Olivia's POV
"How pitiful..."
"I bet she's crying in the car..."
"What a fragile she-wolf..."
The black SUV drove smoothly out of Auris Pack territory.
People by the roadside were already whispering among themselves impatiently. I supposed they must be talking about the fact that Auris Pack had lost its Luna.
After leaving the Pack, I could no longer hear their mind-link.
I lowered the car window and looked at those malicious people by the roadside with an icy, sharp gaze.
They were startled and quickly scattered.
I rolled the window back up and looked into the rearview mirror.
The woman in the mirror had clean eyeliner, flawless makeup, and not a single tearstain on her face.
"Goodbye, Alpha Kael. I hope the freedom you wanted so badly becomes the thing that strangles you."
The car sped away, throwing everything from the past three years behind us.
I did not know how much time had passed before the scenery outside the window gradually became the one in my memory.
Maya, who had been gloomy all this time, also sensed the distinctive aura of Starveil Pack territory.
The scent of pine trees and wetlands drifted in through the c***k in the window.
Maya stood up again in my consciousness, and the fur on her body slowly relaxed.
"Olivia," she said, finally with a little strength in her voice, "we're home."
I smiled and answered, "Yes, Maya. We're home."
Home, sweet home.
The car passed through the imposing iron gate.
I got out and walked through the familiar double oak doors.
The next second, the scent of Starveil Pack came toward me.
It was gentle, safe, and reassuring.
At last, there was no longer that cold, oppressive smell here.
My mother, Luna Murphy of Starveil Pack, walked toward me.
She did not rush forward to hug me. Instead, she looked at me with a gaze full of relief and expectation.
"My little Liv," she called me affectionately by my nickname.
My father, Alpha Voss, stood beside her.
His face was still stern, but the concern in his eyes could not be hidden.
"Welcome home."
His words were simple, but his voice trembled slightly.
I did not throw myself into their arms and sob as I had imagined I would.
"Dad, Mom."
I gathered my emotions and said seriously, "You were right all along. Alpha Kael may have been the Moon Goddess's arrangement, but he truly was not a good mate.
"Unfortunately, I had to experience that pain myself before I understood it."
Dad nodded. "Good. You can learn a lesson from it."
He paused for a moment, then said, "Most importantly, you came home safely."
"Your father and I missed you so much."
Mom came over and finally held me in her arms.
"Oh, my Liv. And Maya. I missed you both so much."
Maya made a comfortable purring sound in Mom's arms.
"I missed you too, Mom."
Mom held me for a long time before finally letting go.
"You must be exhausted after rushing back all this way. We've already had your room prepared."
In the master bathroom, the air was filled with the scent of Damask rose oil.
The huge bathtub had already been filled with water, and fresh rose petals were floating on the surface.
A maid stood to the side, holding a tray with a glass of champagne on it.
"Miss Astor, your hot bath and champagne are ready."
I untied the belt of my robe, but my hand paused for a moment over my flat lower abdomen.
"Wait."
I said, "I'm not taking a bath. And no champagne. Bring me a glass of lemon soda."
"Miss Astor, this is..."
The maid looked puzzled.
Mom happened to push open the bathroom door and walk in.
"Olivia, you haven't bathed yet? What happened?"
I felt the familiar scent on her and spoke softly.
"I'm pregnant."
Seeing her eyes suddenly widen, I added, "Two months. So I can't take a bath right now."
The bathroom fell silent at once, leaving only the sound of running water.
Mom covered her mouth with both hands. It took her a long while to come back to herself.
She looked at my face, then at my stomach, her expression worried.
"Does Alpha Kael know about this?"
"He doesn't."
I gave a cold laugh.
"And he will never know."
"This is my pup. It will bear the Astor surname. It will not become the heir of Auris Pack."
I gently pressed my hand towards my lower abdomen.
Maya also sensed the new life.
She curled even lower in my consciousness, using her own body to surround that faint little presence, like a mother wolf protecting her pup.
This also meant one thing.
Before the pup was born, I could not shift again.
Shifting would hurt it.
Maya knew that as well, so she became even more restrained than usual.
It was not because of weakness.
It was because she was protecting our pup.
Murphy's gaze slowly became firm.
She nodded, her voice carrying true conviction.
"The Moon Goddess never mistreats those who honor their vows, nor does she spare those who break them."
"This is not a curse. This is law."
After a simple wash, Mom and I went to find Dad.
When Dad learned that I was pregnant, he was shocked at first.
But soon, he also stood firmly on my side.
"I respect your choice."
He said, "Astor will provide this child with every form of protection."
Before I could feel moved, the butler suddenly walked in, looking somewhat flustered.
"Alpha Voss. Luna Murphy."
After seeing me, he lowered his head again.
"Miss Astor."
Dad asked, "What happened?"
The butler answered carefully, "Mrs. Sara Foster's convoy is waiting at the main gate. They insist on seeing Miss Astor."
"They said..."
The butler cautiously glanced at my expression.
