Chapter 3: Her Miracle

1452 Words
POV: Emery I hum as I trim the hedges in the garden. I actually enjoy gardening. It gives me peace. You could say I love my job, but I just wish it paid more. I need the peace right now to relieve the stress in my mind. I've done everything I could think of to get the money, but I'm out of luck. I suppose I should just be grateful my aunt is alive. Now I'm stuck coming up with a plan to take care of my aunt myself. My dad could watch her in the mornings before work. Out of both my parents and their problems, I can count on my dad more than my mother. My father is a very organized alcoholic. He's sober from sunup to the time he gets off work. I usually use this time to talk to him about the issues going on. He suggested taking advance from both his and mom's checks for the month, but it wasn't enough, and Sharron wouldn't allow it. Sharron is the head omega, and she refused to give me an advance of that magnitude. "Emery, stop." My dad calls out. That's when I notice I'm aggressively chopping at the hedge. "Oh, sorry. I'm just stressed." I drop the hedge clippers. "It will all be ok. You'll come up with the money somehow." Dad assures me. By the look on his face, I know what he means. "No, you are not about to gamble that amount of money away. Don't do it." I all but beg him. I don't need that debt. I already owe that amount, I don't need him doubling it. He sighs, looking down in regret. Why do I even bother? "You've already done it, haven't you? How much this time?" I ask. "100,000 dollars. I'm sorry, I wanted to help." He has never bet that much before. He normally keeps it around one to five thousand. "Dad! How could you? What the f**k am I going to do now?" I groan in frustration. I wish he would just stop. "I keep telling you to leave them." Sierra, my wolf says once more. We have had the same argument for years. She thinks I should just leave and let them face the harsh consequences of their actions. If I did that, my mom would be dead from an overdose. My dad would be dead. I can't tell you how many times I have had to revive my mother from overdosing. How many times I've come home to find a bookie beating my dad as a message to get him his money? "Not now, Sierra." I snap at her. "I'll get it back, I promise," Dad says. I've heard this promise too many times to count. "But, will you? Let's be realistic, Dad. You're only going to lose more. I can't afford it right now." I look at him with such disappointment. I could really use a miracle right about now. "Emery!" I hear my name being called, and I freeze at their voice. I know exactly who it is. It's my Alpha, Alpha Tyler. Am I in trouble? Did Sharron report me? I walk slowly towards him, forgetting my dad. Even my dad knows better than to get in the way when it comes to the alpha. No omega would dare to get in the way. As I approach him, I see an unfamiliar man standing next to him. "Alpha Tyler, I apologize for the hedge and involving Sharron in my personal matters." I immediately say. My heart pounds in nervousness. A look of confusion covers his face. "You're not in trouble, Emery. This is Devon." He introduces the man next to him. Relief fills me at the same time curiosity fills me. If I'm not in trouble, then why does he want to talk to me, and who is this Devon? I can tell by his aura his of a higher rank than I am. If I had to guess, I'd say he was an alpha or beta, likely an alpha's brother. I look at Devon, noticing his dark hair and hazel eyes. He looks to be around my age, 18. "Hi." I give him a shy wave. Sierra seems to stir around at the sight and scent of him. He holds a faint scent that is causing my wolf to become restless. The scent isn't his, but he's been around it. "You're Emery Grace Farley?" Devon asks. "I am." I give him a strange look. How does he know my full name? Who is this guy? "May we speak in private for a moment? I promise not to waste too much of your time." He asks. "Uh, sure." I agree out of curiosity. "You can speak in my office. No one will disturb you there. Emery, I would take this opportunity as a gift." Alpha Tyler says before leaving us. Opportunity? I follow Devon into the pack house and into Alpha Tyler's office. I don't think I've ever been in this room before. I sit on the chair closest to the door in fear. Devon sits in the chair next to me. "You're an Omega, that's interesting," Devon says. "Excuse me," Sierra grumbles, I'm my head. She's not too fond of people being defined by rank, which I agree with. We like to focus on a person's character rather than their birth rights. "Yes, and please forgive me for being so blunt, but what does my rank have to do with anything? What do you want from me and who are you?" I ask outright. Aunt Hayley always did say my attitude would get me in trouble one day. Who knows, today might be that day. "Ooh, you've got spunk. That's good, you're going to need it. My name is Devon, I'm from the Shadow Lake Pack. My brothers Grayson and Tristin are the alphas. I'm here on their behalf." Why would they want anything to do with me? I've heard rumors about those alphas. They're twins. The rumors I've heard aren't all good. They're dangerous. "My brothers are cursed, and if their curse is not broken in a year, it will become permanent, and I will lose them. However, the Moon Goddess has provided me with an answer." Devon continues to explain. I've heard of the Goddess answering prayers in times of desperate need. "Ok, but what does that have to do with me?" I ask in curiosity. "I need you to kiss them every day just before midnight for one year and mate them on the last day. In exchange, I will compensate you handsomely. Just name your price and it is yours." I blink several times at him. What? "Y-you want me to k-kiss them and m-mate them?" I've never kissed anyone, much less mated with someone. I was saving that for my mate. "Yes, and I know this is a huge ask, but you are the only thing that could save my brothers." Devon looks at me hopefully. "Why me?" I ask. Anyone could do this, right? Why me? "I don't know. All I know is the Goddess sent me to you. After the year is up, you can have anything you want. You will be greatly rewarded. All you have to do is come live in the Shadow Lake pack for one year and kiss my brothers every day." The first thought that enters my mind is... "This could save Aunt Hayley and pay all of Dad's debts off." Sierra reads my mind. Can I leave them though? Who will take care of my parents in the afternoons and evenings? "Em, they are grown adults, stop treating them as if they are children." Sierra pushes. She wants me to take the offer. This is what Alpha Tyler meant. Could I really do this, though? I was saving all my firsts for my mate, and now it will all go to those alphas. "Yes, we can." Sierra pushes again. I get the feeling her need to go to this pack is more than just wanting to get me away from our parents. "On one condition, my aunt's medical bills are paid for every month until she has fully recovered and my family is taken care of while I am gone." I agree to do this. There is no other way to get the money. "Deal." We shake hands on it. "Ok, so when does this start?" I ask. "Today, you leave with me. I will give you two hours to wrap things up here and pack." Devon says. Today?! "U-um ok." I leave the office in a daze. I guess this is really happening. My prayer for a miracle came true.
