The Hunt Begins
Chapter 1 – The Hunt Begins The city of Velmora never slept. Its streets pulsed with neon lights and the distant hum of restless souls, but beneath it all, in the shadowed corners, something darker stirred. Something ancient and relentless. Prince Rael of the Nightborne vampires was one of those things. His boots clicked softly against the stone pavement as he moved through the city’s narrow alleyways, his senses sharp, the weight of centuries of bloodshed weighing heavily on his shoulders. It had been days since he’d last hunted, days since he’d felt the adrenaline rush of the kill. But tonight was different. Rael’s crimson eyes gleamed in the darkness as he picked up the scent. The rogue was close. His target had been a problem for weeks—an errant vampire who had broken the laws of the Nightborne clan. Weak, desperate, and driven by his own hunger for power, the rogue had been leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. Rael couldn’t allow that. Not on his watch. As the wind whispered through the streets, Rael’s predatory instincts sharpened. Every movement was fluid, purposeful, as if he were the city’s predator, and the rogue its prey. Suddenly, a rustle in the shadows. Rael’s lips curved into a cold, predatory smile. “You can’t run forever,” he murmured to himself, stepping forward with grace, his dark cloak trailing behind him. The rogue had no idea he was being hunted. Rael stopped, his gaze fixed on a shadowed figure darting between the buildings. He inhaled sharply, the unmistakable scent of blood filling his senses. The rogue was injured. Good. Rael stalked forward, silent as death itself, and in one swift movement, his hand shot out, grabbing the rogue by the neck and slamming him against the cold stone wall. The rogue’s eyes widened in shock, his mouth opening to speak, but no words came out. “You thought you could escape me?” Rael’s voice was low, like thunder in the distance. His fangs glistened, the hunger rising within him. “You’ve made a grave mistake.” The rogue gasped for air, trying to wriggle free, but Rael’s grip was unyielding. “I—I didn’t mean—” the rogue stammered, his eyes wild with fear. Rael's gaze hardened. "You think I care about your excuses? You've broken the laws of my kind. You've stained our name with your recklessness." A cruel chuckle escaped the rogue's lips, a strange glint in his eyes. “You don’t understand, Rael. You don’t understand what’s coming for you." Rael narrowed his eyes, studying the rogue’s expression. There was something in his words that struck a chord, a chilling unease gnawing at the back of his mind. “What do you mean?” Rael demanded. The rogue’s lips trembled, a sickly grin spreading across his face. "You—her—you’re all cursed. And she’s—she’s back." The last words were barely a whisper, a warning that hung in the air like the scent of something foul. Before Rael could respond, the rogue’s body began to convulse. His limbs stiffened, and with a final, agonized scream, he disintegrated into dust before Rael’s eyes. Rael’s jaw clenched, his heart pounding in his chest. She’s back. The rogue’s words echoed in his mind as he stared at the pile of ash at his feet. He didn’t know who "she" was, but he would find out. Whatever threat had just emerged, Rael would hunt it down. He had no choice. For as long as he had lived, there had always been a prophecy—an ancient tale whispered in the dark corners of his world. A tale of a woman who would undo everything he had ever known. A woman who could break the curse that bound him. Rael didn’t believe in prophecies. But tonight, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something had shifted. That the moment he had been dreading had finally arrived. And with it, the end of everything he had ever known.
