Alex Whitfield was never meant to be extraordinary.

To the world, he is just another construction worker operating machines by the lake, a quiet man trapped beneath the expectations of a wife and family who see him as a failure. He builds the foundations of other people's dreams while struggling to keep his own life from collapsing.

Then the sky breaks.

A mysterious meteorite, carrying energy unlike anything humanity has ever encountered, strikes during a violent celestial storm. Alex survives an impossible event that should have killed him, but he awakens changed. His body has been rebuilt, his mind transformed, and hidden within him is a power beyond human understanding.

Strength that defies physics. Intelligence beyond imagination. A connection to forces that may not belong to Earth.

But miracles attract attention.

When Alex saves lives through abilities he barely understands, doctors, corporations, and secret organizations begin searching for the man behind the impossible events. To some, he is the greatest scientific discovery in history. To others, he is a weapon waiting to be controlled.

As Alex struggles to understand what he has become, he must decide whether he will hide from the world or accept the responsibility that comes with his new existence.

Because humanity has always looked to the stars for answers.

It never expected the answer to come back as a man.

Chapter 1: The Weight of the Earth
The hydraulic whine of the excavator was the only thing loud enough to drown out the echoes of the morning. Alex sat in the cab of the CAT 320, his hands moving over the joysticks. Below him, the steel bucket bit into the dirt, clearing foundations for another lakeside villa. To his right, the lake stretched out like glass under the late afternoon sun. To his left stood the skeletal frames of half-built mansions, monuments to wealth Alex knew he would never touch. He was thirty-two, his knuckles were permanently stained with grease, and his back throbbed before noon every day. In the glovebox of his truck sat a broken toaster he had picked up off a neighbor's curb last week, half-disassembled. He liked fixing things that other people threw away. It gave him something quiet to do with his hands when his mind was too crowded. Right now, his mind was full of Brenda. “Do you know what it feels like?” her voice echoed in his head, sharp and exhausted, just as it had when she showed up at the site three hours ago. “Watching my sister plan a second vacation while we are still calculating grocery bills? Marcus is opening another location, Alex. And I am driving a ten-year-old hatchback with a dented bumper because you are content sitting in the dirt.” She had not cared that his crew was listening. She had set his forgotten lunchbox on the hood of his truck, turned around without looking at him, and driven off, leaving him standing there in his high-vis vest while the other men suddenly found the dirt very interesting to look at. Alex gripped the joysticks a little tighter. He remembered loving Brenda when they married five years ago. But as her family’s business took off, her frustration had metastasized. To Brenda and her mother, Alex was not a steady partner. He was proof that she had settled. A sharp rap on the cabin window broke his thoughts. Jackson gestured toward the horizon. "Wrap it up for the day, Alex! Look at the sky. Weather radio says there is an unusual advisory, something about atmospheric disturbances. Let us get the equipment secured." "Roger that, Jackson. Just parking the rig." He killed the engine, and the silence rushed into the cab. The sky looked wrong. The sunset was not orange. It was a bruised purple, shot through with thin streaks of green. As the crew packed into their trucks, Alex stayed behind. Going home meant walking into a quiet house where Brenda would either look through him or start another slow argument about their future. Instead, he walked down to the secluded strip of gray sand near the rocks. He had walked half a mile when his ears began to ring. It was not a sharp pain. It was a steady, high-frequency hum, like a tuning fork vibrating right behind his teeth. The hair on his arms stood up. The smell of ozone filled his lungs, and the gentle lapping of the lake stopped dead, as if the water had lost its tide. High above, the purple sky tore open. A streak of white-hot light cut through the clouds. It was not a shooting star. It was a jagged rock, burning crimson as it hurtled straight down. Alex took three steps back, his boots skidding on the wet gravel, but as the rock broke the lower cloud layer, the high-frequency hum in his jaw pitched up into a clear, harmonic pitch, as if the falling mass was locking onto his exact position. Panic hit him. Alex turned to run, but his toe caught a buried root in the sand. He went down hard, scraping his palms against the stones. Rolling onto his back, the heat off the falling rock scorched his face. It was thirty feet above his head, roaring like a furnace. Then the sky struck back. A thick pillar of golden energy dropped from the clouds, hitting the meteorite dead center in mid-air. The stone did not shatter. It vaporized into a cloud of glowing, superheated ash. Before Alex could shield his eyes, the golden column drove straight through the cloud of dust and hit him square in the chest. Liquid fire flooded his veins. His ribs groaned under a sudden, intense pressure, his muscles tightening so hard he could not draw breath. The glowing ash rained down over his body, sinking through his work clothes and absorbing directly into his skin. His heart gave one violent, heavy thump against his ribs, and stopped. The light faded, leaving the beach quiet under the rising stars. Alex lay still on the sand, his eyes open, staring up into the dark.