"They said they came to take their Luna back."
Mom's expression instantly turned furious.
I could even see her fingers turning into wolf claws. Her wolf was almost surfacing.
Before she could speak, I had already stood up.
"Tell the guards to close the gate."
There was unquestionable authority in my command.
The butler lowered his head. "Yes."
I walked to the window and looked at the convoy by the gate.
"Tell them to leave within five minutes.
"Entering another Pack's territory without permission is trespassing.
"If they still haven't withdrawn within five minutes, I will have Starveil's warriors drive them beyond the territory border.
"Crossing the border without invitation is considered a provocation and a declaration of war under werewolf law."
I looked at the wolves of Auris Pack getting out of their cars and continued.
"And tell them this.
"There is no Luna Olivia here.
"There is only Olivia Astor of Starveil Pack."
Affected by my momentum, Maya also took an attacking stance in my mind.
She bared her fangs, already eager to strike.
Mom said approvingly behind me, "Go. Do as she says."
"Yes, Luna Murphy."
The butler turned and left.
I stood by the window and watched outside.
After a few minutes of honking, Auris Pack's convoy finally gave up and could only turn around and leave.
The heavy stone in my heart finally dropped.
Maya also stopped being restless.
I turned to look at my parents. "I need to take a short nap. Maya and I are both exhausted. Wake me at dinner."
I had thought I would be trapped in painful memories, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.
But during this sleep, I slept very peacefully.
When I opened my eyes, the sky outside the window was already filled with a brilliant purplish-red sunset.
My gaze was drawn to something on the clothes rack.
It was a water-blue one-shoulder satin gown.
After I changed into the gown, the smooth satin fell diagonally over one shoulder, revealing the slender lines of my shoulders and neck.
The clean tailoring at the waist and abdomen outlined my curvy figure.
The woman in the mirror had a head of voluminous, molten-gold curls.
The curls fell casually over her shoulders. Her features were striking and vivid, and her entire presence carried an elegant aura.
Maya exclaimed in my mind, "Olivia, you're so beautiful."
"Yes, Maya."
I looked at myself in the mirror.
"We've finally found our confidence again."
After getting ready, I went downstairs to the living room.
"Bang!"
Streamers and colorful confetti burst into the air and landed on my hair and shoulders.
"Surprise!"
My cousin Chloe Astor jumped out from the side, still holding a small party popper in her hand.
Happy 'Dump the Toxic Mate' Day!
A group of familiar werewolf relatives raised their glasses.
Dad and Mom were also standing among them, smiling at me.
"Chloe!"
My aunt, Caroline Astor, looked at her daughter reproachfully.
"You scared Olivia."
Chloe stuck out her tongue like a mischievous little wolf pup.
"My strong cousin Olivia would never be scared. She's stronger than everyone here.
"Let's toast to the queen!"
She was the first to raise the champagne in her hand.
The others also raised their glasses in tribute.
This time, I truly smiled.
I picked up a glass of lemon juice and walked to Dad's side.
"How are things on Auris Pack's end?"
Dad smiled like a victor.
"They didn't come back to bother us. They all ran away with their tails between their legs."
I nodded.
That result was very satisfying.
"Dad."
I said, "I want to return to my seat on the Pack Council.
"I have some new ideas I want to propose regarding the alliances and resource exchanges between Starveil Pack and several powerful packs in the north.
"I want you to know that even though I'm carrying a pup, I will never become idle because of it.
"I won't just stay at home knitting baby socks for the child."
Dad's expression relaxed, showing no displeasure at all.
He set down his champagne glass, the corner of his lips curving into a smile.
He looked at me, ambition and recognition in his eyes.
"Good.
"I've already had your workroom prepared. The relevant documents are all on the desk as well. You can start working whenever you want.
"Our Alpha Heir is back!"
Chloe raised her glass again and shouted loudly, "Cheers! May that blind and heartless Alpha Kael pay for every foolish choice he has made! May the Goddess let him taste unbearable regret soon!"
"Cheers!"
Everyone cheered in unison.
Kael's POV
When I returned to that house again, night had already fallen.
The car stopped in front of the gate.
I helped Meg out of the passenger seat and walked with her toward the front door.
But I still unconsciously raised my head and glanced at the second floor.
The master bedroom window was dark.
It was so black it looked like a hole that could swallow a person whole.
For the past three years, no matter when I came home, that window had always shone with warm yellow light.
Leonardo had even treated that window as the moon.
Every time we arrived home, it would howl a few times toward that window.
I knew it was actually calling for its mate.
But tonight, there was only cold moonlight on the window.
The entire villa had sunk into a suffocating silence.
That fresh and pleasant scent of blackcurrants was gone as well.
She had really left.
My footsteps stopped.
A dull pain drilled out from deep in my chest, slowly grinding against that fresh hollow.
"Kael, what's wrong?"
Meg gently stroked my arm and asked softly.
I steadied myself and moved my gaze away from that window.
"Nothing. Let's go in."
