"Do you love Aria that much?"
Emma's eyes welled up with tears. She had loved this man for so long, but he would always turn his back on her.
Arthur didn't hesitate at all. "I love her. Marrying you was never my intention. After divorcing you, I'll marry her as soon as possible."
The divorce agreement landed in Emma's hand. Staring at the bold words, she gripped the paper tightly. Their five-year marriage was ending because of Aria. Emma was willing to get a divorce from Arthur, but there was a big misunderstanding. Aria would be ecstatic if she knew this, and that wouldn't happen on Emma's watch.
Emma tossed the agreement aside. "I've changed my mind."
Her defiance angered Arthur, and he yanked her out of bed. "I knew you were manipulative. You faked a stomachache to avoid the divorce. How dare you play tricks on me repeatedly?"
"This is what Aria wants, not me. I won't let her marry you. If I could, I'd push her off a cliff!" Emma exclaimed, trapped in her own web of lies. She hated Aria for causing her so much pain.
Arthur glared at Emma, fury contorting his face. "What did you say?"
"I said Aria is a two-faced b*tch!"
Arthur struck Emma hard, sending her sprawling onto the bed.
Tears streamed down her face as a burning sensation spread across her cheek. Burying herself in the covers, Emma cried hysterically.
"Emma, the biggest regret of my life is knowing you!" Arthur yelled before storming out.
Alone in the hospital bed, Emma wailed in despair. She was in turmoil, clutching her womb as she sobbed.
"Arthur, do you know the biggest regret of my life is falling in love with you?"
Emma spent the next two days alone in the hospital. With no family or close relatives, she was truly alone. After her father's passing five years ago, her divorced mother had abandoned her. Life was bleak, yet there was once a flicker of warmth.
That was Lucas.
Lucas and Emma had been classmates since elementary school. After Emma's marriage, he gradually faded from her life. Now, with her separation from Arthur, she expected him to come rushing to her side. However, Emma's heart belonged solely to Arthur.
Lucas visited her regularly, but each time, he found her gazing longingly out the window. This continued for a week until she finally spoke, only to tell him to stop visiting.
Frowning, Lucas said solemnly, "Arthur's divorcing you, yet you're still hung up on him."
Emma shook her head. No matter how much she thought of Arthur, it wouldn't change the fact that he loved Aria. She turned, her face pale as a ghost. Alarmed by her appearance, Lucas panicked. Pregnancy alone shouldn't make her look so frail, so fragile.
"I don't want to burden you, Lucas. We've known each other for years. You should know me by now."
"No, I don't. And all I know is that Arthur doesn't deserve you!"
Emma had almost forgotten she was the only one who knew about her cancer. The others remained blissfully unaware. She turned back and asked weakly, "It's the Mid-Autumn Festival. I'd love some mooncakes. Could you get some for me?"
Her request sparked a flicker of hope in Lucas's eyes. He nodded eagerly and hurried out to buy Emma some mooncakes.
The moment Lucas left, Emma, fueled by exhaustion, dragged herself out of the ward. Feeling somewhat recovered, she planned to leave without a goodbye, not wanting Lucas to suspect anything.
But before leaving the hospital, she wanted to see Arthur. Perhaps, like Grace and Lucas had said, Arthur was the only one in her heart. No matter how many times he hurt her, she couldn't resist being drawn to him.
"Emma," she chided herself, "you only have yourself to blame for this mess."
Aria was being discharged today. Despite having nothing medically wrong with her, it had taken over a month for her to leave the hospital.
Emma stood by the ward door, peering through the window at the figures inside.
