Night of The Full Moon
It was the night of the full moon. The stars hung above the clouds like small lanterns burning. The clouds slowly drift pass the bright moon as it beams down on the dimly lit streets. The only sounds that can be heard are the owls hooting high up in the trees. Everything was calm as the families all slept silently and peacefully. All except one person.
Her name is Darcy Cromwell. She has skin like a porcelain doll. Her long ,chestnut brown hair is always perfectly straight. Darcy has the most rosiest cheeks you have ever seen. She lies awake most nights wondering about her future and what is yet to come. She leaves her silky, red curtains open so the beautiful moon can shine through into her bedroom, lighting up every corner. Darcy can't help but feel a connection with the moon. The connection is so strong she can be found gazing up at the night sky when the moon appears. She is hypnotized whenever she locks her hazel green eyes on it. She feels a strong rush of power surge through her body. It almost feels as though she doesn't belong in this world or in this time.
Darcy lays on her bed staring out the window, she can't sleep. She sits up and sighs. Why can't I sleep!? She thinks to herself whilst she ponders about her room, walking back and forth. She checks the old antique clock hanging on her wall. It's just gone three am. It's always roughly this time that she wakes up. Whenever the moon is at its fullest she finds it hard to get back to sleep. After she's finished pacing her bedroom she decides to head downstairs for a snack as her stomach is growling at her. She tries to open her door quietly but it keeps on squeaking. She makes her way across the landing towards the spiral staircase. One step at a time trying not to step on the creaky floorboards. She doesn't want to wake her little sister Alice or her mother Elizabeth. There is a massive window right opposite the stairs. As there are no curtains covering it ,the moon shines through freely lighting up the stairs. In every corner of the landing darkness fills the spaces in every nook and cranny. The only light is from the magical, mysterious moon which creates a path of light for Darcy. It guides her the way down the stairs into the kitchen.
As she enters the pitch black kitchen she heard something crashing to floor. Darcy jumps out of her skin. She quickly turns around to see where the noise came from. She sees nothing but darkness. Then she realised it came from where the dusty piano is by the bottom of the stairs. The piano belonged to her grandfather who sadly passed away a few years ago. Her heart starts to pound faster and faster. Her palms start to get sweaty. What on earth was that!? She thought to herself scanning the area. Suddenly she was startled by the piano keys being pressed. The sound of the piano echoed through the hall and up the stairs.Darcy froze in fear. Should she hide? Should she run? Scream? Before she can even think or move for that matter she notices something glowing right in front of her. It looks like two glowing eyes piercing right through her. She slowly takes a step back ready to run for it. Then all of a sudden she hears a cat meow from within the shadows.
A cat as black as night jumps out in front of her. Darcy gasps. A cat with the longest whiskers is peering up at her licking its lips. " Omg, Salem you silly cat. You scared me half to the death!" Darcy whispers to him picking the cat up. Salem is the Cromwell's beloved family cat. He's always up to mischief. He purrs at Darcy rubbing his head on hers. "Ok,ok that's enough now Salem. You nearly woke the whole house! " she says putting him down. He always knows that when she comes downstairs he can get a snack as Darcy just can't say no to his cute little face.
After raiding the cupboards and the fridge, Darcey finally found a snack she could feast on. She opened the galaxy bar wrapper ever so slowly trying not to make a sound. Once fully opened she broke a piece of chocolate of and shoved it into her mouth. She savoured every moment whilst the chocolate melted on her tongue. The mouthwatering sweet taste made her thirsty. She headed for the cupboard to get a glass out and filled it half full with cold water from the tap. She gulped the water down. Salem was looking at her from across the room. He turned his nose up in disgust as Darcy didn't give him any treats so he decided to go back to the piano where he had made his bed.
Darcy then rinsed her glass and stacked it on the draining board. She yawned. She was now starting to feel sleepy. She thought she best head back to her room and get some sleep before school tomorrow. As she turnt the kitchen light off she was stopped in her tracks by what sounded like something moving behind her. After thinking it was Salem she turnt around ready to pick him up.
But Salem was not there. She heard the same noise again so she quickly switched the light back on. She called out for Salem but he was nowhere to be seen. Looking around the room trying to see what had moved she decided it was because she was tired and was just hearing things. But then all of a sudden Darcy saw the glass she just used slide across the kitchen counter.
" ARRGGHHH!!" Darcy screamed out loud. Suddenly in a blink of an eye the glass had smashed to the floor as if somebody knocked it of the counter. Darcy let out an almighty scream that shook the whole house. Before she knew it her little sister Alice was running down the stairs followed by her mother Elizabeth.
" What on Earth is going on down here!? " her mother said in a panic. She rushed over to the shaken Darcy.
"Are you alright love? " her mother questioned her making sure she hadn't hurt herself.
" Er, Errm..." Darcy couldn't believe what just happened she could barely get a word out.
