Chapter 53 - 1306
Nicholas said his goodbyes to the Buenaventuras at the gate, wishing he had more time to think before he spoke to Lois. His legs felt like iron as he slogged back into the house.
To his surprise, Lois was not there waiting for him. She was not in the pantry either. He went upstairs and found her in his bedchamber throwing her few belongings into a satchel.
Lois had heard the sound of his footsteps on the battered wooden staircase but did not stop to meet his eye when he came into the room.
“What are you doing?” he asked quietly.
“You know what I’m doing,” she said, tying the final knot.
He sensed her anger and did his best to ignore it. “Why?”
“Why are you asking me questions you already know the answers to? You are going to marry this girl!”
