The sun drowned deeper in the horizon leaving streaks of gold and pink in the sky. The clouds harmonized with the colour of the sky, each trying to be more outstanding than the other, as if there was a competition.
Though, I was delighted to discern such a wonderous sunset, but I was more delighted by the fact that I had him by my side, sharing the same view.
"It is the most beautiful sunset, I've ever witnessed." I breathed.
"Then, I should take you here often." He flashed his angelic yet impish smile.
"What kind of powers do I have?" I attempted to change the subject.
Honestly, because I couldn't deal with his sweet as honey words.
"Can I also teleport like you? or maybe form a magical bubble around me?"
"Much more than that," he said, his eyes never leaving mine.
"Tell me about it." I didn't want to discuss his past.
Well, I did want to know what ordeals he went through but not now. He wasn't prepared to open up yet.
"You'll have to discover that yourself, " he said, "Even I don't know the limits of Enchanted Tanzanite. You said you can hear thoughts, well, surprisingly, no Witch or Warlock can do this. I'm certain because no one is more powerful than us Starks in all of the realm. We can control people's minds and can even erase their memories but can't hear their thoughts."
"I see... So if I awaken the powers inside me, then can I hear your thoughts too?"
'No—what did I just say? Can't you keep your mouth shut for once?'
"And Why would you want to do that?" He smirked.
'Ughhh. I want to get up and jump off from this cliff.'
"Nothing, just personal reasons," I mumbled and looked down at my hands. Looking in those eyes right now would be a stupidity. They could read me effortlessly.
"Well, if you can't hear my thoughts then it just proves my speculations right." I heard his voice and felt his eyes on me, while not meeting his gaze. "You have no control over your powers because you're too weak right now."
"What will change if I get control over it?" I bit my cheek.
"Then it will be up to you if you want to hear those voices or not, and you can use it to your advantage, " he answered, "Although I can't tell if you would be able to hear my thoughts or not." He smirked at the last part.
'How great will it be? To be able to block off the voices I don't want to hear by myself. My life would be so at ease.'
"How can I do that?" I asked, now looking up at him.
"I will help you, we can start tomorrow."
"No matter how I think about it, you're suspicious." I glanced over his face sceptically.
"You don't trust me." He smiled as if he expected that.
"It's only normal that I don't." I maintained his eye contact without twitching.
The air around us got chiller as he smirked. "You seem rather comfortable sitting beside someone you don't trust."
If I looked into the possibilities of dangers I was in, one shove from this cliff would've been enough to cease my existence. However, I was, indeed, comfortable. Because this person, didn't pose any harm to me. I believed that.
"You won't harm me. I am sure of that." I brushed aside my hair. "Because you want something from me. You confessed it last night. That you need me as much as I need you."
"You're quick to catch on." He grinned.
"So to conclude you're helping me, because there's something only I—as the incarnation of Enchanted Tanzanite—can do." I narrowed my eyes at him, catching him off-guard this time.
His flustered expression only confirmed my conclusion. I didn't know why, but an uneasiness tightened my chest. An uneasiness nothing could soothe. Not the sky, nor the sunset. Nothing.
"There is something I need you to do," He confessed, "but to make things clear, I was planning to let you know when the time comes. Using you was never my intention. How do I make you believe me?" The wind messed up his hair.
The uneasiness that I assumed nothing could soothe, just got healed like that. With a few sentences, those sincere and concerned eyes. Something in me always wanted to believe him.
"I'll believe you. I'm more on the receiving end no matter how I look at this whole situation."
"Phew." He sighed dramatically and smiled afterwards, running a hand through his messed up hair.
"What will I need to do?" I snapped out before I got lured into his darned smile again.
"For now, nothing but awaken your powers and get your mana flowing. I'll help you in that."
"Great then! Text me when you are free."
Time flew by and the hue of the sky now turned into a marvellous shade as of cobalt.
"I should take you back now, Rosie will be waiting," he said.
"Yeah, let's go now," I responded.
Fear rushed down my body, like the rock that slipped from below my feet, and succumbed into darkness when I attempted to stand up. As for him, he had already stood up, busy in examining my moves with his signature smirk. On my second attempt to get up, Tyler extended his hand to me. I grabbed his hand to help myself up.
Putting our shoes on, we skipped out through the portal. Back into the woods. It took me a moment to adjust my eyes to the natural light of the starry sky above me.
"Are you sure, you've never experienced something extraordinary about you, except for hearing thoughts?" He asked me while trekking through the woods.
"Yeah... I can only hear thoughts. That's for now. But I always wanted to get rid of it." My head hung lower in the anxiety of sharing further information but I decided to do it anyway. "I wanted to live like a normal person. Which will not be possible now, 'cause I'm not."
