Summer camp
Chapter 1.
The castle.
Victoria POV.
I leaned on the bus seat while staring outside through the window, pleased that at least for some weeks, I'll be far away from home. The summer camp was all I needed to get to think everything straight since I had a lot on my plate to decide on. This was my last year in college and I had to think about my future.
Until now, most people would think I had everything planned out, four years in college should have given me the idea already, but it didn't. At home, my mom wanted me to graduate and find work in Hampton, but I wanted a different environment altogether. I wanted to move out of Hampton and explore the world, and Hampton felt like a little crammed space to me.
But still, I was undecided about moving out, my mom was the only relative I have and moving out would leave her on her own and I didn't want that, she had not failed to point it out, but I couldn't help but feel I had to live my life. When our history professor mentioned the summer camp, I knew it would help me think freely, since it would give me the freedom to think decisively.
The bus suddenly jerked, throwing me from my thoughts as I looked up and saw Felix smiling at me, I gave him an equally bright smile, but mine was forced, he had been hitting on me, we had been sexing a couple of times, but that's it, I would rather not be invested emotionally with anyone yet, my studies first, my future next and a man later. The person sitting next to me had fallen asleep, and her head was resting on my shoulder. She was a blonde, and freshman, if I wasn't mistaken.
Tapped her lightly when the driver announced that we had arrived at S't Louis. I peeped through the window and marvelled at how magnificent the castle looked. It was bold on the blue beyond. It stood there as if conjured from the pages of Harry Potter, It was perfect. I imagined unicorns in the courtyard because if those towers could exist, why not? Every stone was even and square, as if those who built were set on perfection, as if they really loved what they made. They were walls made to protect a community, to echo with laughter and be the shelter they needed for the millennia to come.
As the students walked out of the bus, a tour guard was waiting for us, dressed with a khaki shorts and a shirt and rubber shoes. His dirty blonde hair was ruffled as if he had just woken from sleep.
“Welcome to S't Louis castle, as you can see, it's an ordinary ancient building from the outside, but once you get in, you will be surprised of how unique it is” the tour guide said with a wide smile that exposed his brown teeth.
After a lengthy harangue about the history of the man who built the castle that I didn't bother listening, the tour began. The guide led us into a large hall, which had mosaics windows and cobblestone floors, something resembling a throne was spotted at the furthest part of the hall, it was made of a hard metal, something resembling brass.
“This is the great hall where King Louis made all the important decision concerning francia before it was changed to France” the guide said as the students explored the hall. He later took us around the rest of the castle and truly to his words, there was more on the inside than one could think of, there was a chapel, few chambers, orchards, vineyards, and he took us to all of it except one.
He warned us of going near the king's chamber, claiming that it had never been explored for years. After the tour was over, we traveled east of S’t Louis to the designated camp location not far from the castle. It was a nice place with a good environment for relaxing. We set our tents and prepared for the night.
The camp master lighted a big fire at the center of the camp and instructed us to collect firewood from the forest. Later, on we sat around the fire as the students begun making fun of each other while telling scary stories, most of which were made up. Everything would have gone okay if it wasn't for what happened next, as one would expect, not everyone is inclined to follow rules, and so, two students decided not to listen to the tour guide.
After sleeping, we were woken up by screams which were coming from the castle, everyone immediately rushed towards the castle, we arrived to find the most horrifying sight that sent chills allover our spine. Bianca was trembling like someone who had been electrocution. The camp master tried to calm down, but she lifted her finger, still trembling and pointed towards the king's chamber.
Everyone exchanged looks, I gulped. Possible theories of what was wrong filled my mind.
“Bianca, can you please tell us what's wrong ?” The camp master asked.
“Michael…” Was all she said.
Michael was her boyfriend and the two were known for being slab heads with rules. The camp master requested for two boys from our lot to help him check what was wrong with Michael, he seemed shaken since there was a myth sorounding the king's chamber. He had narrated to us during the story telling around the fire, one of which claimed about vampires living there; the original king Louis was a vampire who used another man to rule France, since his time, no one would enter the king's chamber except the puppet king; hence it's name 'the kings chamber'.
Of course, vampires were just a myth, right? Well, that's what I used to think until I became one myself.
Felix and another boy named Hans escorted the camp master into the king's chamber, and the rest of us waited with bated breath. Silence lingered all-over the castle, and the tension was so thick that it could be sliced with a knife. As I looked around, above the balcony to the lounge of the great hall, stood a man, looking at us with a smirk on his face.
Without thinking twice, I left out a blood-curdling scream that was enough to make anyone deaf, then, a mild wind blew and all the doors to the castle closed themselves. Everyone panicked, the girls begun screaming while the men tried to break the doors. Moments later, the men managed to open the doors and the men who went to retrieve Michael returned with him as fine as a new pin, and, he had a smirk on his face, which made the attention to shift to me and Bianca.
Michael and Bianca had invaded the king's chamber to have s*x since Bianca seemed to like the idea of being the first to do it, she had snapped shots for i********: and would have posted it if Michael hadn't decided to play a prank on him. That was one way to get punished, and I had been dragged into it for screaming, but I could have bet that I saw a man, and it wasn't Michael, nor anyone from the camp.
The camp master was having none of it, and he made the three of us to collect firewood for the rest of the camp, Bianca scowled at Michael who followed her trying to laugh it off as if it were the best prank of the century, I rolled my eyes and followed them to fulfill my punishment, but couldn't get my mind off the man from the castle.
As I collected pieces of woods, I felt as if there was someone watching me, but again I thought it could be paranoia, but I had begun to develop doubts about coming here, there was this feeling of déjà vu creeping through the whole place, I strolled far from the camp until I found a creek and couldn't hide the smile on my lips. It had been long since i skinny-dipped and since I was alone, that was what I was going to do.
I quickly striped down, remaining only with my red underwear, I hide my clothes by covering it with the dried leaves on the forest floor where I had placed my bundle of woods, I closed my eyes shutting my eyes while a wide smile tugged on my lips, then, I jumped on the water.
I spent about thirty seconds underwater before emerging on the surface and there, among the trees, almost shrouded from vision, was the same man who I had seen on the castle and in a blink of an eye, he wasn't there. It was as if he were a fragment of my imagination
