I woke up amidst all the chaos; the sirens were so loud and deafening. Firefighters and doctors ran around like their lives depended on it.
My head was pounding; I was disoriented and confused. I sat up gently from the ground, looked around, and my eyes opened wide as I saw all the lifeless bodies lying around me. My family: my mother, my father, and my beautiful 16-year-old sister, Jasmine who had just finished high school, and my 13-year-old brother Kelvin, all of them covered in blood.
FLASHBACK
A few hours ago, we had just finished celebrating my sister’s high school graduation. My family and I went to a classic restaurant in the city to celebrate my sister’s graduation and my engagement with the love of my life Alex.
We sat around the table, Mom was beaming with joy and Dad looked so pleased but he tried to play it cool, and Jasmine was practically bouncing in her seat.
“So Mara, tell us more about the engagement,” Mom said, passing me the bowl of soup. “ How did he propose?”
I smiled, taking a sip of my soup. “So, he took me to that spot on the beach where we had our first date, and trust me when I say it was perfect, Mom.”
Jasmine squealed. “Aww, so romantic.”
Dad cleared his throat. “And the wedding plans?”
“Humm, we are thinking about next year, maybe December. We are thinking of having a small intimate beach wedding.”
Mom nodded, “perfect”
“Jasmine, congratulations on your graduation too, my princess,” Dad said, putting a piece of meat on my sister's plate.
“Thank you daddy,” Jasmine said
“I’m so proud of you girls”, my mom said smiling
“Thanks mom”, I said with a broad smile
“And I’m super excited to be celebrating with all of you. I love you all” Jasmine replied laughing
“Sis, can I be your bridesmaid” Jasmine asked blinking playfully
“Of course, silly! You are my sister!” I said, smiling.
We left the restaurant still buzzing from the celebratory dinner. We piled into the car and headed home, Though the night was dark, the streets were well lit and as we drove home, we laughed and talked about our plans. The wedding theme and the colour they want to choose.
“I think blush pink and gold is perfect” I suggested
“Humm, Classic! Jasmine said, nodding her head in agreement.
We both laughed loudly.
Suddenly, Bang!!! There was a loud crunch. A vehicle slammed into our car. Our car somersaulted multiple times and everyone was covered in blood. I wanted to call for help but my voice was frozen. That’s when I heard footsteps crunching on broken glass. A figure appeared, pistol in one hand and a cigarette hanging between his fingers. I couldn’t see his face, just his legs and his hand. Then everything went blank.
Back To The Crash
The memory of everything flashed back in my head, I wanted to scream but was too scared and weak to say a word let alone screaming. One of the medics noticed me move and rushed to my side.
“We got one alive!’ he called out, his voice loud and clear among the chaos.
And immediately, other medical personnel swarmed around me, checking my vitals and shining lights in my eyes.
My gaze was dazed and unfocused. I tried to speak but my voice was barely a whisper. “You’re going to be ok, we’re going to get you out of here ok” The medic said, his voice gentle and with empathy.
The sound of sirens, and a beeping machine filled the air. My world went blurry again, but I felt the stretcher beneath me.
As they wheeled me into the ambulance, the flashing light went across the crowd, I saw a face I never expected to see, my uncle, his eyes were fixed on me with a look that sent a chill through my spine. He was smiling with cruelty. He was supposed to be out of the country. For a moment, I thought I was hallucinating. But no, it was him. At that moment, I remembered the man with a pistol also and I thought “Maybe, just maybe, this accident was actually not a normal accident but a planned one”.
