ADELAIDE
I woke up the next day, the remnants of the nightmare clung to me like second skin. I trudged to the bathroom and stepped into the shower, closing my eyes and letting the hot water wash down on me.
Sam Hartley all bloodied up, dead… Liam lying in his place, blue eyes lifeless, staring up at the skin.
My eyes snapped open and I pushed my hair out of my face, reaching for the liquid soap and loofah. I washed my body and face before stepping out. I approached the counter and stared at my reflection in the mirror.
Today is a new day Adelaide, Sam Hartley's death was an unfortunate accident and it wasn't your fault. You can't continue living like this, it's not healthy and it will only bring suspicion onto yourself.
I repeated the words a couple of times before getting ready for the day. I blow dried my hair and did my makeup, satisfied that I finally looked like myself. I walked back into my room about to pick up my phone when a flash of lightning followed by several cracks of thunder stopped me. I walked over to the windows, noticing the rain and how chaotic the weather was.
“Strange…” I mumbled, winter was almost here and it was raining all of a sudden. Shrugging, I picked up my phone and called Magnus.
“Good morning Prime.”
“Good morning Magnus, can you please send a car?.” I requested.
“Yes Prime, right away.”
“Thank you.” I said, ending the call. I walked to my closet, picked out an outfit and got dressed. I slipped on my heels and grabbed my bag before exiting my room.
I made my way downstairs, heading for the front door when three guards stepped onto my path. I raised a brow, staring at them, they had uniforms on which was strange as the guards in Yellowstone didn't wear uniforms. I folded my arms across my chest.
"Is anything the matter?"
"The Alpha Prime requests your presence." One of them spoke.
I rolled my eyes, a sigh escaping my lips.
This is probably another stupid security thing.
"Look I have to go to the Consulate so tell Jacob to stop being paranoid and let me live my life." I said, moving past them only for a hand to grab my arm, I turned to them.
"Do you have a death wish?" I snapped.
"Alpha Prime ordered us to bring you to him. We can either do this the easy way or the hard way."
I scoffed.
"Do you really think any of you are a match for me?" I inquired.
"No, but I assure you it will not be an easy fight." One of them said, I glared at him, I was strong and was confident of holding my own against one or two of them but three... it would be hard.
"Fine. Lead the way." I grumbled, snatching my arm from his grip. He nodded and stood aside, gesturing down the hall towards the elevator.
“Isn't he in his office?” I inquired.
“No” he replied, as we stepped into the elevator and a feeling of unease washed over me when I saw the man press the basement button. I swallowed hard, watching as the numbers went down until it got to the basement. The doors opened and I stepped out, I was immediately hit by the overwhelming smell of blood.
What the hell...
There were two other occupants in the room. Jacob and...
Oh Eda...
My eyes went wide, it felt as if someone had punched me right in the guts, my knees threatened to give out as my heart sank into my stomach, a chill settling in my bones.
"Liam..” I cried out, rushing over only for two of the men to hold me back. I thrashed against them like a wild beast, snarling at Jacob.
"Let him go!!! What did you do to him?!!" I screamed, my eyes on my cousin who was barely hanging onto the chain that kept him upright. Jacob turned to me and I flinched at the intense look of rage in his eyes that was directed at me.
“Leave us.” He barked, the men immediately let go of me and I barely sensed them leave.
"Did you think I won't find out?!" He snarled, approaching me. He towered over me and I could feel the anger rolling off him in waves. I swallowed hard, looking up at him, trying to hide the fear in my eyes.
He couldn't know... Adlartok said it won't be traced back to me.
"You dare conspire with another Alpha Prime to send a hit man into my continent to kill me!!!" He thundered.
Oh Eda,
I looked away only for him to grab my jaw and force me to look back at him, his nails dug into my skin. The red of his eyes were vivid, the same colour as the blood around us.
"Because of you, I lost a good wolf." He snarled before taking a step back, his hand dropping from my face.
"P-Please Jacob, I can explain... please j-just listen." I pleaded, he chuckled, folding his arms across his chest, his fist stained with Liam's blood. I glanced at Liam who was struggling to stay conscious before turning to Jacob.
