“You need a night out. No excuses”
Rayna stared at her best friend, arms folded across her chest like a human shield. “Aurora, I just got out of a four-year relationship. Four. Years. I’m not in the mood to go clubbing.” Aurora rolled her eyes dramatically and plopped onto the edge of the bed. “Which is exactly why we’re going. You’ve spent the last week crying into your cereal and rewatching reruns of ‘New Girl’. Jared doesn’t deserve even a second more of your time.” “I’m not crying into my cereal—” “You are. Or at least, you were this morning.” Aurora arched a brow. “Rayna, you’re smart, gorgeous, and finally free. He cheated. End of story. Now, it’s your turn to bounce back.” Rayna sighed, torn between her comfort zone and Aurora’s unwavering enthusiasm. “Okay… maybe one drink. No dancing. No flirting. No hookups.” Aurora clapped like a seal. “Yes! That’s a start! Don’t worry, I’ve got you. Tonight, you’re letting loose.” Thirty-five minutes later, Rayna stood in front of her mirror, tugging at the edges of a sleek, black mini-dress that clung to her in all the places it probably shouldn’t. Her soft hazel eyes stared back at her with doubt. “I look like I’m trying too hard.” Aurora leaned in from behind, adjusting Rayna’s loose curls. “No. You look like someone who finally remembered she’s a catch. Seriously, if Jared saw you now, he’d cry into his cereal.” Rayna cracked a reluctant smile. “You’re ridiculous.” “And you love me.” “Unfortunately.” __ The club was electric, all flashing lights and pulsing beats that vibrated through Rayna’s ribcage. She stepped inside and instantly felt like a fish out of water. The air was thick with perfume, cologne, and the scent of expensive liquor. Aurora walked with the confidence of someone who belonged, expertly weaving through the crowd with Rayna in tow. “This place is packed,” Rayna muttered. “That’s the point. Chaos is healing.” “I’m pretty sure that’s not how therapy works.” Aurora winked. “It’s how my therapy works.” They reached the bar, where Aurora squeezed behind the counter to chat with the other staff. Rayna perched on a stool, fingers wrapped around the stem of a glass of wine. Her eyes scanned the room idly, trying not to think about Jared’s betrayal, but it was like trying to ignore a splinter in her chest. She looked up—and saw him. The crowd parted, and there he was: tall, sleek, and magnetic. His suit was midnight gray, fitted like it had been tailored specifically to emphasize the breadth of his shoulders and the slim taper of his waist. His black hair was tousled in that “I-don’t-try-but-still-look-perfect” kind of way, and those eyes—icy blue and piercing—were locked right on her. Rayna quickly looked away. No. Not tonight. She didn’t want attention, especially not from someone who had women lining up for his time. But when she dared a second glance, he was still watching her—this time, with the ghost of a smirk playing at the corner of his lips. And then he raised his hand. A signal. A waiter approached Rayna moments later. “Compliments of the gentleman,” he said, placing a crimson-hued cocktail in front of her. Rayna looked down at it, then back up at the man, now standing just behind the velvet rope of the VIP section. Her expression hardened. “Tell the gentleman,” she said, lifting her chin, “I’m not interested.” The waiter blinked, thrown off. “Are you sure? That’s Jayden Smi—” “I don’t care who he is.” She stood, smoothing her dress. “No means no.” And with that, she turned on her heel and walked away, heels clicking across the floor with deliberate finality. In the ladies’ room, Rayna exhaled deeply, gripping the sink. Her reflection stared back at her—flush-cheeked, adrenaline-spiked, and suddenly very aware of the flutter in her chest. What the hell was that? She hadn’t expected the man to be… well, that. Something was unnerving about the way he looked at her. Like he saw through the makeup and heartbreak and uncertainty and was curious about what lay underneath. She splashed cold water on her face and took a deep breath. “No distractions,” she reminded herself in the mirror. “You’re starting your internship in three days. Focus.” Meanwhile, across the club, Jayden Smith watched her leave with a mix of surprise and something else—interest. He wasn’t used to rejection. Especially not at first glance. Women usually threw themselves at him, lured by his wealth, status, or simply the chance to be seen with him. But she hadn’t even blinked. “Bold,” he muttered under his breath. His friend, Luca Malakai, appeared beside him with two glasses of whiskey. “What’s got your attention tonight?” Jayden’s gaze stayed fixed on the spot where Rayna had disappeared. “That girl.” Luca followed his line of sight, but Rayna was gone. “The one who just turned down your drink?” Jayden nodded, lips curling into a smile. “She doesn’t know who I am.” “Maybe that’s a good thing.” “Maybe.” Jayden sipped his whiskey, a flicker of amusement in his eyes. “Or maybe it makes things more interesting.” Rayna returned to her stool, where Aurora reappeared with a round of shots and her usual bright grin. “Okay, I gave you a whole fifteen minutes of mope time. Now we drink.” Rayna chuckled, taking a shot and shaking off the lingering tension. “You were right. I needed this.” Aurora held up her glass. “To forget assholes and remember who the hell you are.” They clinked glasses. By the time Rayna got home that night, she felt lighter. Not fixed—but at least not broken. She slipped off her heels, crawled into bed, and fell asleep without checking her phone for texts from Jared. Progress. __ Three Days Later Rayna stood in the lobby of Smith’s Organization, the massive glass-paneled building gleaming like it had been carved out of ambition itself. Her stomach twisted with nerves. “First day,” she whispered to herself, clutching her folder of onboarding documents. “You’ve got this.” She followed the receptionist’s directions to the elevator, took it to the 28th floor, and joined the other interns being briefed on the day’s agenda. “And finally,” said the coordinator, “you’ll get to meet the CEO this afternoon. He’s requested a quick introduction to this year’s intern team. Don’t be nervous—he’s very professional.” Rayna nodded along, barely paying attention, until the doors at the end of the conference room opened. A hush fell over the room. Rayna turned. And there he was. Jayden Smith. The man from the club. The man she’d turned down. And now… her boss. Jayden’s icy blue eyes scanned the room, then landed on her—and for a single heartbeat, they both froze. He smiled. Not the polite kind. The kind that said: I remember you.
