Blurb

Adrian Blackwood has built the kind of life most people only dream about. A thriving real estate empire. A beautiful wife with a career of her own. Two children who adore him. A house on a hill where nothing, on the surface, is out of place.

Then a business trip to Miami puts him in the path of Elena, a woman who has no idea who he really is, and no reason to ask. What starts as a passing conversation on a busy street corner becomes something neither of them planned for, something that grows quietly, dangerously, across an ocean of distance from the life Adrian is supposed to be protecting.

Some doors, once opened, refuse to stay closed.

As Adrian's two worlds edge closer together, the people around him begin to sense what he has spent so long hiding. A wife who trusted him completely. A woman who believed she mattered to him alone. And a secret that was never going to stay a secret forever.

This is a story about the lies we tell to protect the people we love, and the ones we tell to protect ourselves. About what it costs to rebuild something broken, and what it costs when it breaks again. About choosing yourself when everyone expects you to choose forgiveness instead.

Behind every closed door is a truth waiting to get out. The only question is who it destroys on the way.

Before Miami
Adrian Blackwood had never considered himself a man who needed much.He had money. A successful company. A beautiful home in the hills of Los Angeles. A name people recognized. But none of those things mattered when he came home in the evening and heard two tiny voices racing toward him."Daddy!"Adrian barely had time to put his briefcase down.A small blur came flying across the marble floor. He crouched just in time to catch his son."Whoa."The little boy wrapped both arms around his father's neck."Daddy!"Adrian laughed."I missed you too, Noah."Three year old Noah pulled back and immediately began talking."Mommy said I can't have ice cream."Adrian looked toward the kitchen."Did she?"His son nodded solemnly."She said no."Adrian lowered his voice."That's very unfortunate."Noah's eyes widened."Can I have some?"Before Adrian could answer, another small voice called from behind him."Daddy!"He turned. His daughter, Lily, stood at the entrance of the living room holding her stuffed rabbit.Adrian opened one arm.She ran into it."There you are."He kissed the top of her head.Lily immediately complained."Noah got Daddy first."Adrian laughed."Is that why you're angry?"She nodded."Very angry.""Well, I think Daddy has enough hugs for both of you."He pulled them both against him. From the kitchen doorway, Vanessa watched them. She smiled. This was the part of Adrian she loved most. Not the businessman. Not the man whose face appeared in magazines beside photographs of expensive buildings and company launches. This man.Her husband. The father of her children. The man who could spend ten hours negotiating a multimillion dollar deal and then come home and sit on the floor because his three year old daughter wanted to show him a drawing of a purple elephant.Vanessa folded her arms."Don't encourage them."Adrian looked at her."Encourage them to do what?"Noah immediately pointed at his mother."Mommy said no ice cream.""I heard.""And Daddy says yes."Vanessa raised an eyebrow."Does he?"Adrian smiled."Apparently I do."She shook her head."Adrian."He laughed."Fine. No ice cream."Noah's face fell.Lily giggled.Vanessa walked over and kissed her husband."Welcome home."Adrian's expression softened."Good to be home."That night, the children were asleep by nine.Adrian stood on the balcony outside their bedroom, looking over the Los Angeles skyline.Vanessa stepped beside him."You have that look again."He glanced at her."What look?""The one you get when you're thinking about work.""I'm always thinking about work.""I know."She rested her head against his shoulder."Miami?"Adrian nodded."I leave Thursday.""How long?""A week."Vanessa sighed."Again?""It's important.""I know."She looked out at the city."Sometimes I think your company is your third child."Adrian smiled."Only third?"She laughed."Maybe fourth."He wrapped an arm around her."I'll call every night.""You better.""I will."She looked up at him."Promise?"Adrian kissed her forehead."Promise."Inside the bedroom, their phones began ringing almost simultaneously.Vanessa laughed."Your business is calling."Adrian looked at his phone. Then at his wife."I'll deal with it tomorrow.""Really?""Really."He turned the phone face down.Vanessa smiled."Good."She slipped her hand into his.For that night, Adrian chose his family over everything else.Three days later, Adrian stood at the airport with his suitcase beside him.Vanessa had come to see him off.The twins were with the nanny, both still too young to understand why Daddy was leaving.Adrian hugged his wife."One week."Vanessa smiled."One week.""Then I'm home.""You'd better be."He kissed her."Take care of yourself.""You too."He looked at her for another moment before walking toward the departure gate.Vanessa remained where she was.Watching him disappear. She had no reason to worry. No reason to suspect anything. Her husband was going to Miami for business. That was all.Miami greeted Adrian with heat. The moment he stepped outside the airport, warm air wrapped around him.It was completely different from Los Angeles.Brighter.Louder.More alive. His driver took him to the hotel, where he spent most of the afternoon in meetings.By evening, he was exhausted. But he still had one more appointment.A potential investor wanted to discuss a local development project.Adrian wasn't particularly interested. He almost canceled.Instead, he went. The meeting ended later than expected. When he finally stepped outside, he decided to walk. The streets were alive with music, tourists, restaurants, and people enjoying the evening. For the first time all day, Adrian wasn't thinking about numbers. He wasn't thinking about contracts. He wasn't thinking about Los Angeles. Then he heard a woman's voice."Careful."He turned.A group of tourists stood near a small tour vehicle. At the center of them was a woman. She was holding a map in one hand and gesturing toward the street with the other.Adrian stopped. He didn't know why.Perhaps it was the way she laughed.Perhaps it was the ease in her expression. She wasn't dressed like the women he usually encountered at business events. There was nothing calculated about her appearance. She simply looked comfortable being herself. Then she turned.Their eyes met.Everything around Adrian seemed to become strangely quiet.Elena didn't know who he was.She only saw a tall stranger standing several feet away, watching her. For one suspended moment, neither of them looked away. Something passed between them. Not love. Not yet. Not even attraction they could name. Just a spark. A strange awareness. The kind that makes two strangers wonder why they suddenly noticed each other in a crowd of hundreds.Elena's smile slowly disappeared.Adrian's expression remained unreadable. Then someone called her name."Elena!"She looked away. The moment broke. Adrian remained where he was.Elena turned back toward her group. And neither of them knew that they had just met the person who would eventually become impossible to forget.