"I-it was a mistake, Sam Hartley was never meant to be shot, if I had known, an innocent wolf was going to die, I would have called it off." I whispered, he stared at me, chuckling once more.
"And you think your little explanation will make everything better?" he asked, mockingly. I looked down at my feet, tears making my vision blur.
"I'm sorry"
"No matter, I will remedy this. The humans have a saying, "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth... and a wolf for a wolf."
My head snapped up as my eyes widened at the implication of his words. I screamed at Jacob as he made his way back to Liam, unclasping the cuffs and forcing him to face me. Liam's unfocused eyes on me.
"PLEASE DON'T DO THIS!!!" I begged. "He had no idea what was going to happen, he's an innocent party."
Jacob tugged his head to the side, exposing his neck.
"Sam Hartley was an innocent wolf too."
I fell to my knees, tears streaming down my cheeks as I pressed my hands together.
"Please Jacob, I beg you, don't do this. I'll stop fighting you, I'll be the Luna Prime you need me to be but please don't kill Liam, please don't kill my cousin." I cried out.
"Your words are as valueless as the dirt under my shoes Adelaide." He snarled, rearing his head back, fangs exposed about to deliver the killing blow.
"MARK ME!!" I screamed, the words causing everyone in the room to freeze. I staggered onto my feet, wiping the tears away.
"What did you say?" Jacob asked, his voice deceptively calm. I swallowed hard, my limbs shaking
"Don't kill Liam, m... mark me instead." I whispered.
"N...no... A...Ade....Adelaide... do...don't" Liam's weak voice uttered, causing more tears to well up in my eyes. Jacob let him fall to the floor as he stepped over him and approached me. He stopped in front of me, my eyes moved to Liam who laid in a heap, all bloody and bruised.
"And what's stopping me from killing the boy and still marking you?" He asked, playing with a loose curl. It felt like I was being toyed with and I was helpless to do anything about it.
"Please Jacob." I begged.
His smile was all teeth as he cupped my face, wiping the tears away.
"Haven't you heard, Adelaide? Better to ask the devil for mercy than a Mont Blanc."
A sob escaped my lips, if he killed Liam, I had no idea what I was going to do. He meant more to me than my life itself. I held fistfuls of his shirt, crying into his chest.
"Shhh... poor Adelaide... tears are not going to solve anything." He cooed, his tone mocking as he wrapped his arms around my waist.
"You will pay for this." He whispered into my ear, his body cold against mine. I pulled back, barely able to see with the tears.
"Please don't hurt him anymore. I'll be good, I'll never go against you."
He tucked my hair behind my ear and away from my neck, I bared my throat, watching as his fangs made an appearance once more, sharp and gleaming underneath the harsh fluorescent light. He reared his head back and I closed my eyes as he sank his fangs into me.
The pain was indescribable, it felt like hot liquid fire had replaced the blood in my veins, incinerating me from the inside out. The beast within me thrashed and fought against the pain, screams and cries left my lips. His arms kept me secured and unable to move.
I opened my eyes, the edges of my vision dark and blurry, I could do nothing but cling to him as the pain coursed through me. Once he was done, he pulled away from my neck and stared down at me, with cold and dispassionate eyes. I swallowed hard, reaching up to touch the mark, I could feel something warm and sticky. Pulling my fingers away, I stared at the blood... my blood.
His arms fell to his side and whatever strength I thought was mine was gone. My knees hit the ground, pain shot up my body. He brushed past me leaving Liam and I alone in the basement. I forced myself to crawl over to Liam, every movement forcing pained whimpers to escape my lips.
"L-liam?" I called out, my body was on fire, pain radiating from my neck, from the mark. He didn't answer. I reached him, pulling his body to mine, cradling his head on my lap.
"L-li..." my voice cracked as I stared at the extent of his injuries. Jacob had hurt him… badly. I could see the lacerations to his abdomen, swellings and contusions on different parts of his body, it was a miracle he was alive.
"I'm so sorry Lili, I'm so sorry. This is all my fault." I whispered, sobs escaping my lips. The guilt weighed heavily on my heart and soul.
