Chapter 5: The Journey to Blackwood Fortress
The first light of dawn painted the sky in shades of gold and crimson.
A cool breeze swept through Silver Moon Village, carrying with it the scent of pine trees and fresh earth. Normally, the village would already be awake with children laughing and merchants preparing their stalls.
Today, it was silent.
The scars of the Shadow Wolves' attack were everywhere.
Burned houses still smoldered.
Broken carts lay scattered across the streets.
Warriors carried the wounded to the healer's house while families mourned those they had lost.
Luna stood outside Grandma Rose's cottage with a small leather bag resting at her feet.
Everything she owned fit inside it.
Three dresses.
A worn blanket.
A wooden comb.
A silver necklace Grandma Rose had given her when she was a child.
She looked around the tiny cottage one last time.
"This place has been my whole world," she whispered.
Grandma Rose smiled sadly.
"But the world is much bigger than this little village."
Luna hugged the old woman tightly.
"I don't want to leave you."
Grandma Rose gently stroked her hair.
"You aren't leaving me forever."
"I'll come back."
"I know you will."
She pulled away and placed the silver necklace around Luna's neck.
"I've been saving this for the day you began your true journey."
Luna looked down at the pendant.
It was shaped like a crescent moon with a tiny blue crystal in the center.
"It's beautiful."
"It belonged to your mother."
Luna froze.
"My... mother?"
Grandma Rose nodded.
"She asked me to give it to you when the time was right."
Before Luna could ask another question, Kael's voice interrupted.
"We need to leave."
He stood beside his black horse, already dressed in his traveling cloak.
Behind him, Rowan and twelve Blackwood warriors waited patiently.
Luna quickly wiped away a tear.
"I'll come back for answers."
Grandma Rose smiled.
"When the Moon Goddess decides it's time."
---
The journey began shortly after sunrise.
Luna had never traveled beyond Silver Moon territory.
Everything felt new.
Towering mountains stretched toward the clouds.
Crystal-clear rivers sparkled beneath the morning sun.
Colorful birds flew overhead.
Despite the beauty surrounding them, the Blackwood warriors remained alert.
Every hand rested close to a weapon.
Luna noticed.
"Why is everyone so tense?"
Rowan smiled kindly.
"The forest watches."
She looked around.
"I don't see anyone."
"Exactly."
Kael, riding ahead of the group, spoke without turning around.
"The best hunters are the ones you never see."
Luna quietly nodded.
She was beginning to understand why everyone feared the Rebellious Alpha.
He noticed everything.
---
By midday, the group reached the Whispering Forest.
The trees were enormous.
Their branches blocked most of the sunlight.
Strange whispers drifted through the leaves.
Luna shivered.
"Why is it called the Whispering Forest?"
One of the warriors answered.
"Some say the spirits of ancient wolves still live here."
Another added nervously,
"They warn travelers of danger."
Almost immediately...
A distant howl echoed through the trees.
Every warrior stopped.
Kael slowly raised one hand.
"No one moves."
The forest became silent.
Too silent.
Then—
An arrow flew from the darkness.
Kael caught it in midair.
"Ambush!"
Dozens of masked bandits burst from the trees.
"Attack!"
Steel rang through the forest.
The Blackwood warriors formed a protective circle around Luna.
One bandit charged toward her with a dagger.
Before she could react—
Kael appeared.
With one swift movement, he knocked the attacker unconscious.
"Stay close," he ordered.
"I can help."
"You'll help by staying alive."
Luna frowned.
"I'm not helpless."
Kael looked at her for a brief second.
"I know."
Those two simple words surprised her.
For the first time...
He wasn't treating her like a burden.
---
The battle ended quickly.
The surviving bandits fled into the forest.
Rowan searched one of the unconscious attackers.
His expression darkened.
"Kael."
"What?"
"They aren't ordinary bandits."
He held up a black medallion engraved with a crimson wolf.
Kael recognized it instantly.
"The Shadow Queen."
Luna looked confused.
"You mean Morgana?"
Kael nodded.
"She has spies everywhere."
"So she knew we'd travel this way."
"Yes."
He looked toward the forest.
"And she'll keep coming."
---
As evening approached, the group stopped beside a quiet lake to rest.
Several warriors gathered firewood.
Others prepared food.
Luna sat near the water, watching the sunset reflect across its surface.
Kael quietly walked over.
"You've barely eaten."
"I'm not very hungry."
"You should."
She looked at him.
"You don't seem very hungry either."
He almost smiled.
"Fair point."
For a few moments, neither of them spoke.
Then Luna broke the silence.
"Can I ask you something?"
"You just did."
She laughed softly.
"I mean... a real question."
He nodded.
"Go ahead."
"Why do they call you the Rebellious Alpha?"
Kael skipped a small stone across the lake.
"It wasn't always my choice."
"What do you mean?"
"My father believed every Alpha should obey the Werewolf Council."
"And you didn't?"
"I watched the Council abandon innocent packs during the Great Rogue War."
His voice grew colder.
"They cared more about politics than lives."
"So I left."
"You left the Council?"
"I refused to obey them."
"Weren't you afraid?"
Kael looked at the fading sunset.
"I lost my fear a long time ago."
Luna didn't know what to say.
She could hear sadness hidden beneath his calm voice.
For the first time, she realized that the strongest Alpha she had ever heard about carried wounds no one else could see.
---
Far away...
Inside Blackwood Fortress...
An old servant rushed into the castle library.
"My Lady!"
An elegant woman closed the ancient book she had been reading.
She was Lady Selene Blackwood, Kael's aunt and the keeper of the fortress's secrets.
"What is it?"
"The Alpha is returning."
She smiled gently.
"Good."
"And..."
"He is bringing his mate."
The smile disappeared.
"My nephew... accepted the bond?"
"Not exactly."
Lady Selene walked toward the castle window.
"So..."
"The prophecy truly has begun."
She whispered a quiet prayer to the Moon Goddess.
"Protect them."
"Because the darkness will not wait forever."
---
That same night, hidden among the trees overlooking the camp, a pair of crimson eyes watched silently.
A hooded assassin smiled beneath his mask.
He slowly drew a poisoned arrow from his quiver.
"The Alpha is too strong."
He shifted his aim.
"But the girl..."
"She will be much easier to kill."
He pulled back the bowstring.
The arrow pointed directly at Luna.
The night held its breath.
