Chapter 5

Olivia's POV I turned around and immediately saw a dazzling figure waving hard at me. He was leaning beside a sleek sports car, tall and upright, with an unrestrained aura. He carried the distinctive scent of a werewolf, completely different from an ordinary human elite. "Liv!" He called out to me and quickly ran toward me. The sunlight was a little glaring, and I narrowed my eyes slightly. "Julian?" Julian Brooks's Pack bordered Starveil Pack territory. In the past, the two Packs had interacted frequently. Julian and I had met at the werewolf school jointly run by our two Packs. Back then, we were practically glued to each other every summer. At that time, he had still been very thin, just a little wolf pup who liked following behind me. But now, he had completely changed. He was tall and well-built, his shoulders broad and strong, wearing a suit that might have cost more than the sports car behind him. He stopped in front of me and smiled. "Liv, you still remember me." I looked into his eyes. They were a clear green, reminding me of the forest in my family's backyard when I was a child. "What are you doing here?" I crossed my arms in front of my chest and asked. "I heard you're going to rebuild Starveil Pack's power." He put away his joking tone. "I came because I want to stand on your side." I raised an eyebrow suspiciously. "I remember your Pack assigns jobs to its members. Why are you running outside to look for work? That's too boring, isn't it?" Julian let out a low laugh. "I want to do something I truly want to do." "Oh? And what is that?" Julian took a step closer, and the joking look on his face disappeared as well. "I heard about you and Kael." I was somewhat surprised. "As soon as I heard the news, I came to find you, Liv." Julian said, "I know how Kael neglected you all these years. And I know he used the names of Astor and Starveil Pack to obtain quite a lot of benefits. I know you must want to change this situation. I came because you are in a difficult position right now. You need someone whose background you know, someone who is not controlled by Kael, and someone who can help you revitalize the Pack." I quietly studied him. The little wolf pup who had once followed behind me had long since grown into a male wolf with a powerful presence. He was steady, clear-headed, and there was ambition in his eyes that did not fear conflict. I did not need anyone's sympathy. But right now, I truly did urgently need a reliable partner. A capable helper who could fight beside me and help me stabilize the Pack's situation. "Do you sincerely want to work for me and for Astor?" I confirmed in a low voice. "Without question." Julian answered cleanly. I added, "I know your abilities far exceed ordinary wolves. But the stronger the ability, the greater the responsibility and the price that comes with it. Don't think I'll go easy on you just because we know each other." Julian froze for a moment, then laughed. "I never wanted special treatment. What I want is a fair and real contest and game." "Good." I turned and walked forward, my tone decisive. "Although you originally did not belong to Starveil Pack, from now on, you are a member of Starveil Pack. Keep up." As we walked toward the main building, a male wolf in a gray suit blocked my way. He was holding a folder. Maya told me he was a Beta. "Miss Astor." He was respectful and lowered his head slightly. "I am Finn Reed, Beta of Starveil Pack. When the Alpha is absent, the Beta is responsible for managing Pack affairs, coordinating warrior patrols, and handling territory matters and alliance issues. According to Alpha Voss's arrangement, before you personally choose a new Beta, I will continue to hold this position." Every Alpha could choose their own Beta. They could also choose to continue using the previous Alpha's Beta. At present, I did not have a more suitable candidate yet. "Good." I nodded. "Now we'll go to the council chamber. Report the recent Pack situation to me." The three of us walked up the stone steps to the second floor of the main building. I glanced at Julian beside me, who had just joined us. If he was willing to formally swear allegiance to Starveil Pack, perhaps... Sitting in the position where Dad used to preside over affairs, I looked at the dense stack of documents before me and the dazzling data on the computer. I spoke calmly, "You may begin your report." Finn was indeed someone Dad had personally chosen. He was very organized in his work and quickly presented the Pack data, territory tribute records, and the ratio of subordinate forces to me one by one. This way, I could quickly familiarize myself with the current situation. I carefully reviewed everything. I wanted to thoroughly investigate exactly how Auris Pack had, step by step, eaten away at our territorial resources during the years I had been away from Starveil Pack. Every benefit that had been seized, every opening that had been exploited, I had to find out clearly and record it. Then I would take it all back, not a penny less, not a single account missed. "Anything else?" I raised my eyes and looked at Finn. He looked somewhat nervous, but he still continued his report seriously. He mentioned the details of the supply passage alliance between the Packs. Over the years, Kael had used my name to request extremely low cooperation prices from Astor. As a result, Astor's supplies and resource reserves had flowed continuously into Auris Pack and its related forces. We had given them the largest exclusive discount and the best material allocation rights. All these years, Astor had been conceding profits, almost using its own Pack resources to support the other side. But what we received