I woke up the next morning feeling sick to my stomach. My parents must be worried sick about me. I tried to look on the bright side of all of this, but there was none. Julian is watching me like a hawk. He took away my cell phone and car keys. I have a closet full of clothes that he took from my bedroom. He doesn’t even sleep and that’s not normal and yet he is not a human. He just looks like one. He sits on a couch next to my bed and watches me when I sleep.
I sit upright and wait for him to say something. He sits straight up and clears his throat.
‘Good morning. How did you sleep?’ he tried to touch me, but I pulled away before our skins could touch. ‘Fine I guess.’
‘How are you feeling today?’
‘Other than the fact that I’m being held against my will, I’m super.’ I try to let it sound gentler, but it comes out harsh. I hope it stings a little. After his actions yesterday I don’t care who he is or how I feel about him. He has gone way too far this time. ‘I’m sorry for what I’m doing, but it really is for the best.’
‘It’s the best for whom, for you or for me?’
He looks down and he doesn’t answer my question so it must be for him. I sigh and climb out of the bed and head to the bathroom. He follows me and I stop in front of the door. ‘You are not coming with me.’
He hesitated, but then he nods and walks away.
I take a long and soothing shower. I try to rub all the bad memories away with the sponge in my hand.
I dry my hair in the bathroom and put on some lip-gloss before heading to my bedroom. I open my closet and decide to wear a white strapless sundress with my red pumps. I look in the mirror and I hardly recognize the girl staring back at me. I tied my hair into a ponytail and head to the kitchen.
Julian has already made me breakfast and he is waiting for me in the dining room. He made waffles with cream and strawberries. There are red roses on the table and a candle light is lit in the middle of the table.
When he sees me he rushes to me and bows his head. He asks for my hand and I give it to him.
‘Do you feel better now?’ he asks me and he gives me a kiss on my cheek. I blush and try to hide my face. He takes my face in his hand.
‘Never hide your face again. You are breathtaking' and he gives me a soft kiss on my lips. My heart sings and I have butterflies in my stomach. He knows how to make me vulnerable. I can't deny what I feel when I am around him, but this was not the right choice he made locking me up, just like my parents had done. That nearly cost me my life. I need to think of an escape plan, but for now I will play along.
He leads me to a chair and I sit down. He takes the seat across from me and he watches my every move.
‘I made you breakfast’ he says trying to break the silence. I hold back my anger.
‘Thank you’ was all I managed to say. Breathe Ava
‘What do you want to do today?’ he asks me.
‘How about you tell me everything there is to know about you.’
He sits and considers the proposal. ‘Tell you what; if you promise not to run away I will tell you everything you want to know.’
I considered his proposition and decided that if I escaped I would still have the answers and I would make sure he does't catch me again.
‘Deal’
‘So tell me Ava, what do you wish to know?’
I asked him the first thing that popped into my head. ‘How did you become a guardian angel?’
‘Well that is a long and boring story. Try something simpler.’ With him not wanting to tell me about it made me more curious.
‘I made a deal with you so spill.’ He sighs and sits up straighter. He plays with his hands. ‘It is something that I have always wanted to do.’
‘That’s not a long and boring story that I was promised.’ I folded my arms over my chest and stared him down. He laughed at me and brushed his hand through his hair.
‘Okay you win.’ He took a deep breath and stared at his hands. ‘I was a messenger for angels in heaven. I traveled the world delivering important messages between heaven and earth. I got fascinated with the guardian angels and their assignments. They lived for their assignments on earth. They did everything to keep the humans safe. I wanted a purpose so I asked to be a guardian angel.’
‘How did we meet?’
He looks me in the eyes and he gives me a grin. I blush, but I don’t look away.
‘Now that is a fascinating story. I arrived at the hospital where you were born a few minutes after your birth. You were so small and fragile. I went to see you once. You were kept in the ICU so it was nearly impossible to see you.’
‘But you kept on coming back?’ I asked him.
‘Yes I did. I was there everyday until you were discharged.’
‘Did you follow me home?’
He looks away. ‘Yes’
I try to process all of his answers.
‘How many times did I see you?’ he looks into my eyes as if he is searching for my soul. I try to catch my breath.
‘When you were a baby I was there the whole day. When you started walking I only visited you when you were asleep and when you turned three I disappeared into the shadows, watching you in the background.’
‘Did I ever tell my parents about you?’
‘Yes you did. Your mom thought you had an imaginary friend’ he chuckles.
‘What about my dad?’
‘He knew there was something special about you. He believed you Ava. Once he came into your room when you were asleep and he told me to always look after you and to keep you safe.’
‘Has he ever talked to you again after that?’
‘Yes the day you woke up soaked in your own blood. He blamed me for what happened and I couldn’t agree more with him.’ He bows his head and he covers his face with his hands. I stand up and walk to his side of the table. I kneel next to him and take his hands away. ‘What happened to me was no ones fault Julian.’
‘You have no idea what is going on do you?’ I stare at him bewildered.
He grabs my wrist and he pulls me closer to his face.
‘You are in danger Ava. There are people trying to kill you.’ He whispers. I gasp in shock and pull away. I look at him in outrage.
‘The only thing that is a danger to me is you.’ I run to my new bedroom and lock the door. How dare he tell me that I am in danger when he is the one that has kidnapped me twice?
If he is an angel he is doing a terrible job.
