I shouldn’t have to. I’m sorry, I said. Then, after a moment’s thought, Was it because I stopped kissing you? Yes. My eyes overflowed, hot tears streaking down my cheeks. How could I have been so wrong about her? Had I missed some signs somewhere? I racked my brain, choking back sobs, telling myself it was silly to cry over a girl I’d only really known for a month, give or take a few days.
