Chapter One: New Beginnings
The flashing lights cut through Isabella's closed eyelids, waking her up. Confused, she blinked multiple times, attempting to understand her environment. The strong beats of music shook through her body, while the air hung heavy with a sweet and overpowering blend of perfume and smoke. Isabella found it difficult to sit up, feeling dizzy. Glancing at her outfit, she was shocked to see she had on a sleek party dress, peeking out from under a large man's suit jacket. She ran her fingers over the unfamiliar cloth while she attempted to recall how she had arrived. "There you are, you careless little brat!" Isabella's confusion was pierced by a sharp voice. She looked upwards and saw a young woman with her hands on her hips, shooting her a fierce look. "Me? I’m sorry, have we met before?”Isabella's voice was rough, hardly heard amidst the music. The woman's eyes narrowed with a dangerous expression. "Oh, that's rich. Are you pretending to be dumb now? Your family has been worried sick looking for you! We looked for you all night and now you're here, partying as if you don't have any worries!” Isabella winced in pain as she shook her head. "I’m sorry, I truly do not... I can't remember anything. Who are you? Who am I?" "Enough!" The woman's hand connected with Isabella's cheek in a stinging slap. "I've had it with your games, Isabella. Your brother is going to deal with you when we get home." Isabella was shocked, she held her right cheek, the pain stunned her so hard it sobered her up. Before Isabella could process what was happening, the woman grabbed her arm, yanking her to her feet. "Wait, please! I don't understand—" "Save it," the woman hissed, dragging Isabella through the crowded club. "You've embarrassed us enough for one night." Panic rose in Isabella's chest as she stumbled after the angry woman. Her head throbbed, and her legs felt weak. "Please, stop! You're hurting me!" All of a sudden, a powerful voice broke through the disorder. "Sorry, is there a problem here?" Both women changed direction to confront the origin of the disturbance. Isabella gasped in surprise when she saw the man in front of her. He was tall, with wide shoulders, and had perfectly messy dark hair and intense brown eyes. His strong jawline was highlighted by some stubble, and his lips were curved into a worried frown. The woman holding Isabella's arm bristled. "Who the hell are you? This doesn't concern you. I'm taking my sister-in-law home." The man's eyebrows rose. "I'm afraid there's been a misunderstanding. Isabella has been with me all night." "And who exactly are you?" the woman demanded. "Alexander," he replied smoothly. "I'm sure your husband knows who I am and I’m sure you know my last name. Fiona was stunned by the coincidence, "Lies, that would mean you are…," she stopped herself as she watched how she talked to the strange man, there was only one prominent Alexander in this city and he was standing in front of her. "I am Fiona, Isabella's older brother's wife. And I don't believe a word you're saying." Alexander's expression hardened. "I assure you, it's the truth. Isabella had a bit too much to drink earlier, and I've been looking after her. I'd be happy to drive her home myself." Fiona's grip on Isabella's arm tightened. "Absolutely not. I don't think that proper, and I'm not about to let you—" "It's okay," Isabella interjected, her voice small but firm. "I... I trust him." Fiona's eyes widened in disbelief. "Are you insane? Do even realize who this man is?" "I don't know you either?" Isabella countered, finding a spark of defiance. "Because right now, you both feel like strangers to me." A tense silence fell between them, broken only by the pounding music. Finally, Fiona released Isabella's arm with a huff. "Fine. But don't think this is over, Isabella. Your brother will hear about this." As Fiona stormed off, Isabella sagged with relief. Alexander placed a steadying hand on her lower back. "Are you alright?" Isabella nodded weakly. "I think so. Thank you for stepping in. I... I don't know what's going on." Alexander's brow furrowed with concern. "Let's get you out of here. We can talk in the car." As they made their way through the club, Isabella couldn't help but steal glances at her mysterious savior. His strong profile, the way his shirt clung to his muscular frame, the gentle but firm way he guided her through the crowd – it all sent a flutter through her stomach despite her confusion. Once they were settled in Alexander's sleek sports car, Isabella turned to face him. "I can't thank you enough for helping me back there. I'm so confused... I can't remember anything. Not even my own last name." Alexander's laugh was rich and warm. "Come on, Miss Isabella. The joke's over. I know you were pretty out of it last night, but surely you remember me?" Isabella felt her heart drop. “I'm being serious. I found myself in that club without any memory of how I got there or who I am. I don’t even know where I live.” The joy disappeared from Alexander's expression, replaced by true worry. “Are you serious? I’m sorry, Bella. I thought you were joking.” "It's fine," Isabella said in a gentle tone. "Could you... could you tell me what happened yesterday evening?" Alexander ran his hand through his hair, displaying discomfort. "I was at the club hanging out with friends." You were also present, and you were... extremely friendly, let's just say. We danced, had conversations, and then you began drinking heavily. I was concerned for your well-being, so I closely monitored you. In the end, you blacked out, and I was attempting to find a way to safely take you home when that lady - Fiona, right? - arrived.” Isabella's cheeks blushed with shame. “Oh my goodness, I am so sorry. You must have had a terrible time because of me." "Hey, no need to fret," Alexander reassured, his voice calm. “We've all experienced nights like those. Perhaps not as severe, but still significant.” While they were driving, Isabella gazed out the window, admiring the luxurious homes they drove past. "Where are we headed to?" "Your home," Alexander replied. "Wow, you must be really out of it. But it's nothing a good night's sleep and some hangover pills can’t take care of." Isabella was in awe when they arrived at a huge mansion. "Is this... really where I live?" Alexander chuckled. "Yeah, if I remember clearly." As Isabella stepped out of the car, she turned back to Alexander. "Will I... will I see you again?" His lips curved into a mysterious smile. "Oh, I think you can count on it. Sooner or later, you'll probably be seeing me every day." Before Isabella could ask what he meant, Alexander had driven off, leaving her standing alone in front of the imposing mansion. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever awaited her inside. As she walked towards the front door, one thought echoed in her mind: Who am I, really? And why can't I remember?
