I took a deep breath and looked back to where a black SUV was parked across the road with Asher and Haden sitting at the front watching me.
We were at my adopted parents’ house and I am at the front door gathering a little courage to knock on the door. But at the last minute I would chicken out and watch as the front door glared at me silently.
After a few minutes of being a coward I knocked on the door and waited for a response but I received none. I knocked again and received the same response, instead I tried opening the door and it was locked.
I grumbled at myself, if only I had knocked earlier I would have known the house was empty. I decided to turn back around but then an idea popped into my head. I went to the far corner of the house and searched under the flowers, I searched again when I found nothing until I found it.
I smiled in victory and moved to open the front door. Everything was just as I left it, The barely visible tear on the couch was still in its spot. The mini lamp my mum adored was still on that old stool beside the fake plant.
And even the scratch on the stool was still there. It’s just so amazing how little details like these mean a lot. I spotted the black spot on the wall I tried to cover up with paint on the wall.
I remembered I was at home alone back then and I was playing with fire in the living room until I heard footsteps on the front porch and quickly put the fire out by brushing it on the wall and throwing out the wood through the window.
I smiled remembering how my dad scolded me for playing with fire after he smelled smoke in the living room. After that day I still did the same thing until I grew bored of the flames. I took a seat on the couch and decided to wait for them, it was a few minutes past three and I knew my mum would be back soon.
After a few minutes of boredom I decided to check out my room. I climbed the twelve stairs leading to the second floor and took a short trip to my room. I sniffed a bit when I remembered the nights when I was alone at home and my parents had gone for another business trip and my aunt who was supposed to baby sit me was also busy with work. She would often come home very late in the night and leave very early in the morning.
So I had to fend off for myself and learned how to grow up faster. When mum and dad were back they would shower me with gifts apologizing for leaving me alone for a long time but the gifts never made up for the time they missed during my childhood.
I walked to my bed and imagine a seven year old me alone in the house at night tightly holding a huge stuffed bear twice my size. That stuffed bear provided more comfort than my parents had when I was growing up.
I had always envied my friends whose parents had to pick them up from school while I had to wait for my parent’s driver to pick me up from school and take me to school every day. I had always asked mum why she never had a second child because not having any sibling was boring. But she would always say that work has always taken most of her time so she wouldn’t be able to take care of a baby.
I sighed at the depressing memories and I moved to sit on the bed when the front door opened and my heart skipped a bit. I had no idea how I would be able to face my mum after all that has happened, I also wondered how I would be able to look at the people I called parents all my life in the eyes without feeling betrayed and lied to.
I just couldn’t hold the thought without anger simmering in my chest. I let out a breath and opened my bedroom door to go and face my mum. My steps felt heavy and hesitant and I couldn’t control my rapid breathing.
“Cecile!” I sighed when I noticed it was Asher and not my mum. I rushed downstairs and saw them standing at the front door.
“What’s going on?” Haden asked pushing through the door inviting himself in. Ever since Haden apologized to me he has been acting strange as if something would jump out of nowhere and attack. Most especially around me and it has me wondering what was wrong with him.
I just raised my eye brow, “Well they’re not at home so I decided to wait.”
“At least you would have told us something!” He spat and I rolled my eyes. Just when I thought he had changed. Turns out the jerk never left after all.
“Was that why you came here? Because you were worried?” I teased.
“Don’t think so highly of yourself we had other things to worry about than you.” Haden scoffed and folded his arms.
“I would think highly of myself as I want to. You can’t tell me what to do bossy pants!’
“…bossy pants? Wait are you a six year old? Who says that anymore?!” Haden snapped back moving closer as if he wanted to start a fight and hell was I ready for him.
“Would you two stop arguing like eighty year old couples, we’re in a situation here!” Asher interjected shaking his head like he was scolding two naughty kids for playing with mud.
“What is it?” I asked after shooting Haden a glare and he gave one in return.
“Katherine. She called a few minutes ago that Athan was nowhere to be found.”
“…he might have just taken a casual trip somewhere.” I shrugged.
“That was what I thought also before she told me that she hadn’t seen him since last night and this morning his stuffs were gone. And she had tried calling him but his phone was not going through.”
“So you’re telling me he ran away?”
“Yes. The bastard left without telling anyone.” Haden responded.
“What are we waiting for then? We should get back to the cabin.”
“…Haden and I are leaving while you wait for your parents. You need to talk to them. And we would come for you tonight by nine.”
“You guys can’t leave me here alone what if something happens?”
“Have you forgotten you’re transforming into a vampire. You’ll do fine, and we would have been half way home if you two didn’t decide to have an impromptu lovers quarrel.” Asher glared and Haden elbowed him in the stomach.
