The sound of glass shattering and her mother's high pitched scream woke Lena up that hot afternoon.
She had been out with a couple of other girls that had gone to work in the city in order to earn some money. It wasn't so much but at least it helped with the expenses around the house.
She had been so tired when she got back home that she went straight to bed despite the parasites in her stomach gnawing at her stomach walls, asking to be fed.
Now it was nothing compared to the fear that gripped her so hard that her heart thumped loudly against her chest and made it hurt.
Before she could move the blanket and rush downstairs to find out what was going on, her bedroom door swung open and three huge men filled her room.
Her room that had always been small was now suffocating as they stared at her and her stomach dropped. She scurried away, further into her bed and her breathing became ragged but that didn't stop one of the men from stepping forward and reaching out for her.
“Stop! Get away from me!" She thrashed and tossed but nothing loosened the grip that the man had on her as he threw her over his shoulders and walked out of the bed.
As soon as they got to the bottom of the stairs, she saw her mother's favorite vase and that was when she looked up to quickly search for her parents.
They were on the couch and both their eyes filled with fear as they looked up at her and fresh tears streamed down her mother's face as her father stretched out his hand to drape over her shoulder in comfort.
Her eyes moved to the figure that stood in front of them. That was when she felt the real fear.
Standing proudly in her less than comfortable living room was a man in his three piece suit. His height and build were enough to let Lena know that he was behind this. The aura he exuded alone was threatening and Lena couldn't help but wonder who her father had pissed off this time around.
Her father had been in the habit of taking loans, knowing full well that he would not be able to pay back. This hadn't been the first time huge men were barging into her house or breaking things. It had become a part of their monthly routine when the loan sharks came around for their pay.
Except, they had never gone as far as entering her room or doing anything to her.
That was the reason she got the job.
“Take her to the car. Tie her up with the others. " The tall man told the men holding her.
She frowned and sharply turned her head to her parents in confusion.
What was going on?
Why weren't her parents saying anything?
How much did her dad possibly owe the loan sharks that she had to be taken as collateral?
What was going to happen to her?
She was asking to complain, nag, cry. She wanted to but on second thought, realized that she had a debt to pay her parents. She could do this for them at least.
She was dropped in the car with four other girls. They looked equally as frightened as she did and she couldn't help but wonder if they had been taken for the same reasons as well.
The tall man came and sat in front. His eyes met with her for a brief second before he turned away and looked straight ahead. They were green- his eyes, and for that split second that they looked at each other, she felt something. She just didn't know what it was.
The car ride was silent. Actually, she was silent, the only sound escaping from her when her head hit the roof of the car due to the bumpy road.
The red sand and dust picked at her eyes and throat and Lena feared to cough in fear that one of the men would turn to glare at her. After a while, she started to feel fatigue but all that cleared away when the car started slowing down.
The palace was huge.
Huge wasn't even enough to describe it but Lena didn't think she had enough words to describe it. She momentarily forgot about the situation she was in as she took in the beauty and elegance of the place.
It was quite obvious that whoever owned the place was a fan of white since almost everything was that color. She was pushed to join the others after stepping down from the car and being taken into the house through the back exit.
“Alpha, we've been expecting you." A man walked up to the tall man and bowed in front of him.
“Zayne, you're just as incompetent as I thought you'd be. I was south doing your job since you obviously have more important things to do. "
Zayne laughed and raised his hand in surrender and the both of them walked ahead.
They were all taken into a room and lined up in a single file. As she looked around to try to make sense of what was going on, the curtain in front swung open and in front of the stage, the tall man from before sat majestically with his legs spread wide and a very straight look on his face.
With this view, she got a very good look at his face. His sharp jaw outlining his slim face and his blonde hair pushed back so you could see his piercing gaze, fixated on the girl that stepped forward.
She stepped out, looking just as confused as every other person here and by the time we got back to the line, she saw the tall man look at beside him and shake his head.
What the hell was going on?
“Next!"
A couple girls went before her and she saw the Alpha shake his head at Zayne. When it was finally her turn, her stomach churned and she cleaned her palms against her gown.
She had no idea what the hell was going on, but she knew to walk out and walk back to the line. And that was what she did.
All the while, her head faced the floor because she was scared to look up at the Alpha and Zayne.
As she went back to stand on the line, her stomach grumbled and she gripped it as if to silence it, briefly looking up to see if anyone had heard.
And in that moment, for some reason, she looked at the Alpha and saw his nod his head and turn back to look at her.
That was when she knew she was really doomed.