" Was you sleep walking or something Darcy?" her little sister Alice asked her looking at the glass on the floor that is now shattered into a tiny million little pieces. Her mum got out the dustpan and brush and started to sweep the glass up.
"What!! No off course not " Darcy explains, " I...I just came down for a glass of water and then the glass was on the side but I put it on the draining board then it just flew off the counter all by itself!".
Darcy's hands were still shaking from what just happened. Her mother and sister gave each other a look as if to say there's no way in hell things move on their own. " I think your just tired darling and accidently knocked it off. But its fine its all cleaned up now " her mum said calmly to her. She looked straight at her mum with her mouth wide open like a fish.
" Mum I saw that glass move all on its own and I was nowhere near it, I swear! " Darcy cried trying to make them believe her. Alice yawned which made Darcy yawn even louder.
" Look I think your just tired ,ok? You both are so let's all head back up to bed. It was nothing. Accidents happen" , Elizabeth said giving Darcy a hug to assure her. Darcy rubbed her eyes and yawned again.
" Hmm yeah ok, fine Goodnight" she mumbled heading towards the stairs. Her mother turnt the lights off downstairs and gave Alice a hug goodnight to before crawling back into her bed again.
It was now half past three in the morning and the Cromwell household was wide awake. Darcy kept thinking about what just happened as she tossed and turned. Did she really imagine it? Did she accidentally knock it off the kitchen counter? Either way she knows she has to try and forget about it and get to sleep. She rolled over onto her side and gazed out her bedroom window. The moon was now hiding behind a big group off clouds. The weather seemed to changed and Darcy could smell rain in the air. Even Though it was still warm she knew any minute now the rain will come crashing down from the clouds. She crept out off bed to go close her window slightly as she didnt want the rain coming in and ruining her curtains. As she did she saw a tiny raindrop fall onto her bedroom window and slide down slowly. Then along came another raindrop which was then followed by more.
Darcy watched them slide down. It looked like the raindrops were having a race to see who who gets to the bottom first. Darcy loved the sound of the rain especially when it hits the windows. There is just something so calming and relaxing about it. It helped Darcy to fall asleep. Before she knew it her eyes grew heavy and she was in a deep sleep dreaming.
In the next room her little Sister Alice Cromwell laid. She is all tucked up in her warm, comfy bed with the duvet right up to her chin. Her knees tucked into her chest like she was rolled into a ball. Alice is two years younger than Darcy and is quit the troublesome teen. She has a lot of friends who envy her. Alice has long mousy brown hair with streaks off blonde in. She has the similarities of rapunzel but she doesn't have hair quit as long. Only if she did,Alice's boyfriend Dennis would be at her bedroom window in a heartbeat trying to climb up her hair. This is another reason why the girls at school envy her as she is with the cutest boy in school.
He has thick curly and brown hair. Along with the most bluest eyes in the world that are bluer than the deep sea. Alice is madly, deeply and truly in love with Dennis. They have been together nearly a year now. He is like her prince charming who she dreams about every night. They are perfect for each other and nothing can get in their way apart from one thing...if her mother will approve of him. She thinks and thinks about if she will like him. She has to arrange a time for him to meet her but keeps delaying it. The words go around and around in her mind. Will she like him? Will he like her? Can I stay with him if she hates him? She is thinking so hard she feels like her mind is going to explode. She turns over onto her back and stares at the ceiling. She also thinks about what happened with Darcy but her mind switches back to Dennis.
All this thinking is giving her a headache and she has to be up for school in the morning. There is no way she is ever going to sleep tonight with this constant worry on her mind. She turns to look at her clock sitting on her shabby chic bedside table. It is now nearly half past four. She lets out a huge sigh and decides to go to sleep. She punches her pillows to make them poofier so she can lay her head down to sleep. It'll soon be morning then she can see Dennis again. They have History together tomorrow she cannot wait. There is a history project due next week and they have partnered up together. Alice finds herself yawing and she slowly shuts her sleepy green eyes and falls fast asleep.
The grandfather clock in the hall strikes five. An hour and a half has passed since Darcy let out an almighty scream. Her mother Elizabeth is still wide awake. She is worried about what happened in the kitchen. Darcy has never had nightmares before. Elizabeth thinks she was sleep walking but she cannot prove it. Elizabeth's concerns urge her to go check on Darcy as she slept peacefully. She tiptoed across the hall to her bedroom. She then carefully twists the door knob to poke her head through.
Elizabeth can see her eldest daughter dreaming. She stops and stares for awhile before returning back to her own bedroom. She closes her bedroom door and takes a seat at her dressing room table. Elizabeth hopes this does not happen again. Whilst gazing up at her reflection in her antique mirror , she brushes her long black hair. After she gets rid of the knot she decides to head for her bed. She takes off her slippers and slides under her red velvet duvet. She can hear the sound of the birds awaking from their sleep ready to start their day. Elizabeth closes her eyes and hopes this was just a one off with Darcy.
