Alicia’s POV
Pregnant. That word kept ringing in my head. I stared at the doctor, waiting for him to tell me he had made a mistake. He didn’t.
I looked down at my hands, they were trembling, I couldn’t understand how something this small could suddenly make everything feel so much bigger.
I couldn’t think straight, a lot went through my mind at the same time. My future, my grandmother, David, the contract, everything.
“How far along?” I asked
“We’ll need future tests to know that accurately.”
“Can you tell me approximately?”
“Based on the results I’ll say one month or possibly two.”
My mind immediately went back to that night at the hotel, the stranger, the morning I left without knowing his name, the only difference now is hes no longer a stranger. Hes David Cross, my husband, at least technically.
My fingers curled up in my bed sheet.
“Oh my God.”
The doctor just stared at me carefully
“Is there anyone you’ll like to call?”
I shocked my head immediately.
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
I wasn’t ready, I wasn’t ready to tell anyone, not my grandmother, not David, not anyone.Tge contract was meant to solve my problems.instead i just discovered a new one. A baby, my baby, David’s baby. I closed my eyes. How was I supposed to tell him?.
The doctor stood there watching me.
“We will run another scan and arrange an appointment for you to come back regularly, but for now you need to rest.”
I nodded.
“Thank you”
He walked towards the door.
“Doctor?” I called out.
He stopped.
“Yes?”
“Please..”
My voice cracked.
“Don’t tell anyone yet.”
He nodded.
“Your information is private.”
Then he stepped outside. I rested back on the bed and stared at the ceiling.for the first time in a long time i didnt know what to do.
Outside the room, footsteps slowly faded away. But one person didn’t leave.
The man who had been following Alicia from the street remained close to the door.he had heard enough.
He pulled his phone from his pocket, for several seconds, he stared at the screen, then he typed.
She’s pregnant.
He hesitated, then pressed the send button.
Unaware of what was going on outside my room.
I was still staring at the ceiling when my phone began ringing. David. My heart skipped a beat, why was he calling? I stared at his name on my screen. For a moment, I considered ignoring it. But I answered.
“Hello?”
“Alicia.”
His voice was calm, too calm.
“Where are you?”
I looked around.
“At the hospital”
There was silence.
“What happened?”
“I fainted”.
His voice immediately changed.
“You what?”
“Im okay, I just got dizzy and passed out, that’s all.”
“Where exactly are you?”
I hesitated.
“Ark mission”
“I’ll be there.”
My eyes widened.
“No!”
“What?”
“You don’t have to come.”
“I wasn’t asking.”
“David-“
The call ended, I stared at my phone. Typical David, always deciding things for others.I slowly sat up, then a sudden urge to throw up hit me, I covered my mouth and ran to the bathroom.
A few moments later I returned to the bed, tired. I place my hands over my stomach, there was nothing to feel, nothing visible. Yet somehow everything had changed.
“How am I going to do this?” I whispered.
The door opened, I looked up to see David walking in, his tie slightly loosened and his usually calm expression had disappeared. He looked worried. We locked eyes.
“What happened?”
“Im fine”
“Are you lying to me?”
I looked away.
“Im just tired”
He pulled a chair towards the bed and sat, for several seconds non of us spoke a word.
“You’re shaking.”
“Im okay”
He studied me, something about his expression made my chest tighten.
“Alicia”
“What?”
“Is there something you are not telling me?”
My heart stopped, I looked at him, for one second I thought I was going to tell him. But then I remembered everything. The contract, his family, my grandmother.
The fear that if he found out he was going to terminate the contract and my grandmother won’t get her treatment.
“I…”
My voice disappeared. David leaned closer.
“What? Speak up.”
I swallowed.
“I’m just scared.”
“Of what?”
I looked away. But then he said something I wasn't expecting.
“You don’t have to face everything yourself.”
I looked back at him, for a moment I almost thought it was real. But then I remembered it’s all part of the contract. I couldn’t speak I didn’t know what to say
Across the city, her phone lit up, she got a message.
She's pregnant
Her smile slowly disappeared. She opened David’s photo on her phone and stared at it.
“You’re not going to make a fool of me again.” She whispered to herself as her fingers tightened around her phone.