I lifted my head back up to face him. "But at least I have hope, that I'll take control over my powers and would be able to not hear those voices." I smiled weakly.
"I don't get this, you have such a rare ability. Why would you want to get rid of it?"
"It might be rare or cool, to be able to hear people's thought but actually it's not the case, at least not for me. I've had some really worse experiences because of it. I had to change schools and towns, it's been hectic." I sighed.
"They used you." He voiced.
"All of them. The people I had considered friends. And when I was of no use to them, I became the weirdo outcast." I looked away, not wanting to show my miserable side.
"Why would you even let them know about your abilities. I know being different sucks, that's why I've been trying to blend in regardless of how much I hated it." He sounded worried.
"You think I haven't tried it?" I sighed in disbelief. "At my previous school, I was finally happy. I had made a best friend there, her name was Jenna. Of course, I had kept my ability a secret from her and everyone else. Until she found herself a boyfriend, Wesley. He was popular but more of a douchebag. I warned her that he was cheating on her, and she'll get hurt..." I trailed off.
"She didn't listen to you, did she?" He queried.
I nodded mildly.
"To make her believe me, I opted for my worst mistake. I told her the truth, that I can hear people's thoughts and I heard his thoughts about you. I know, I shouldn't have done it. But I couldn't just stand by and watch her get hurt." I brushed my arm.
"You did nothing wrong. You can't change who you are. I don't know if telling her about it worked. But it was a decision of yours because you cared for her."
The warm feeling of getting understood by someone settled in my soul. For the first time, I felt like my feelings were valid. Tyler quietly waited. His attentive expression and complete quietude solaced me. It helped repossessed words to continue further.
"It worked. She believed me, she did, and rushed to her boyfriend to confront him. She was furious, I tried to stop her but failed. The next morning, when I met her in school everything had changed. That was the most horrible day of my life," I told him.
"What happened that day?" He inquired.
The chirping of crickets became more pronounced, filling the silence between us until I decided to break it.
"She took her revenge on me, for trying to mess up with her relationship. Wesley had brainwashed her into believing that I never wanted her happiness and I... I had my eyes on him so I had purposely made up that lie. As her revenge, my secret got out to the whole school," I continued, "I was once again the hot topic everyone was talking about, thinking that I'm a freak, a psychic, a weirdo. They had started to treat me like a disease. Running away from me, and thinking the worst they could think about me."
I huffed a small laugh as I finished my last sentence, pretending like it didn't matter to me. But his jaw tightened and the look in his eyes, was frantic.
"How could they be so ridiculous? And how can you be so calm about it?" Anger was evident in his tone, it kind of frightened me.
"Relax, none of that matters to me now. It's all in the past. And I'm going to put an end to it, by taking control over my powers. You'll help me, right?" I tilted my head a bit and smiled.
"You'll stop hearing thoughts, I'll make sure it happens," He said. His face, depleted of expressions, somewhat determined.
Relief flooded over me and calmed my body. At least he wasn't angry anymore. I didn't know why, but I felt like, his anger was something no one should ever witness. It crept up my spine, giving me chills, even if it lasted for a split second.
Soon we were out of the woods. The chirping of crickets had been replaced by the whooshing of cars. Tyler had already opened the car door for me till I reached there.
To be truthful, I didn't feel any regret after opening up to him as I had expected. Instead, I was pleased. Pleased that now we were close. The invisible wall between us was demolishing.
As I was gazing at the trees passing in a flash through the window, my stomach growled out of hunger reminding me that I hadn't eaten anything at lunch. I hoped he didn't hear that, it'd be too embarrassing if he did.
"How about we grab a bite before I drop you home? There's a place I wanted to try." He asked.
"Yeah, good idea, " I replied with a subtle smile.
Looking down at my legs, I realized I was in no place to be going in any diner right now. My legs were dirty from sitting on the ground. Wearing shorts was a bad idea.
He pulled in to a local drive-in diner, easing off my distress. Sometimes, I almost believed that he could hear my thoughts. Or was I that readable?
"By the way, I forgot to ask you," I said, " Back on the night in the alleyway, when you appeared out of nowhere and knocked Brandt out. How did you know I was there?" I asked while we took bites of our sandwich wraps.
"You're asking me? You really have no idea that you summoned me?" He asked.
"What? No, I didn't, how could I?" I shook my head in panic.
"Before that day, I thought something was wrong with the pendant. I had searched for the other part of Enchanted Tanzanite, and I'd never thought that it would incarnate itself into a human. But that day when you summoned me, all my doubts were cleared. You could summon me because I was wearing the other part of it."
"So you're telling me that I summoned you without knowing and without even trying?"
"Yeah, that's precisely what happened."
"So with the powers, I get protection service from Mr Warlock Stark?" I let out and we shared a laugh.
