POV: Emery
I feel so strange being in this room. The room Elder Luna Renee put me in is bigger than I'm used to. I could probably fit my entire house inside this room. I didn't even have a bedroom. I slept in the living room on the couch, and my parents slept in the only bedroom in the house. Suffice it to say my house was about the size of a large shed.
Most omega housing is like that; in the New Moon Pack, it was that way. It’s like they made just enough room for us. No Omega would dare challenge this. It’s just the way it is in our world, even if some of us don’t like it.
Someone knocks on the door as I’m brushing my hair. They only knock once before just barging in. I’m glad I have clothes on. “Good morning.” Devon greets me. “Hi,” I say back.
“How’d you sleep?” He asks. “Fine.” I lie. My mind was racing with too many thoughts to sleep. It was mainly on my mates. They didn’t acknowledge me as their mate once. I feel so rejected. They acted as if they wanted nothing to do with me.
Pain suddenly shoots through my mouth and heart. I gasp from the strength of the pain. My hand instantly goes to my heart. Sierra whimpers and curls into a ball.
They really don’t want me. This is a mate’s betrayal pain. One of them is kissing some other girl. The thought sickens me. “Are you ok?” Devon asks, looking concerned
“Yeah, I’m fine,” I answer through a broken sob. “Are you sure? You look to be in pain.” Devon doesn’t believe me. “It doesn’t matter.” There’s nothing he can do. My mates refuse to acknowledge the fact I’m their mate. It makes sense now, though, why I’m the one who can break their curse.
A fated mate can help heal almost anything for their mate. Werewolves rely on their mates. It’s natural for us. Wolves have been known to go insane without their mate.
“Yes, it does. You can trust me, Emery.” Devon assures me. “Promise not to tell anyone?” I ask. I believe him about trusting him and I do. “Cross my heart and hope to die.” He gives me a reassuring smile.
“I met my mates and one of them is kissing some other girl right now,” I admit. “Oh…” Devon looks down with his eyebrows scunched together. “Um, Emery, you said they. Are my brothers your mates?” Realization dawned on his expression. I simply nod in confirmation.
“Oh, Emery, I am so sorry. I had no idea. The curse prevents them from knowing who their mate is. They’re incapable of feeling the mate bond right now.” Devon explains.
So it’s not me? It’s them? Talk about a cliché. “There’s a chance! We can win them over. In a year, they will know and accept us!” Sierra’s ears perk up hearing the news. She’s found herself with a newfound glimmer of hope for her mates.
“You can’t tell them. They would never believe me.” I all but beg them. “I know. I will warn you, they have slept around a lot. I’d watch out for Vivian and Aspen.” Sierra’s growl slips through my lips.
I quickly cover my mouth in embarrassment. “Sorry.” I apologize quickly. Devon chuckles. “Don’t be. I can see your wolf is ready for the fight.”
“Sierra, her name is Sierra. She has an even bigger attitude than I do.” I say. “Oh, well, it’s nice to meet you, Sierra,” Devon says. “It’s me who should be thanking you for finally getting Emery away. She has refused to listen to me.” Sierra speaks through me.
Devon looks at me in curiosity. I groan in annoyance. Why the hell did she have to say that? Luckily, he doesn’t ask about it. I’m not sure I’m ready for anyone here to know about my home life.
“We should get going. Grayson and Tristin will be waiting for us by now. You three have a busy day ahead of you.” Devon leads me to my unwitting mates.
We enter what looks to be a private dining room. Both my mates sit at the table with an unfamiliar man. “Sit,” Tristin says. “Good luck.” Devon leaves me alone with the three men. I sit down at the table next to Tristin, across from the unknown man.
“This is Malcolm Wyatt, our Delta and lawyer.” Tristin introduces. Deltas generally handle most legal affairs in a pack. They’re the pack’s security. You would think that would be the Gamma’s job, but no. The Gamma is the top warrior and is responsible for training all the Zetas. He makes sure they are all at their best.
The Delta handles all the policing of the pack. The Beta and second in command is the pack enforcer. His job is to keep his eyes on the pack and make sure things are in order.
“You can call me Wyatt, though.” The delta says. “Hi.” I give him a shy wave. Grayson places a plate of pancakes with a side of bacon, eggs, and strawberries in front of me. “Eat.” He simply says.
I nod and eat the food as told. They eat as well. “Emery, tell me what your goals are in all of this?” Tristin asks. I look at him confused. “Goals?” What does he mean?
“Yes, goals. What’s in it for you? What are you looking for out of this?” He asks. “Don’t worry, you don’t have to worry about me falling in love or anything if that’s what you’re worried about. You’ll have your curse broken and I’ll be out of your hair in no time.” I answer.
I could tell them about my family, but honestly, it’s embarrassing. I never made any friends because of them. My whole life I’ve had to take care of them. I remember once when I was five years old. I walked in on my mom passed out from shooting up heroin. I was so scared. She wouldn’t wake up. I had to grow up fast. I was never allowed to be a child.
Everything I’m doing right now is for my family. “What happens when, at the end of the year and our mates finally accept us?” Sierra questions. “I’m not ready to think about that.” I don’t even know if they will accept us. The one thing I know for sure is, I’ll know exactly how my mates feel about us without the mate bond clouding their feelings. If they do fall for me, I’ll know it’s real.
