Chapter 3: David Cross

602 Words
Alicia’s POV Two weeks later,I stood outside the cross corporation with sweaty palms. I looked at the tall glass building. This place was intimidating, Everything about it screamed money, power, and success. Exactly what I needed. I took a deep breath and walked inside. The receptionist directed me upstairs, I sat outside the interview room, trying not to look nervous. My phone rang, The hospital. My heart immediately skipped a beat. I answered. “Hello?” It was the nurse. My grandmother's condition didn’t get worse, but there were additional tests that had to be done. Additional tests meant additional money. Of course. I thanked her and ended the call. I closed my eyes. “Please”,I whispered. “Just let me get this job.” A door opened. “Miss Dawson?” I stood immediately. “Yes?” “You can go in now” I straightened my jacket and walked into the room. The man sitting behind the desk didn’t look up immediately “Have a seat” I sat. He continued reading my resume. “You’re qualified” For a split second his voice sounded a little bit familiar, but I brushed every thought aside and focused on what I came for. The job. “Thank you.” “You have an excellent reference.” “Thank you.” He finally looked up. My heart dropped. I knew those eyes, I knew that face, I knew that voice. The stranger from that hotel, The man from that night. He stared at me. I prayed for the ground to open up and swallow me in, I almost wanted to run away, but I couldn’t move. For the first time since I walked in the room, his expression changed. Recognition, Shock. Then something colder. His eyes narrowed. “Alicia Dawson.” Hearing my name in his voice made my stomach twist. I swallowed. “David?” He leaned back in his chair. “So you remembered.” He said with a raised eyebrow and a deadly expression on his face. How could I forget?. I wanted to disappear. Instead i forced myself to sit straight. “You’re the CEO” “And you’re applying for a position in my company.” “Yes.” His gaze remained placed on me. Neither of us spoke. The silence was unbearable. Finally, he closed my resume. “Why didn’t you tell me who you were?” I frowned. “You didn’t exactly ask.” His expression changed again. Annoyance, Maybe amusement. I couldn’t tell. “This interview is over.” My stomach twisted. “What?” “You can leave.” I stood slowly. “Mr cross—“ “David” I stopped. He looked at me. “Call me David.” I didn’t know why that somehow made the situation worse. I grabbed my bag. “Alicia” I stopped. I turned back to look at him, David was watching me. “You’re not getting this job” My chest tightened. Of course. Why would he hire me after what happened?.I nodded. “Understood.” I walked out. I hadn’t even reached the elevator when my phone rang. It was the hospital. I answered immediately. “Hello?” The nurse’s voice was different this time. More serious. My heart began pounding. “Alicia, we need you to come back to the hospital immediately .” “Why?” There was a pause. I could hear the silence on the other end, I was already assuming the worst in my head. “Your grandmother’s condition has changed.” Everything inside me went still.
