‘All that matters is that you are alright now. We got you here in time. They got the bleeding to stop. You have to stay here for a few more weeks, but other than that you are going to be just fine.’ My mom gave me a reassuring smile while she brushed my hair with her hand and humming.
‘Why did I need surgery?’
My mom looked confused at my question.
“The back of your head was cut open. The doctors don’t know with what. You needed twenty six stitches. The doctor wanted to shave your hair off and I begged him to try to work around it. They managed to close up your wound without removing your hair. Your wrists were also cut, they had to reconnect your veins. You were in surgery for nearly five hours. Your right wrist is also broken.’
I was shocked. I didn’t know what to say.
I wanted to cry.
I felt violated.
‘How did I survive?’ I asked my mom instead.
‘We don’t know Ava. The doctors said that it was a miracle. You lost a lot of blood. They gave you blood transfusions. We are just so happy that you are safe now.’ That was the first time my dad spoke to me. My dad looked terrible. He looked vulnerable and scared for the first time in years.
I let my head fall to the side and stared out of the window. The sun was shining bright in the sky. I smiled at the rays of sunlight that is smiling at me.
‘How long?’ was all I could ask.
My parents exchanged a look and then my dad nodded.
‘It has been two weeks sweetie. Your brain was swollen from the impact to your brain. The doctors didn’t think you would make it. After a week the swelling went down, but you were still not responding.’
I looked around in the hospital room and saw for the first time all the flowers and cards. I was in a coma for two weeks, because of a blow to my head. This was not good at all.
I sighed and closed my eyes. This was not going to go away easily.
Before I knew it I was drifting off to sleep hoping that the hooded figure would leave me alone.
I woke up to a dark room. It must have been evening. There was a nurse sitting next to my bed.
Great! I had a babysitter. Mom must have gone home quickly. I closed my eyes before she realized that I was awake and let my mind wander off.
I imagined mister Santana sitting next to my bed and telling me that everything was going to be okay.
I smiled at that image. He made me relax so easily. I forgot about all my troubles and worries when I was around him.
I was pulled back by reality when I heard someone entering the room. I was scared and I waited for that familiar voice to call to me and threaten me, but it never did. Instead I felt a hand holding onto my hand. It felt wonderful!
It was like a flame that shot through my hand and up my arm. It warmed up my body and I sighed. I was relieved to know that someone was still watching over me. I have never experienced anything like this. I felt love and affection through that touch. I wanted to open my eyes and stare into the eyes of this person that is lighting my insides on fire.
Before I opened my eyes the person started talking to me. It sounded like a man and he didn’t know that I was awake. Even the sound of his voice sent a jolt through my body. He was actually making me nervous.
‘I am sorry this happened to you angel. I couldn’t save you. I tried everything to get to you, but it was useless. I could only stand by and pray that you would survive. I promise that they will never harm you again. I will make sure of that.’
What was he talking about? Who were they? It didn’t make any sense.
‘I know it was risky coming here to see you, but I just had to make sure that you were alright.’
I felt a tear fall on my hand and then he kissed my hand so softly.
‘Be safe Ava. I will never let you out of my sight again. I will keep you safe.’ It sounded like a promise.
He let go of my hand and walked away. I opened my eyes to see him walking away. I couldn’t make out any features. I only noticed the big, white, feathery wings that were connected to his back. I shot upright and regretted it immediately. My head was killing me. I let out a moan and the nurse was up next to me in seconds.
‘Are you alright dear?’ Can I get you anything?’ she studied my face with a concerned look on her face.
‘I’m fine thanks.’ I touched the back of my head and winced. The nurse noticed it immediately.
‘On a scale of one to ten how bad is the pain dear?’
I could tell her that my pain was an eight, but then they would give me morphine to sleep. I didn’t want to sleep. I wanted to wait and see if the winged man would come back. I wanted to see his face. He sounded so familiar. It was so frustrating not to know where I know him from. I decided to lie to the nurse. It was the only way to make sure that I stayed awake.
‘It is a four nurse. I’m fine really. I just forgot for a moment where I was that's all.’
It didn’t look like she believed me. She walked out of the room to go and fetch something. I must be a really bad liar if a nurse doesn’t even believe me. No wonder my parents started conspiring about my behavior behind my back.
My mom came into the room half running towards me. The nurse must have told her that I was awake and lying about my pain level.
‘Hi sweetie, I’m glad you are awake.’ She played with my hair and I smiled at her. She always played with my hair when she was worried about me.
‘I’m fine mom. I’m glad your back.” I pulled her down and gave her a hug. My head was starting to clear and the pain was floating away.
‘The nurse is worried sweetie. She says you’re in a lot of pain, but they can’t give you any pain medication if you don’t tell them that you are in pain.’ My mom touched my face and pleaded with her eyes to ask for medication.
‘I said I was fine mom’ I snapped. I pulled away from her and closed my eyes.
This was going to be a long night.
