The night the team won
CASEY
"Hurry up, will you?"
My friend glared at me for a split second before directing her attention back to the mirror on her night-stand. I rolled my eyes back at her, even though I knew she couldn’t see me properly from where I was sitting at the edge of her bed.
“I’m literally ready,” I mumbled to myself. “You’re doing too much.”
“Maybe you’re not doing enough,” she said, not bothering to even look at me.
Her room was already in chaos with the clothes scattered on the floor and the faint scent of perfume that lingered everywhere.
“I really don’t want to miss their match,” I pouted, still aware that she couldn’t see me.
She adjusted her eyeliner and finally turned to look at me. She gave me a knowing smile as she turned back to the mirror and got started on her lipliner.
“I really want to watch the match,” I insisted.
“Girl, we both know you know nothing about hockey. You only want some of that vitamin D.”
My face immediately got heated. “It’s an opportunity.”
“Man’s a w***e, and you’re counting on that. That’s why you dress like that every time we go to a game.”
I lowered my head and tried to hide the blush forming on my cheeks.
“I’m not doing it all for him.”
“Hmm hmm.”
She didn’t sound convinced, probably because she knew the truth. Everyone at school knew the truth.
Gregory Thorne was the transfer student who mysteriously transferred in the middle of the second semester. No one knew where he came from, but he somehow became the center of gossip. A talented hockey player with a great future ahead of him.
It also helped that he was insanely attractive.
In just a month, he had slept his way through the entire cheerleading team, my friend included.
“Okay, I’m done,” Chloe stood up abruptly, pulling me away from my thoughts. “Let’s go.”
I grabbed my jacket from her bed and followed her out the door, while also being careful not to step on any of her clothes on the floor. Knowing Chloe, she’d just push everything into her wardrobe without washing a single cloth.
“Tell me how it was with him again,” I said as I enter the passenger seat of her car.
Chloe sighed as she closed my door and got in the driver’s seat. I stared at her expectantly, waiting for an answer. Since she hooked up with Gregory a few weeks after he transferred, I’d asked about it like once every two days.
And she was far from fed up with talking about it. Which was why she was desperately trying to get me to hook up with him too.
Maybe then I’d shut up.
The game was over by the time we got to the arena.
The parking lot was already half empty but the few people that were around carried that energy sport crowds leave behind.
Chloe killed the engine and turned to me.
“We’re late.”
Some cheerleader she was.
I glared at the glowing sign above the arena door which read: HOME WIN.
Of course they won, they always win.
“Guess we should go to the party now.” She revved the car back into life and we left the arena.
It was tradition to have a party every night our team plays, whether or not we win. But since Gregory transferred, we’ve not had a single loss.
That’s how good the guy was.
When we got to the frat house, the party was already in full swing and you could hear music blasting from outside.
Chloe and I stepped out of the car and she let out a whistle as she looked at me.
“Girl, you look scrumptious.”
We went into the house and it was packed with people, all sorts of people that I would never interact with if I didn’t have a friend like Chloe. Suddenly, coming here didn’t seem like such a good idea.
Chloe held my hand and gave it a squeeze.
“You always get cold feet when we get here. Calm down.”
We made our way to the minibar and drank as we waited. We always did this.
Well, not always like this. I would accompany Chloe to a game where she would cheer and we’d attend the afterparty together. Despite her many other cool friends that try to steal her away from me, she always chooses to stay with me.
About an hour after we started drinking, I saw Gregory enter with a girl linked to his arm.
It was ridiculous, really. The guy had gone through half the female population on campus and yet seeing him with a girl still affected me.
“Uh oh,” Chloe said beside me. “Want me to get rid of her?”
I bit my bottom lip. Was my expression that readable?
When I didn’t answer, Chloe took my silence as an answer and approached Gregory and the girl, flashing her sweet smile.
I could see the girl getting increasingly frustrated as she realized Chloe was trying to steal Gregory away but Gregory himself looked amused.
Chloe pointed in my direction and he followed her hand, locking gazes with me for like a millisecond before I broke contact.
What the f**k was she telling them?
It took me a while to look in their direction again but once I did, I noticed that they were coming in my direction. And Gregory had ditched the girl he was with. She looked displeased. In fact, I think she was more than ready to commit a felony and I couldn’t blame her. I would be fuming if I was in her shoes.
Chloe smiled and waved at me.
So I turned around to leave, only to realize that it was a dead end. Just the minibar and walls.
I was trapped.
“Hey,” he said.
Yes, I recognize his voice. Sue me.
I didn’t turn around, I was too panicked to do anything. Chloe, however, didn’t seem to care. She turned me herself so I was facing a now smiling Gregory.
“This is my friend, Casey.”
“Mna”
Yeah, I don’t know what that was either, but it was a sound that came out of my mouth.
“So,” he was still grinning. “I was told you wanted to test me out.”
