care of her." He could see the reassurance in her eyes; his eyes swept over to Raven, who gave him a reassuring nod, and she stepped out of the room.
Raven carefully closed the door, and Lucy began cleaning the wounds on her thighs. “What am I going to do?” Raven asked Lucy while helping her clean the deep cut on Alice’s thigh.
“What are you talking about?”
“You know very well what I’m talking about. He says she is his mate.”
“Nothing is certain yet, though. But I think it's time for you to accept reality." Lucy said.
“I can’t! Alpha Lucien is my reality.”
“You are still young, and you will definitely meet your mate soon. What will you do when you meet him?”
“I will reject him, and when the moon goddess sees how persistent I am with Alpha Lucien, she will make him my second chance mate.”
Lucu drifted her eyes away from Alice to stare at Raven, and she let out a long sigh. “Stop being delusional; Alpha Lucien can’t be yours.”
“He is mine and mine alone. Perhaps if his mate dies here on this bed, he will finally look at me with longing.”
