Nicholas did not leave for Nicosia until the fall. Already on his first day at the palace, he found himself thrown in at the deep end. Philip’s old secretary had little time and patience for the young man’s inexperience, and Nicholas burned the midnight oil, learning the protocol, the procedures, and the names of those nobles who customarily moved through the palace.
Since the archbishopric was only a short walk from the palace, Nicholas had been hoping to spend some time with Peyre, but he had just moved to Famagusta to work together with the famous architect Jean Landois on the design and construction of the Saint Nicholas Cathedral.
At the end of January, Nicholas was on his own with his duties, as the old secretary retired to his home estate, earlier than planned
