The Shattered Mirror
The sky was obsidian, heavy with clouds that seemed to moan with every drop of rain. In a dilapidated apartment on the edge of the city, Robin stood staring at a jagged shard of a broken mirror. He didn't recognize the man reflected there. The distortion wasn't on the glass; it was deep within his soul. They hated me... all of them," Robin hissed through clenched teeth. His fingers trembled as he picked up a surgical knife from the table. He pressed the blade against his palm, expecting pain, but felt only a numbing coldness. To him, the world had become a place of ice. A sudden, soft knock at the door made him jump. He instinctively hid the blade beneath a pile of newspapers. When he opened the door, he found Angel Mary standing there. She was a volunteer from the local parish, a woman whose face always carried a celestial warmth Robin, I haven't seen you in days. Are you alright?" Mary asked, holding out a small container of home-cooked food. Robin forced a thin, artificial smile. "Yes, Mary... I'm fine. Just caught up with some work." "Your eyes look so heavy, Robin. Have you been sleeping at all?" Her question sent a jolt of panic through him. Did she see it? Did she see the predator lurking behind his tired eyes? Meanwhile, across the city, Officer Christopher stepped out of his rain-drenched jeep in front of an abandoned shipyard. He adjusted his damp cap, his eyes sharp and weary from years of witnessing the worst of humanity. Inside the warehouse, the flickering yellow light cast long, dancing shadows. Sir, you need to see this," Constable Vineeth called out, his voice shaking. Christopher walked in. The sight inside was enough to freeze the blood of a lesser man. A victim sat strapped to a chair, lifeless. Carved meticulously into the victim's chest was a symbol—the shape of a shattered mirror. "This is the work of a psychopath," Christopher said, lighting a cigarette, the smoke curling into the cold air. "He views murder as an art form. But Robin... whoever you are, I will hunt you down." Christopher had no way of knowing that the monster he sought was the same 'quiet neighbor' currently accepting a meal from Angel Mary.
