I am the Chief Energy Engineer of Shelter 7, and the wife of Commander Julian. I designed the shelter's energy network and kept it running through the endless winter. Then Julian brought home a botanist named Chloe and started treating every rule as optional when she asked. Tonight, a Frost Stalker horde closes in on our walls. The outer defense grid should be burning at full power. Instead, Julian has diverted it to the greenhouse to make an aurora for Chloe's birthday. Five hundred people are trapped underground with a commander who has already chosen one woman over them. I learned that lesson once before. This time, I wake up before the killing starts.

Chapter 1 The Rerouted Power
The emergency alarm yanked me awake. I knew the pitch, the red light washing over my room, and the second that would appear on the clock. I was reborn. The monitor beside my bed showed one red system line: *External High-Voltage Grid: Power Rerouted. Priority: Greenhouse Aurora Project.* I had designed the greenhouse to keep vegetables growing through the endless winter. Julian had turned it into Chloe's private birthday sky. Every lamp in that greenhouse drew from a network built to feed the defense grid first. I had written that priority into the earliest plans for Shelter 7. Last time, I had wasted the first few minutes screaming and begging. I still remembered the looks people gave me while the west wall came apart. My hand was steady when I opened the emergency channel. "Julian, this is a Class-Four alert. Frost Stalker horde approaching the west wall. You've rerouted power from the primary defense grid. Restore it. Now." Static answered first. Then Chloe laughed in the background, right there on the command channel Julian used to reserve for me. "Elara, Chloe has been looking forward to this all week. Don't ruin her birthday with your dramatics. The sensors are probably picking up ice fall. Stand down." "It's not ice fall. I'm reading hundreds of heat signatures." "And I'm telling you, you're overreacting. Is this about Chloe again? I thought we were past your jealousy." His chair creaked over the channel. "I'm the commander here. The order is to stand down." The line went dead. Hundreds of heat signatures were crossing the west approach, and my husband had hung up on me. The shelter held five hundred people. Most were asleep behind walls they believed Julian would defend. In my last life, I had run to the perimeter and tried to reactivate the defenses by hand. I fought until my bones broke and my blood froze. Julian spent those final minutes calling me a hysterical wife. Not this time. I crossed the cold floor, pulled on my uniform, and headed for the central energy spire. The armory doors passed on my right. I kept walking. My palm print opened the spire. Conduits hummed behind the walls, carrying power through the system I had designed and built. The master authorization chip sat behind two layers of glass. It controlled every branch of the shelter's power distribution, including the one Julian had stolen. With the chip installed, he could keep moving power wherever he pleased. Once I removed it, every circuit would fall back to the emergency core and answer only to the vault. I broke the seal and pulled it. The main lights went out. The hum under my feet stopped, and emergency red filled the corridor. I stepped into the command vault. Its meteorite-alloy door could withstand anything Julian had in his armory. The door sealed as Julian burst onto the channel. "Elara! What the hell did you do? The shields are down! The main power is offline! Answer me, damn it!"
