CHAPTER ONE
REJECTED LUNA
The Moon Ceremony
The moon had never looked so beautiful.
Luna stood at the edge of the Mooncrest ceremonial grounds, staring at the enormous silver moon hanging above the forest. Its light spilled over the ancient stone circle, turning everything beneath it pale and almost magical.
Tonight was the Moon Ceremony.
For every young wolf in Mooncrest Pack, it was one of the most important nights of their lives.
It was the night they discovered whether the Moon Goddess had chosen a mate for them.
Luna pressed her fingers together nervously.
Beside her, Maya squeezed her hand.
“Stop shaking,” Maya whispered.
“I’m not shaking.”
“You are.”
Luna looked down.
Her hands were trembling.
Maya smiled. “You’re nervous.”
“Everyone is nervous.”
“Not everyone looks like they’re about to run into the forest.”
Luna laughed softly.
“I just don't want anything embarrassing to happen.”
Maya rolled her eyes.
“Luna, you're worrying too much. Tonight is supposed to be beautiful.”
Luna looked toward the center of the ceremonial grounds.
“I hope it is.”
She had dreamed about this night for years.
Not because she desperately wanted a mate, but because she wanted to know where she belonged.
Growing up in Mooncrest had never been easy.
Luna couldn't shift like the other young wolves.
She had never displayed unusual strength.
She couldn't sense other wolves from great distances.
And whenever the young wolves trained together, Luna was always the one left behind.
Some called her weak.
Others called her defective.
A few even whispered that the Moon Goddess had forgotten her.
Luna had learned to pretend she didn't care.
But deep inside, their words hurt.
Especially tonight.
The ceremonial horn sounded.
Boom.
The entire pack fell silent.
The Alpha's guards moved into position as the elders entered the stone circle.
Then everyone turned toward the massive black wolf approaching from the northern path.
Luna's breath caught.
Damon Blackwood.
The Alpha of Mooncrest.
He was tall, broad-shouldered, and intimidating even when he wasn't trying to be. His black hair moved slightly in the night breeze, and his dark eyes seemed capable of silencing an entire room without a single word.
The pack bowed as he walked past.
Luna lowered her head too.
But when Damon passed her, something strange happened.
Her heart suddenly jumped.
Thump.
She looked up.
Damon had stopped.
For one brief moment, their eyes met.
Luna couldn't breathe.
Something inside her responded to him.
A warmth spread through her chest, followed by a strange pull that she couldn't explain.
Damon's expression changed too.
His eyes widened slightly.
Then the moment disappeared.
He continued walking.
Luna touched her chest.
“What was that?” she whispered.
Maya looked at her.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
The ceremony began.
One by one, the young wolves stepped into the moonlight.
Some received ordinary marks.
Some discovered that their mates belonged to neighboring packs.
Others received no sign at all.
Then Elder Rowan raised his staff.
“Luna.”
Her heart stopped.
The crowd turned toward her.
Maya gave her an encouraging smile.
“Go.”
Luna slowly stepped forward.
Every step felt heavier than the last.
She entered the center of the stone circle.
Moonlight fell directly over her.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Someone in the crowd laughed quietly.
Luna lowered her eyes.
Maybe they were right.
Maybe the Moon Goddess really had forgotten her.
Then—
BOOM!
A powerful wave of silver light exploded across the ceremonial grounds.
Everyone gasped.
The flames surrounding the circle went out.
The wind stopped.
And a brilliant silver crescent appeared at the base of Luna's throat.
Luna cried out as warmth rushed through her body.
Then she heard something.
A voice.
Soft.
Ancient.
Chosen.
Luna's eyes widened.
The entire pack stared at her.
But before she could understand what was happening, another presence entered the circle.
Damon.
The moment he stepped into the moonlight, Luna felt the invisible force between them.
A bond.
Powerful.
Immediate.
Her heart began pounding.
Damon stared at her.
His wolf was fighting beneath his skin.
Then the realization spread through the crowd.
Whispers erupted.
“It's the Alpha's mate.”
“Luna?”
“Impossible.”
“She can't be the Luna.”
Luna barely heard them.
She could only see Damon.
Her fated mate.
The Alpha she had secretly admired from afar.
The man she never believed would even notice her.
Her lips parted.
“Damon…”
He didn't answer.
His expression was unreadable.
Elder Rowan looked from Damon to Luna.
“Alpha Damon,” he said carefully. “The Moon Goddess has spoken.”
Damon's jaw tightened.
The silence became unbearable.
Luna waited.
She waited for him to smile.
For him to step closer.
For him to accept her.
Instead, Damon took a step backward.
Luna's heart sank.
Damon looked at her silver mark.
Then he looked at the watching pack.
His face hardened.
And when he finally spoke, his voice carried across the entire ceremonial ground.
“I reject her.”
Silence.
Luna froze.
Damon's eyes met hers.
“I reject you, Luna.”
Her world shattered.
The crowd erupted into whispers.
Maya immediately stepped forward.
“Damon—”
Luna stopped her.
She couldn't hear anything anymore.
The moon suddenly seemed colder.
The silver mark on her throat burned.
Damon continued.
“You are not strong enough to stand beside an Alpha.”
Luna swallowed hard.
“I…”
Her voice failed.
Damon looked away.
“I cannot allow a weakness like this to become the weakness of Mooncrest.”
Every word cut deeper than the last.
Luna looked around.
Some wolves were staring at her with pity.
Others looked relieved.
Selene, standing near the Alpha's guards, wore a faint smile.
Luna's eyes burned with tears.
She refused to cry.
Not here.
Not in front of them.
Elder Rowan watched her carefully.
His expression wasn't one of pity.
It was fear.
For some reason, that frightened Luna more than Damon’s rejection.
She took a slow breath.
Then she lifted her head.
“I accept your rejection.”
The words were barely louder than a whisper.
But the moment she said them—
CRACK!
A pulse of silver energy exploded from her body.
Every wolf in the ceremonial grounds dropped to one knee.
Damon staggered backward.
His eyes widened.
For the first time that night, the Alpha looked afraid.
The silver crescent on Luna's throat glowed brighter.
Then everything returned to normal.
Luna stared at her hands.
She didn't understand what had happened.
Neither did anyone else.
But Elder Rowan did.
He stared at the mark on Luna's throat.
And under his breath, he whispered:
“No…”
Luna turned toward him.
“What?”
Rowan's face had gone pale.
“The Moonblood…”
Luna frowned.
“What is Moonblood?”
But Rowan didn't answer.
Because high above them, hidden behind the clouds, the moon suddenly turned blood-red for a single heartbeat.
And somewhere beyond the borders of Mooncrest, something ancient opened its eyes.
Luna didn't know it yet.
But Damon Blackwood's rejection had awakened something that had been sleeping for centuries.
And from that night forward, the girl everyone believed was weak would become the greatest threat the Wolf Crest Kingdom had ever known.