in return was only continuous losses and resource outflow. "Astor's foundation remains stable, and the Pack's resources are still developing steadily. There is no deficit." Finn handed me a stack of tables. "It is just that for many years, we have conceded too much profit to external partners, causing overall earnings to be greatly compressed. These are the complete details of the territorial branches, supply provisions, and alliance terms with each Pack." Julian, who was standing aside, could not help cursing, "I knew Foster was no good." I looked at the data columns and resource allocation charts in front of me. Although I had not personally handled these matters for years, I did not feel unfamiliar with them at all. They were like weapons I had set aside for a long time. Even if they were covered in dust, their edge was still there. The intercom alert suddenly interrupted my thoughts. "Miss Astor." The receptionist's voice sounded somewhat nervous. "Mr. Ethan from Zephyr Pack wishes to see you." Julian looked a little surprised. "Ethan? Ethan Sullivan?" "Yes." I had long heard of that name. Ethan Sullivan. He was the most reckless and dissolute wolf I knew. It was said that he had been involved with every unmarked adult she-wolf in his Pack. But I knew this wolf was definitely not as superficial as he seemed. Otherwise, he would not have become Kael's most important friend. Nor would he have indulged Kael's ambition all these years and helped him cover up those schemes. "He said he came regarding the old supply exchange alliance between Zephyr Pack and Starveil Pack." The receptionist added. "Let him come up." A moment later, Ethan pushed open the door of the council chamber. He did indeed have a face that could drive she-wolves wild. His black hair was neat and refined, his brows and eyes sharply defined, and his features were so distinct they looked as if they had been carefully carved. His tailored suit fit his strong, tight physique. Broad shoulders, narrow waist, clean lines, and full of strength. But in his eyes, there was always a lingering arrogance and conceit. A sweet, restless scent of peach wine surrounded him. Maya told me she felt like she was about to get drunk. "Long time no see, Luna Olivia..." He curved his lips into a familiar and false smile. I coldly cut him off. "It's Miss Astor." His smile faded slightly. "My apologies, Miss Astor. "If you refuse to respect even the most basic form of address, Ethan, then I find it hard to believe we can continue this discussion." A few traces of embarrassment appeared on Ethan's face. He walked to the desk and pushed a blue folder in front of me. "It's just a routine renewal. The exchange alliance between Zephyr Pack and the Astor family is about to expire. I brought the documents. The terms are the same as in previous years. You can just sign them." I opened the document and quickly scanned the detailed terms inside. The more I read, the colder my heart became. "The supply pricing you proposed is a full twenty percent lower than the standard alliance rate in the werewolf world." I raised my hand and closed the document. "I will not renew this alliance." I looked straight at him. "If you still want to continue cooperating, then follow the trading rules between Packs and trade with us at the standard rate." "The standard rate?" Ethan widened his eyes, his face full of disbelief. "Liv, are you insane? We've cooperated with the Astor family for so many years, and everything has always developed well. Why change it so suddenly now?" "The market never remains unchanged." I said lightly, "For so many years, the Astor family has been supplying you at prices far below market value, while also providing you with exclusive material allocation rights. We have been silently conceding profits. From now on, all cooperation and supply provisions will return to the standard alliance rate. If you want to continue cooperating, then compete for the alliance with your own strength, just like every other Pack." Ethan's expression clearly panicked. His tone carried a degree of pressure, as well as unwillingness. "We've been cooperating for so long. Why ruin the relationship now?" He took a step forward and leaned in, trying to suppress me with his own aura. I did not retreat at all. I also leaned forward slightly, actively meeting his aura head-on. Maya had already stood up. Through my pupils, she stared straight into Ethan's eyes. She released a threatening growl and a powerful aura. Until Ethan could no longer withstand the pressure and instinctively took a step back. "Our one-sided concessions are not mutual benefit, and they are certainly not cooperation." I said coldly, "Ethan, come back to me after you have thought this through. Now, get out." Ethan's eyes widened with anger, and he was about to argue. Julian, who had been standing quietly in the corner, stepped out. He walked to the door and opened it. "You heard her." Julian's voice was cold and merciless. "Don't make me call the guards." Ethan's dignity and politeness shattered completely. He suddenly raised his hand and slammed it heavily on my council table. "You are being outrageously reckless!" His face flushed with anger, and his wolf almost surfaced. "You don't understand Pack balance at all, and you don't understand cooperative relationships!" I casually lowered my head and glanced at the clock on the wall. As for his hysteria, I found it only irritating. "I truly don't know how many messes Kael cleaned up for you in the past." Ethan roared in frustration. "Back then, Kael almost died in that car accident! You owe him! You know nothing about Pack power games. Starveil Pack will be destroyed in your hands sooner or later!"
