As Emma uttered the name, she felt a sharp pang in her chest, as if her heart was being torn apart. Aria—a name that had become a malignant presence in her life, the woman who held Arthur's heart.
At the time, Emma had resorted to drastic measures to ensure Arthur's commitment to her, driving Aria away at any cost. She even orchestrated events to separate Aria from Arthur, including manipulating circumstances that led to Aria's mother's demise. Aria, disheartened, had left Arthur, giving Emma the opening she needed to leverage her family's wealth to coerce Arthur into marriage.
For years, Arthur had harbored a deep resentment towards Emma, particularly when she dared to mention Aria. Today, she broke that unspoken rule once again.
Arthur's fists clenched, his gaze turning cold as he addressed Emma. "Who do you think you are, bringing up her name? To be an obedient Mrs. Blackwood, you must learn to keep your mouth shut!"
Emma had never mentioned Aria in Arthur's presence, fearing it would jeopardize their fragile relationship. "I won't mention her again," she murmured. "What would you like for breakfast tomorrow? I'll prepare it. Your clothes are cleaned, so if you're heading to the office, remember to take them with you. I'll pack them for you. I..."
"Enough!" Arthur's impatience flared. "Emma, you've never changed all these years."
"You make me sick!"
Grabbing the quilts and pillows from the wardrobe, Arthur made his way to the living room to spend the night.
Emma held on tightly to Arthur's hands, her gaze pleading. "Arthur, please spend time with me for another ten months. I can divorce you after ten months. Please, don't hate me."
Arthur was taken aback by Emma's words. She had once vowed to cling to him for a lifetime, even if he didn't love her, yet now she spoke of divorce after ten months—an unprecedented shift in behavior.
"What game are you playing?" Arthur replied sarcastically.
"I'm tired, and I want to be free."
Throughout their conversation, Emma kept her gaze lowered. Unexpectedly, tears welled up in her eyes and streamed down her cheeks. Arthur came home every day, but he arrived late, rarely engaging with Emma beyond their bedroom.
Emma's sudden announcement of divorce after ten months puzzled Arthur. Would she truly let go of their marriage so easily?
When he had married Emma, he had promised her father to take good care of her. Moreover, Emma struggled to take care of herself in her daily life; without him, she would be lost. How would she survive after divorcing him?
Emma had gone to great lengths to conceive Arthur's child, resorting to manipulation to ensure his continued presence in her life. Each time they were intimate, she cooperated eagerly, as though she were sacrificing her own happiness to be with Arthur until the end of her days.
That night, Arthur was intoxicated and kissed Emma, momentarily bringing her joy. But his mention of Aria quickly dashed her hopes.
"Aria, I'll divorce Emma and marry you," he declared, pouring cold water over her.
With tears in her eyes, Emma stared blankly at the ceiling, her heart heavy with despair. Was Arthur truly so eager to marry Aria?
Unfortunately, she wouldn't be around to see it.
The next day, Emma accompanied her best friend, Grace, shopping at the mall. Grace, four months pregnant, exuded joy and excitement. Concerned that her illness might prevent her from being there for Grace during childbirth, Emma decided to prepare clothes for the baby in advance, displaying a level of care and attention that surpassed even Grace's own.
Observing Emma's unusual behavior, Grace questioned her. "Emma, what are you doing? You can always choose clothes after the baby is born. It's too early right now."
"I'm afraid I won't have the chance."
"Why wouldn't you have the chance? You're going to be the baby's godmother."
Emma smiled faintly, her thoughts drifting to her own desire to become a mother and experience the happiness Grace had found.
"Emma, look, I saw Arthur." Grace's excited voice snapped Emma out of her reverie.
Turning around, Emma's smile faltered. Her fists clenched tightly, her heart breaking anew as she watched Arthur and Aria browsing through clothes in the distance.
