Svala Voss is nineteen years old and the only daughter of Finland’s most feared mafia don. She has spent her entire life inside a golden cage of cameras, armed guards, and rules that never bend. When a rival collective puts a ten-million-euro bounty on her head, her father assigns a new permanent shadow: Kael Draven, a silent six-foot-six giant with lethal hands and eyes like frozen steel.

He follows her everywhere. He sleeps outside her door. He breaks the bones of any man who looks at her too long.

Svala has never been anyone’s prey. She pushes him, tests him, and refuses to be owned. What starts as pure defiance turns into something far more dangerous: stolen nights, quiet confessions, and a hunger neither of them can kill.

But Kael is not the mercenary her father hired.

And Svala is not the fragile princess anyone believes her to be.

When the truth finally surfaces, the golden cage shatters, blood hits the snow, and the girl who was never allowed to rule takes everything.

The golden cage holds her beneath silver frost
CHAPTER ONE The snow never stopped in Helsinki that winter. It fell in thick, relentless sheets against the floor-to-ceiling windows of my suite, turning the city lights into blurred smears of gold and cold blue. I stood barefoot on the heated marble, staring out at the frozen harbor, and counted the cameras for the hundredth time. Seventeen in this wing alone. Four more in the corridor. Two trained on the door of my bedroom. Golden cage. Pretty words for a prison built of money and fear. I was nineteen years old and I had never walked down a street without at least three armed men pretending not to watch me. My father called it protection. I called it ownership. Every breath I took was monitored, logged, analyzed. Even the way I slept was recorded on a hard drive somewhere in the basement. Tonight the cage felt tighter than usual. The door behind me opened without a knock. Only one man in this house was allowed to do that. “Svala.” My father’s voice. Low. Controlled. The same tone he used when ordering a man’s tongue removed. I didn’t turn. “You’re late.” “There’s been a development.” He stepped into the room, the scent of cigars and winter following him. “A rival collective put a price on your head this morning. Ten million euros. Open contract.” The words landed like ice water down my spine, but I kept my face still. I had trained myself never to flinch in front of him. “Who?” “Black Ice. What’s left of them.” He paused. “I’ve assigned new security. Permanent. He starts now.” I finally turned. And the air left the room. The man standing just behind my father was enormous. Six-foot-six at least, broad enough to block the doorway completely. Black coat is still dusted with snow. Dark hair cut short. A face carved from something harder than bone high cheekbones, a mouth that looked like it had forgotten how to smile, and eyes the colour of frozen steel. He didn’t blink. He didn’t shift. He simply existed in the space like a loaded weapon someone had forgotten to put away. “This is Kael Draven,” my father said. “He answers only to me. And now to you. He will not leave your side.” Kael’s gaze locked on mine. No deference. No curiosity. Just a cold, absolute assessment, as if he were measuring how many ways he could end me if the order ever came. Something hot and reckless uncoiled low in my stomach. I smiled the slow, sharp smile I reserved for men who thought they could own me. “Leave us,” I told my father. He hesitated only a second, then inclined his head and walked out. The door clicked shut. The cameras kept watching. Kael didn’t move. I crossed the room slowly, bare feet silent on marble, until I stood directly in front of him. He smelled of cold air, gun oil, and something darker underneath. I had to tip my head back to meet his eyes. “You’re supposed to protect me,” I said softly. “Don't stare at me like you’re deciding where to put the bullet.” His voice, when it came, was low enough to vibrate in my ribs. “I’m deciding how many people I’ll have to kill to keep you breathing.” The honesty of it should have terrified me. Instead it made my pulse kick hard against my throat. I reached up and pressed two fingers to the center of his chest, over the place a heart should be. The muscle beneath my touch was unyielding. “You’re in my private wing,” I murmured. “No one enters here without permission. Not even the men my father pays to die for me.” “I have permission.” “Not from me.” Something flickered in those frozen eyes. Not anger. Something hotter. More dangerous. I stepped closer until the front of my silk robe brushed the wool of his coat. The heat of him bled through the fabric. I had spent years being handled like porcelain. Fragile. Valuable. Breakable. I was none of those things, and I needed him to understand it before this arrangement went any further. So I did the only thing that made sense. I fisted the front of his coat, rose onto my toes, and dragged his mouth down to mine. It wasn’t soft. It wasn’t curious. It was a challenge thrown like a blade. For one frozen second he didn’t respond. Then a low sound tore from his throat and his hands slammed against the wall on either side of my head, caging me in. His mouth opened over mine with a hunger that felt like violence. Teeth scraped. Tongues met in a clash of heat and defiance. I bit his lower lip hard enough to taste copper and felt him growl against me. He shoved the robe off my shoulders in one rough motion. It pooled at my feet. I was wearing nothing underneath. The cold air kissed my skin a second before his hands became large, calloused, possessive. He lifted me like I weighed nothing and carried me to the wide bed without breaking the kiss. When my back hit the mattress he followed, bracing his weight on his forearms so he didn’t crush me, but the press of him was still overwhelming. Solid. Inescapable. I shoved his coat off. He shrugged out of it without lifting his mouth from mine. Shirt next. Buttons scattered. My nails raked down the ridged muscle of his abdomen and he made another of those dark sounds that went straight between my legs. When he finally pushed inside me it was with one long, controlled thrust that forced a broken gasp from my throat. He was thick, relentless, filling me so completely the stretch bordered on pain. I locked my legs around his hips and met every stroke with equal force, refusing to be taken quietly. Our bodies moved like we were fighting as much as f*****g angry, desperate, perfect. His mouth found the side of my neck and bit down. I arched and dragged my nails across his back hard enough to leave marks he would feel for days. The orgasm hit me like a detonation. White-hot. Violent. I cried out against his shoulder and felt him follow a heartbeat later, hips stuttering, a low curse torn from his throat as he buried himself to the hilt and came. For several long seconds the only sound was our breathing and the soft hiss of snow against the windows. Kael pulled out carefully, rolled to the side, and sat on the edge of the bed with his back to me. The muscles there flexed as he dragged a hand through his hair. I lay still, pulse still hammering, the scent of s*x and cold air thick around us. He stood, gathered his clothes, and dressed with the same silent efficiency he had entered with. Only when he was fully covered again did he look at me. Those steel eyes held something new now. Something that looked almost like recognition. “This changes nothing,” he said, voice flat. “I am still your shadow. You will still follow every rule I set. And if anyone touches you, I will end them.” I sat up slowly, letting the sheet pool at my waist, and met his gaze without flinching. “You’re wrong,” I answered, equally quiet. “It changes everything.” He held my stare for one more heartbeat, then turned and walked to the door. His hand closed around the handle. That was when the soft electronic chime sounded from the tablet on my nightstand, the one hardwired to the estate’s private security feed. A red alert. Unauthorized movement on the eastern perimeter. Kael’s head snapped toward the sound at the exact same moment mine did. Our eyes locked again across the dim room. And for the first time since he had walked through my door, I saw something close to fear in him. Not for himself. For me.