“Falling in love would be a ridiculous thing to go and do now, wouldn’t it. Let’s remember the goal here and not let any silly feeling you may develop get in the way.” Grayson says. I snort. “Trust me, the only person I could ever love is my mate. You should be the one who needs to be careful.” I can’t help but talk back to them. They make me want to argue back.
Grayson scoffs. “Don’t be so full of yourself, little dove. You’re the one who should be grateful for the practice, which you clearly need more of. You’re such a bad kisser.” Grayson smirks.
I try to hide the whirlwind of emotions that run through me. That was my first kiss.
“Enough, let’s get to the business at hand, yeah? Emery, we’d like to discuss the terms of the contract with you. If you would like to add or negotiate anything, please, speak up.” Tristin says as if playing peacekeeper.
Wyatt passes me a stack of papers stapled together. “I’m not here for just them, I’m here for you too. However, you should remember my first priority is the pack, so no outrageous requests.” Wyatt informs me.
“We do have some rules we’d like you to follow,” Grayson says in a more professional voice, like he’s in a business meeting. “Okay.” I motion my hand for them to continue and take a bite of the bacon from my plate, pushing the strawberries to the side.
“You don’t like strawberries?” Tristin asks. “Allergic,” I answer. “Oh, I am so sorry, I had no idea. I’ll have to keep that in mind.” He apologizes.
“Anyway, rule number one, 11 p.m. curfew. You are to be with us by this time.” Grayson gets straight to the point. This is reasonable and understandable. I agree to this rule. I’ve never been one for being out late anyway.
“Two isn’t really a rule but a standard. We expect you to act appropriately in public appearances. Being our wife would put you in a Luna position. We expect you to act accordingly.” Tristin says. Also understandable and very expected. Alphas and Lunas are held to high standards.
“You are not to date anyone or to be seen with anyone in that manner.” They don’t have to worry about me dating anyone. I would never betray my mate the way they already have. Yes, I’m a little bitter about this morning's incident.
“And what about you? Are you going to be sleeping around?” I don’t think it would be fair. I’d only agree to this rule if they followed it too. “We’re not that dumb to be caught,” Grayson answers. Hmm, but they are.
“For the record, I don’t date. I’m waiting for my mate.” I glare at them. “I would never agree to this unless it applied to you too.” It would certainly relieve me of a lot of heartache. “Her point is valid. This is a rule that should apply to both parties.” Wyatt agrees with me.
“Fine, we will remain celibate for the year.” Tristin agrees. Sierra snickers in my head happily. She has a way to keep our mates from other women.
“Next is more of a condition, we have to share a room. As you are well aware, being one yourself, Omegas love to spread gossip and rumors.” Grayson says.
I glare at him. “For the record, I may be a female, but I worked outside. I wasn’t in the packhouse much so no I don’t f*****g gossip around and I do have some integrity. I don’t just go around telling people’s secrets. Alpha Tyler would have any omega punished for it too, so no, I don’t know.” I snap.
I can’t believe he’s judging me for my rank. Alpha Tyler isn’t abusive towards omegas, but he’s not always the friendliest to us. His being nice to me yesterday was for appearances. It’s why I thought I was in trouble.
No omega in the New Moon pack would dare get caught spreading rumors. They would be sent to the cells for a week and have their mouth taped shut.
Tristin and Grayson exchange a concerned look and look back at me. “We’ll circle back to that later,” Tristin says with his face etched with concern. Whatever that means…
“Anyway, every morning you will have breakfast with us to discuss the days events.” Grayson continues with the rules and conditions. We go on for an hour or more going over every detail in the contract.
Once it was finally signed, they took me to their office where we performed the transfer ceremony. The ritual is quite simple. Tristin slices his wrist open, causing him to bleed. “What are you waiting for, cupcake?” He asks. He wants me to drink directly from him? That’s normally a more personal act.
I roll my eyes, taking his wrist to my mouth, drinking the sweet metallic taste of his blood, and repeat the same process with Grayson. “I, Emery Grace Farley, reject my link to the New Moon pack, breaking my bonds, and accept the bond to the Shadow Lake Pack as my new pack. I pledge my loyalty to Alphas Grayson, uh…”
“Grayson Ronan Sterling, Tristin Alexander Sterling,” Grayson offers. “I, Emery Grace Farley, pledge my loyalty to Alpha Grayson Ronan Sterling and Alpha Tristin Alexander Sterling.” I pledge my oath.
A second later, a searing pain burns through my head as every mind-link from New Moon filters through my head, breaking the bonds and being replaced with a new one. The pain is so severe it caused my knees to buckle. Grayson catches me before I can hit the ground.
The pain lasted all but five minutes before it was all gone. “I’m ok now,” I say. Grayson's arms are wrapped tightly around me. His touch is electicflying but it only lasts a moment as he releases me as soon as he knows I’m ok.
A girl with red hair and green eyes enters the office. “This is Sage Maddox. She is our Beta Female. She’s going to give you a tour of the pack today. Make sure you are back by seven this evening for dinner. We will be introducing you and announcing our engagement to the pack.” Tristin says.
“Got it,” I said before leaving with Sage. Today is going to be a long day.
