Raymond approached, looking at Serena with a complex expression. After a few seconds of silence, he finally spoke, "How's your injury?"
Hearing his somewhat concerned words, Serena felt a lump in her throat and an unexpected wave of emotion in her heart, but she replied calmly, "It's fine."
She paused, then looked up at Raymond. "I'll contact a lawyer to draft the divorce agreement later, and we'll get the procedures done as soon as possible."
Raymond looked at Serena, whose eyes were red and swollen and face pale, yet still trying to appear strong, and felt an unexpected tenderness.
He frowned slightly and said, "We don't have to get divorced."
Serena suddenly looked up, her eyes full of surprise.
But Raymond's next words brought her back to reality.
He spoke confidently, "The position of Mrs. Scott can be yours, but my love will only be for Irene. You should understand that."
Serena looked at his self-assured demeanor and suddenly laughed, her laughter laced with sarcasm. "Save it."
"I, Serena, may not be exceptional, but I'm not so despicable as to steal someone else's man, nor do I care for a loveless marriage. I will step back and wish you both a happy life together."
Raymond was taken aback by her decisiveness, and his expression froze for a moment, his face instantly darkening. "Fine! If you regret it, don't come back crying and begging like you did before!"
Serena ignored him and continued to organize her documents.
Just then, Irene walked in. "Serena, I'm here to discuss work with you. Is now a good time?"
Before Serena could respond, an assistant rushed in. "Ms. Williams! There's a problem with the steel bars at the construction site in the east of the city, and the construction team has stopped working!"
Serena felt a pang of anxiety. This project was a key one she had been overseeing for over half a year, and a problem with the steel bars was no small matter.
Even though she had decided to resign and go abroad, this was a project she had personally pushed forward, and it concerned the safety of future residents, so no mistakes could be allowed.
She immediately stood up and grabbed her coat. "I'm going to the site."
"I'll go too!" Irene looked at Raymond with anticipation. "It's a great chance to learn from Serena how to handle emergencies."
Raymond said without hesitation, "I'll go with you. The construction site is messy and unsafe."
Serena paused, clenched her coat, and quickly walked out.
When they arrived at the construction site, the scorching sun made the ground blisteringly hot.
Raymond held an umbrella the whole time, mostly shading Irene's head. He constantly asked her in a low voice if she was hot, if she wanted to wait in the shade nearby, even warned her to be careful not to get mud on her cuffs.
Serena watched the scene, feeling as if needles were pricking her eyes.
She remembered when she first joined the company and visited construction sites, her back peeling from the summer sun, crying to Raymond at night, who merely glanced at her and said, "If you can't endure this, how can you stand firm in your career?"
Back then, she thought she wasn't strong enough. Now she understood it was simply because he didn't love her, and even a word of concern was too much.
After finally agreeing on the rebar replacement plan with the construction team, they prepared to head back.
As they walked under a newly topped-off building, a strange creaking sound came from above. Chunks of cement began raining down.
Before Serena could react, a slab of concrete half her size slammed into her back.
Agonizing pain spread throughout her body as she lay on the ground, her back pinned down, and even breathing was excruciating.
She struggled to lift her head and saw Raymond tightly shielding Irene as they ran out.
Serena used all her strength to shout, "Raymond! Save me!"
Raymond whirled around, seeing her covered in blood, his heart clenched, and he instinctively took two steps toward Serena.
